Expert Review: Solo Sokos Hotel Torni
Solo Sokos Hotel Torni, a Michelin Key Selected property in Helsinki, offers a distinctive blend of historic elegance, modern comfort, and prime city-centre convenience. Having undergone a comprehensive renovation, the hotel, originally built in 1931 as Finland's first skyscraper, has successfully recaptured its 1930s glory while integrating contemporary amenities.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The Solo Sokos Hotel Torni generally receives excellent to wonderful feedback from guests, with high scores across various platforms. It achieves an impressive 9.7 for location, 9.5 for staff, 9.3 for comfort, and 9.2 for cleanliness. While its value for money is rated slightly lower at 8.6, the overall sentiment points to a highly satisfying and luxurious experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several standout features of the hotel:

- Rooftop Bar (Ateljee Bar): This iconic bar offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, making it a popular spot for drinks and even a luxurious breakfast experience.
- Breakfast: The hotel's breakfast buffet is frequently described as amazing, delicious, extensive, and high-quality, featuring locally sourced ingredients and house-made items like sourdough bread. Coffee and tea are served directly to tables, enhancing the experience.
- Service & Staff: The staff are consistently commended for being friendly, helpful, and providing personalized and attentive care.
- Design & History: The hotel's unique character, charm, and elegant Art Nouveau and Art Déco design, rooted in its 1920s construction, are highly appreciated by visitors.

3. Room Quality
The Solo Sokos Hotel Torni features 147 modern and soundproofed guest rooms, decorated in either Art Nouveau or Art Déco styles. Rooms are equipped with an LCD TV with cable channels, a mini-fridge-bar, air conditioning, and a private bathroom with a shower or bathtub. Guests often highlight the comfortable beds and the option of choosing from a selection of pillows. While some rooms are described as spacious, particularly upgraded ones, standard rooms can be perceived as tiny. Certain rooms offer a seating area or a narrow balcony with views of the bustling street life, and "Solo Up" rooms on higher floors boast city views and distinct glass-walled bathrooms.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers a diverse culinary scene with four distinct venues:
- OR Restaurant & Bar: A casual brasserie known for its French-inspired menu enhanced with seasonal Finnish ingredients.
- Ateljee Bar: Located on the top floor, this is Helsinki's first rooftop bar, providing spectacular views and also offering a luxurious breakfast for private events.
- American Bar: A cocktail bar noted for its magical atmosphere and handcrafted drinks.
- Pub O'Malley's: Finland's first Irish pub, offering a relaxed atmosphere and live music during the summer.
The complimentary buffet breakfast, served at the OR Restaurant, is a particular highlight, praised for its extensive selection of fresh, local, and house-made items, including Torni sourdough bread, porridge, smoothies, and various warm dishes. An in-room breakfast option is also available for an additional fee.

6. Location & Accessibility
The Solo Sokos Hotel Torni boasts an unbeatable central location in the heart of Helsinki's Kamppi district, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. It is only a 5-minute walk from Helsinki Central Station and the Esplanadi shopping streets, with many major attractions like Stockmann Department Store, Helsinki Cathedral, and various museums within easy walking distance. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) is approximately 20-25 km away, reachable by taxi in about 30 minutes or by train in around 35 minutes.
7. Value & Pricing
While Solo Sokos Hotel Torni is a luxury 5-star property, guests generally rate its value for money well (8.6/10). Room prices can vary, with rates starting from approximately $119 to $199 for standard rooms, and an average price around $229, which is considered competitive for the quality offered in Helsinki. Some guests, however, have expressed that the overall experience, particularly regarding certain service details, aligns more with a "4-star plus" rather than a full 5-star hotel.

Despite the high praise, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:
- Room Size & Storage: Standard rooms can be small, and some guests found storage space to be limited.
- Bathroom Issues: Occasional complaints include tiny bathrooms, poor drainage leading to water pooling, and reports of a slight sewage smell in the evenings or early mornings in some bathrooms.
- Service Lapses: A few guests have noted a lack of luggage assistance upon arrival and departure, which is sometimes seen as unusual for a 5-star hotel.
- Dining Experience at Peak Times: During busy breakfast hours, some guests have experienced the dining room feeling chaotic, with missed coffee orders or disappointing quality of egg dishes. There have also been instances of menu items being unavailable for dinner without prior notification.
- Noise: Due to its central location, some rooms, particularly during warm summer nights, may experience noise from nearby construction or nightlife.

Update: Thanks Tuomas for the nice reply. 3.5 stars really. Although the rooms are really nice and the staff pleasant, if you stay on a room on the Yrjönkatu street side during the weekend, then be prepared to suffer no sleep. This is due to the “pumping” nightclubs nearby that play deafening music to assorted teen and post-teen revelers until 4am. During the daytime at the time of writing there i...

Good hotel, depending on where your rooms are, you might need to get your luggage up some stairs. The adjunct Murphy’s cafe has some activities you might enjoy. Life music. As there is a strict time when the music stops, hardly any issue about disturbances.

We visited for the Rooftop Cocktail Bar. It's great- nice views of the city, but very busy (and not well organised). The beers and wines were very expensive, making cocktails the best value in my opinion, but does mean the small var can be slow. If i was staying at the hotel I would probably wish that they had a more organised seating system. The barman forgot our drinks, but when he realised he g...
