Expert Review: Six Senses Yao Noi

Six Senses Yao Noi, a distinguished Two-Key property in the Michelin Guide, consistently receives high praise as a luxury retreat offering an immersive "Robinson Crusoe" experience with exceptional service and breathtaking natural beauty.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Six Senses Yao Noi is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a paradise oasis and an unforgettable destination. Many consider it among the best luxury hotels in Thailand and the Phuket area, setting a high benchmark for island resort living in Asia. It's lauded for its ability to help guests relax and reconnect with nature.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Six Senses Yao Noi:

  • Location & Views: The resort's setting amidst the awe-inspiring limestone pinnacles of Phang Nga Bay provides "jaw-dropping" and "speechless" views, particularly from the Hilltop Reserve and various villas. The scenery is often described as something out of a movie set, breathtaking, and otherworldly.
  • Service & Staff: The staff is frequently highlighted as super-friendly, impeccable, and very accommodating. The personalized "Guest Experience Maker" (GEM) service, available 24/7 via WhatsApp, is a significant plus, assisting with excursions, reservations, and transfers.
  • Design & Ambiance: The resort embraces a "luxury Robinson Crusoe" vibe with a strong emphasis on sustainable luxury, utilizing natural materials like bamboo and reclaimed wood in its contemporary Thai architecture. The design is described as tasteful and blends seamlessly with the rural, jungle-like landscaping. The immersive experience aims to minimize distractions from nature.
  • Privacy & Space: All 56 villas are incredibly spacious, offering generous personal space and utmost privacy, often feeling like guests are alone in the jungle.
  • Amenities & Experiences: The Six Senses Spa, nestled in the lush tropical hillside, is a major highlight, offering a huge menu of treatments and an Edenic setting. Other popular amenities include the Hilltop infinity pool with stunning views, free bicycles for exploring the island, kayaking, yoga classes, and a 24-hour fitness center. The organic farm where guests can harvest their own eggs is also a unique offering.

3. Room Quality

The villas at Six Senses Yao Noi are designed to provide comfort, space, and a connection with nature.

  • Spaciousness & Layout: All villas are described as huge, with even the entry-level Hideaway Pool Villas offering almost 1700 sq ft. They are typically multi-room with separate living areas, bedrooms, and spacious bathrooms.
  • Features: Standard villa features include private infinity pools, outdoor showers, indoor showers, soaking tubs, and outdoor dining areas with sun loungers. Beds are noted as super comfortable, often featuring Naturalmat organic Emperor mattresses and a pillow menu for enhanced comfort. Some villas also include rooftop terraces or private cinema and workout areas in premium categories.
  • Design & Privacy: The decor is tasteful, utilizing natural materials, and the villas are strategically positioned to ensure privacy, making guests feel secluded in the jungle. Thoughtful details like hidden TVs and sliding windows to "commune with nature" are appreciated.
  • Views: While entry-level Hideaway Pool Villas may not have ocean views, upgrading to Ocean Pool Villas, Ocean Panorama Pool Villas, or Beachfront Pool Villas offers partial, 180-degree, or direct ocean views, which many guests highly recommend as being "worth it".

4. Dining Experience

Six Senses Yao Noi offers a variety of dining options across its three main restaurants: The Living Room, The Dining Room (Nithan), and The Hilltop.

  • Variety & Quality: There are generally three restaurants on the property, offering Western and Thai cuisine. The food, especially Thai dishes, is often described as delicious, with highlights like green curry and Khao Pad. In-villa dining is also available and well-regarded for efficiency.
  • Breakfast: Reviews for breakfast are mixed. Some guests found the breakfast buffet to be extensive and excellent, featuring live cooking stations, fresh fruit, a deli, and homemade baked goods. Vegan options are also well-catered for, with a wide array of plant-based choices and unlimited complimentary sorbets. However, other guests were "very unimpressed" with the breakfast, finding it hard to find appealing options and noting it wasn't as amazing as other luxury hotels.
  • Specialty Dining: Nithan, the fancier Thai restaurant, is open for dinner with two seatings. The Hilltop is highly exclusive, offering fine dining with "epic" and "spectacular" views over Phang Nga Bay, often converting its pool area into a dining venue in the evening. Special dining events can also occur, though these sometimes limit other restaurant options.
  • Sustainability: Aligning with the Six Senses ethos, the resort emphasizes organic food, with some produce sourced from its own organic farm.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Six Senses Yao Noi is consistently lauded as a major strength.

  • Personalized GEM Service: Guests are assigned a "Guest Experience Maker" (GEM) who is available 24/7 via WhatsApp to assist with anything from arranging excursions and taxis to making dinner reservations. This personalized approach is highly appreciated.
  • Hospitality: Staff members, from management to individual hosts, are described as super friendly, welcoming, kind, and impeccable. Many guests felt they got to know the staff during their stay.
  • Efficiency: Room service for lunch was noted to be prompt, arriving ahead of the estimated time. Check-in is also done in the room, enhancing the personalized experience.
  • Accommodation of Needs: The resort's service excellence suggests they would attempt to accommodate guests with limited mobility, despite the presence of steps around the resort.

