Expert Review: Soho House Barcelona
Soho House Barcelona stands as a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property, known for its unique blend of eclectic luxury, vibrant atmosphere, and prime location in the city's historic Gothic Quarter. Occupying an 18th-century building with a distinctive dusky pink facade, the hotel seamlessly marries its signature bohemian style with Catalan architectural elements and local design influences.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Soho House Barcelona is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an aspirational, sophisticated, cool, yet approachable destination. Guests appreciate its unique vibe and comprehensive amenities, offering a "special place" for both relaxation and engagement. The Michelin Key One-Key distinction further solidifies its reputation as an outstanding hotel.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Soho House Barcelona for several standout features:
- Design & Ambiance: The interiors showcase an impressive collection of contemporary art, a mix of midcentury European pieces, local antiques, and custom-made designs, all contributing to a relaxed, eclectic luxury. Vaulted ceilings and a blend of bold, colorful tiles and heavy Spanish prints create a visually rich environment.
- Rooftop Terrace: A major draw is the stunning rooftop terrace, featuring a heated pool, bar, and rows of canopied daybeds, offering almost 360-degree views over Marina Port Vell, ancient churches, and the Collserola mountains. It's celebrated as a gorgeous Mediterranean oasis and a vibrant spot for socializing.
- Comprehensive Amenities: Beyond the rooftop, the property boasts an indoor swimming pool, a luxurious Cowshed spa (with treatments and signature products), a capacious gym equipped with Technogym machines and studios for yoga and spinning, and a private cinema. Thoughtful touches like complimentary cookies and hot water bottles in rooms also enhance the guest experience.
- Location: Its strategic position at the perimeter of the Gothic Quarter, overlooking Port Vell marina, is ideal for exploring Barcelona's attractions on foot or by scooter.
3. Room Quality
Soho House Barcelona offers 57 rooms, ranging from "Tiny" to "Large," designed to compensate for their size with abundant style and thoughtful luxuries. Rooms are infused with Catalan motifs, Mediterranean, and Spanish color schemes, featuring a blend of vintage accessories, bespoke, and mid-century furnishings.
Key room features include:
- Super king-size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets and soft, deep pillows.
- Modern amenities such as Smart TVs, Marshall Bluetooth speakers or radios, Grind coffee setups, tea, and well-stocked minibars with fresh lemons and limes.
- En-suite bathrooms are stylishly designed with custom-made tiles and antique brass fixtures. Many feature large baths and generous rain showers, along with an extensive collection of full-sized Cowshed bath products. Some even boast a shower that doubles as a steam sauna.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers a diverse and high-quality dining experience across its various venues:
- Cecconi's: The brand's signature Italian restaurant on the ground floor is open to the public and renowned for its glamorous and contemporary ambiance, making it a popular spot "to see and be seen". It serves a menu inspired by the Mediterranean with an Italian nod, offering aperitifs, small plates, and a la carte options like risotto, lobster spaghetti, veal, and chicken paillard.
- The House Kitchen: Located on the fifth-floor clubhouse (members-only), this informal dining and lounge area provides a laid-back atmosphere for Mediterranean bites, including soups, salads, and tapas. It's also where breakfast is served, offering made-to-order eggs, toasts, breakfast bowls, juices, pancakes, and omelets. The coffee is particularly highly regarded.
- Rooftop Restaurant and Bar: Exclusively for members (and hotel guests during their stay), this spot overlooks Marina Port Vell and serves ice-cold drinks and small tapas. Guests can also enjoy food and drinks from the Club menu anywhere within the house.
5. Service & Staff
Service at Soho House Barcelona is frequently praised, with staff described as incredibly friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive. They are noted for being "younger" and "living and enjoying their city," which translates into great recommendations. Staff are readily available to assist guests upon arrival. However, some employee reviews suggest that staff can be overworked, potentially leading to high turnover.
6. Location & Accessibility
Soho House Barcelona boasts an excellent and highly accessible location on Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli, situated between the city's iconic Gothic Quarter and the Barceloneta beach, directly overlooking Port Vell marina.
- Neighborhood: It's ideal for exploring the labyrinthine streets of the Gothic Quarter, enjoying the waterfront, and accessing a multitude of attractions.
- Nearby Attractions: Within easy walking distance are La Rambla (2 minutes), the Gothic Quarter (steps away), Wax Museum, Museum of History of Barcelona, Liceu, Catedral de Barcelona, and Plaza Catalunya. Iconic sites like Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia are also easily reachable.
- Transport: The Drassanes metro station is conveniently located within 500 meters, and several public bus routes stop outside the property.
- Accessibility: The hotel provides accessible rooms with en-suite shower rooms, emergency pull cords, drop-down seats, and grab rails. The spa, both indoor and rooftop pools, gym, and cinema are all wheelchair accessible, with lifts available for pool access. While there isn't a dedicated car park, the main entrance is suitable for taxi drop-off and pick-up. Service animals are permitted.
7. Value & Pricing
As a luxury property and a Michelin Key One-Key hotel, Soho House Barcelona's pricing reflects its exclusive amenities and design. Room rates typically start from approximately €260.
For non-members, a 12-month "Soho Friends" membership is often added to bookings for an additional €140. This membership grants hotel guests access to the members-only areas during their stay and provides several benefits, including:
- 15% off bedrooms at all Soho House properties.
- 12 pm late checkout.
- Bedroom upgrades on stays of three nights or more (subject to availability).
- Discounts at Cowshed spa and Soho Skin products (25%) and at public restaurants during specific hours (20% from 4 pm Sunday, all day Monday-Wednesday). Breakfast is not included in the standard room rates but can be purchased a la carte from the House Kitchen menu.
8. Common Complaints
While highly rated, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted:
- Room Size: Due to the historical building's floor plan, some rooms, particularly those categorized as "Tiny" or "Small," can indeed be quite compact, although they are well-designed to maximize space and comfort.
- Exclusivity & Atmosphere: Some guests and former members have expressed a perception that the club can be "full of wankers" or "rich posers," leading to a less authentic or more crowded atmosphere, especially in public areas. The environment is sometimes seen as better suited for networking rather than quiet work.
- Workspace Limitations: Laptop use can be restricted in certain desirable areas, such as the rooftop, and dedicated co-working spaces or ergonomic work setups may not be as extensive as some might expect.
- Service Strain: Despite generally positive feedback on staff, some reports indicate that employees can be overworked, potentially contributing to a high turnover rate.
- Amenity Functionality: While the gym is well-equipped with Technogym machines, some guests have experienced occasional issues with the advanced features of the equipment.
- Membership Concerns: Former members have voiced concerns about a perceived decrease in exclusivity, particularly regarding discounts for younger members and stringent pool booking policies that can lead to cancellations. There have also been complaints about issues with Soho Friends membership vouchers and a lack of customer service response.
- Maintenance: Minor issues like falling door signs have been noted, suggesting some aspects of the interior design might feel less robust upon closer inspection.

