Expert Review: Sol y Luna

Sol y Luna, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property nestled in Peru's Sacred Valley, consistently receives accolades for its luxurious accommodations, exceptional service, and profound commitment to local culture and community. It stands out not only as a top-tier hotel but also as a significant social enterprise, with profits directly funding the Sol y Luna Foundation's educational and community projects.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Sol y Luna is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "sumptuous" and "surprisingly wonderful" property. It is often cited as one of the best luxury hotels in the Sacred Valley and even among the top hotels in Peru. Guests are particularly moved by the hotel's philanthropic mission, which adds a meaningful dimension to their stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Sol y Luna for several key aspects:

  • Philanthropic Mission: The Sol y Luna Foundation, which supports an intercultural school, a graduate program, an orphanage, and a center for children with disabilities, is a unique and deeply appreciated highlight. Guests are encouraged to visit the school and interact with the children.
  • Stunning Setting & Design: The hotel's 25-hectare (24-acre) grounds are a "garden paradise" filled with indigenous flora, including vibrant flowers, cacti, and 35 species of birds, creating a tranquil oasis. The architecture pays homage to ancient Inca constructions with low-lying bungalows built from local stone, clay walls, and native beams.
  • Authentic Andean Integration: The property beautifully integrates Andean culture through its design, featuring local stone, hand-painted murals, Peruvian textiles, and contemporary folk art by local artists.
  • Amenities & Activities: The hotel offers two swimming pools (one unheated), a spa (Yacu Wasi), a gym, sauna, outdoor jacuzzi, and its own horse stables with Peruvian Paso horses. A wide array of activities, including horseback riding, quad biking, mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, paragliding, cooking classes, and visits to local markets and archaeological sites, can be arranged.

3. Room Quality

Sol y Luna comprises 43 individual "casitas" (bungalow-style villas) across three categories: Superior, Deluxe, and Premium. These casitas are praised for their cozy yet luxurious feel, often described as intimate and authentic. Each is individually decorated with vibrant hand-painted murals by artists like Federico Bauer, colonial-style furniture, terracotta floor tiles, and Peruvian textiles.

Common amenities across casitas include flat-screen TVs, safety deposit boxes, high-speed Wi-Fi, marble-tiled bathrooms stocked with L'Occitane products, high-density Peruvian pima cotton sheets, and goose feather duvets. Deluxe and Premium casitas offer enhanced luxury, featuring heated floors, walk-in closets, and wood-burning fireplaces. Premium casitas further boast private terraces with outdoor jacuzzis and breathtaking mountain views.

4. Dining Experience

Sol y Luna offers two excellent restaurants focusing on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, many grown by local farmers.

  • Killa Wasi: This elegant and intimate restaurant specializes in gourmet Peruvian cuisine, offering contemporary interpretations of rustic Andean culinary traditions. Breakfast, a lavish buffet featuring ancient grains and unusual fruits, is served here with options for indoor and outdoor seating by a pool.
  • Wayra: A larger, more casual restaurant, Wayra's menu is built around Andean ingredients and prepared in traditional wood-burning ovens. It hosts regular Peruvian Paso horse shows, theatrical folk shows, and textile demonstrations.
  • Special Dining: For special occasions, The Cava (wine cellar) offers an exclusive dining venue with bespoke menus and wine pairings. Guests can also experience a Chef's Table, a three-course culinary adventure exploring Peruvian flavors.
  • Cuisine & Drinks: The culinary team has trained with innovators of contemporary Peruvian cuisine, ensuring high quality. Guests enjoy flavorful cocktails, especially Pisco Sours. Vegetarian and vegan options are readily available.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Sol y Luna is consistently lauded as exceptional. Guests frequently highlight the friendly, local staff and their "attention to detail." The hotel fosters a warm atmosphere where guests feel like "part of the extended family," with staff motivated by the Andean concept of "Ayni," meaning reciprocity.

6. Location & Accessibility

Sol y Luna is ideally situated in the heart of the Sacred Valley, just outside the village of Urubamba. At an altitude of 2,800 meters (8,850 feet), it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Andes Mountains and lush agrarian terraces. Its location makes it a perfect stopover between Cusco and Machu Picchu, and an excellent base for exploring nearby Inca archaeological sites such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Moray, Maras, and Chinchero. The hotel can arrange various transportation options and excursions.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury property and a Relais & Châteaux member, Sol y Luna commands premium pricing. Superior Rooms start from approximately US $483 per night, while Deluxe King Rooms can start from US$822 per night. While expensive, guests often find it to be an "incredible value for the price" given the complete luxury, unique experiences, and the knowledge that their stay contributes to the Sol y Luna Foundation's impactful work.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted:

  • Spa Experience: One past guest reported a disappointing spa experience, citing an undertrained massage therapist. However, they quickly added that "everything else at the hotel was excellent."
  • Reservation Issues: Another review mentioned experiencing "nickel-and-dime" vibes from the hotel reservation staff for an expensive package, leading them to consider alternative luxury options in the region.

Spent two glorious nights at this hotel with my family. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The staff was terrifically accommodating and the restaurant provided a couple of lovely meals. Used it as a jumping off point for archeological visits.

We received exceptional service at Sol y Luna and felt that everything about it was beyond first class. We had very wonderful interactions with everyone on the staff. The setting is incredible, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, it is quiet and well-situated for many Sacred Valley activities. Everyone was so attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was delicious and the s...

Disappointing hotel despite the beautiful setting. The rooms are stylish but sparse e.g. no kettle and no glasses provided for the water. You cannot sit comfortably up in bed as there's no headboard just a shelf behind the pillows. The prices are ridiculously high for everything. A single glass of wine is almost 20 usd. The gym is very small and the sauna temp is very low (47 C!). The breakfast i...

Good property but beware - food poisoning appears common here. Unfortunately, we found out the tough way and it ruined our trip including plans for macchu picchu. It’s the first relais chateaux property we have had this experience and would be careful with their recommendations going forward. Worst of all, service next day didn’t seem to care. They seem to think refunds of the dinner is all they ...

We have just had two night stay at Sol y Luna. It was going to be the highlight of our trip. However, on the first night, my husband and I ordered the same thing at dinner, and nine hours later we both had horrible food poisoning. We let the manager know so he could stop feeding that food to other guests but he kept insisting that it must be altitude sickness. We have been in Peru for two weeks no...

This hotel was our „base camp“ during a three day Sacred Valley visit. We have stayed at other luxury places here before, but we liked this hotel the most. Mainly due to the pool area and the attentive service and perfect ambience. It’s just nice to return - after an exhausting hiking day - to a place where you can relax. I would recommend to upgrade to the higher room category, it’s significantly...