6. Location & Accessibility

Six Senses Yao Noi is located on Koh Yao Noi island in Phang Nga Bay, offering a serene and secluded escape.

  • Secluded Island Location: The resort is situated on a quiet island, halfway between Phuket and Krabi, making it a perfect spot for island hopping. It's a refuge from the crowds of Phuket.
  • Transfer: Getting to the resort typically involves a car ride to a marina (e.g., Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket) followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride to the island. The hotel provides transfers for a fee.
  • On-Island Exploration: The island is accessible, and the resort offers free bikes for guests to explore. The area around the hotel is mostly flat, with local restaurants and massage places within a 10-minute bike ride. However, cycling after dark is not recommended due to a lack of street lamps and mosquitoes.
  • Attractions & Excursions: The resort can arrange private excursions to nearby attractions like the Phi Phi islands and kayaking tours of Tha Lane in Krabi's mangroves. The calm waters are ideal for boat trips, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
  • Natural Environment: The resort itself is nestled into the hills, surrounded by lush tropical landscapes and natural beauty, including mangroves and fishing villages. Guests frequently spot wildlife such as birds, lizards, and butterflies.

7. Value & Pricing

Six Senses Yao Noi is a luxury property, and its pricing reflects that.

  • Cost: The entry-level Hideaway Pool Villa can cost around $1,300 per night, including breakfast. Direct bookings through IHG for a two-night stay can be around $1,275 or 202,000 IHG points.
  • Worth the Cost: Many guests feel it is "definitely worth a visit" for the unique views and experience, especially if planning a trip in the Phuket area. The distinction of being a Michelin Two-Key property also signifies its exceptional value for the price.
  • Value-Adds: Booking through programs like American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts can provide additional benefits such as room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, guaranteed late check-out, and hotel credits. Ambassador membership can also offer valuable perks like a complimentary massage.
  • Expensive Extras: While services are exceptional, some guests note that "all extras were expensive". This is particularly true for excursions, where guests are reliant on the resort due to its remote location.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Buggy Service: The resort's hilly, labyrinthine layout necessitates buggy transportation everywhere, which can sometimes lead to 5+ minute waits and be considered "a bit annoying".
  • Beach Quality: The beach is generally not considered a "show stopper" compared to the impressive pool views. It can be small, rocky in places, and the water may not be ideal for swimming. While there are two private beaches, they may not be the "idyllic, sugar white sand" many associate with Thailand.
  • Main Pool Size: The main pool at the Hilltop is described as "quite small" for a property with 50+ villas, though it rarely feels crowded, possibly because most guests utilize their private villa pools. The main pool also closes a couple of hours before sunset, which some found disappointing.
  • Mosquitoes/Bugs: Given the jungle setting, guests occasionally mention encountering "LOTS OF BUGS" and mosquitoes, especially outside the villas in the evenings.
  • Food Consistency (Breakfast): As mentioned in the dining section, some guests found the breakfast options to be underwhelming or repetitive towards the end of their stay.
  • Rustic Elements: While part of its charm, some guests noted "clunky front doors" or "slightly crooked cabinets" in villas that wouldn't close properly, hinting at a more rustic rather than perfectly polished luxury experience.
  • Accessibility: Guests with limited mobility may find the resort challenging due to numerous steps, some of which are steep or uneven, and some difficult-to-open doors in villas.
  • Lack of Sunset Views: The resort is oriented to the east, meaning there are no direct sunset views from the property, requiring guests to go off-property to experience them.

Note: we stayed here Nov 2024 and I'm only getting around to writing a review. I'm torn between giving the resort a 3 or 4. On the one hand, the staff and everyone we met (including our guide on the boat excursion we booked) was fantastic. We truly appreciate the kindness and attention. The views from the main pool and other locations on the property were special and one of a kind ! The food was a...

Magical stay at the Six Senses. Villa 24 was exceptional with glorious views across the bay (although I did sometimes want to punch the toucan who liked to scream outside my window at 7am 🤣). Service as ever was exceptional. Jeans (my GEM) organised everything seamlessly and all the service staff brought their top game. The guys in the living room and at the Hilltop were excellent and the food wa...

Incredible hotel, amazing service and breathtaking views. Was one of the best hotel experiences I have had. We had the best time. We made the most of the complimentary bike hire to explore the island, also the mangrove kayak tour and drinks with management. We ate at 2/3 of the restaurants and the meals were good but not the best value for money. Breakfast was excellent.

Fantastic stay at the 6S in Ko Yao Noi! The villas offer a sanctuary of peace in the jungle, with beautiful views of the dramatic limestone islands in the sea, that can be enjoyed from your private pool - very romantic. The food offering is excellent, both western and thai, with a health conscious curation of the menu and authentic thai flavours. My highlight was the spicy pad kra pow for breakfas...