We stayed here for a week and it was a world class experience! Irene and Manu were so kind and friendly ! They had the best recommendations as well. The house itself is beautiful, especially the underground spa and pool. We loved the steam rooms and saunas too! They have a bartender with a full bar cart stop by each room around 7pm as well to offer cocktails in the convenience of your own room. Wh...

Very average Soho House... Maybe as it was a cold windy day so the rooftop area couldn't be used to its full advantage but.. the rooftop space and pool is quite small so I imagine would be packed in the summer. I went to Soho House to spend some time to relax after a busy weekend before my flight but the indoor pool was unavailable as it was already "full" - those booked onto spa treatments are g...

One of the very best clubs in the Soho House group. Plenty of space to work and socialise indoors and outdoors. The gym is excellent and the club runs an brilliant social & cultural programme. Food and drinks terrific at all times of the day. I visited frequently during a recent 5 week stay in Barcelona and loved it. Thanks to all the team.

We didn’t stay at Soho House, but we visited the spa, and overall the experience was quite nice. The sauna was good, although the swimming pool was a bit cold. The massage was very good - I went with two friends, and they were also satisfied. The oil was pleasant, the space was warm, and the atmosphere in general was relaxing. The only downside was the changing room and shower area, which is shar...

Be aware that the workers of the restaurant on 5th floor definitely lack education. DON’T GIVE YOUR BELONGINGS TO THE STAFF! 1 photo was made in the elevator of Soho House before we came to the restaurant on 14 February . Then we asked the waitress if she could bring the vase, instead she offered to put it in the kitchen. 2 and 3 photo, is what happened to the bouquet when she brought it back. Som...

Had the honour of meeting a friend at the SoHo House in Barcelona and despite "only" having some tapas and beers, the experience was really impressive. The tapas were amazing, excellent selection from the staff and the service was excellent. What a great place to welcome someone as a member.
