Savoy Palace, Madeira: A Comprehensive Review of Funchal's Michelin One-Key Luxury Hub

The Savoy Palace in Funchal, Madeira, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property, stands as a grand beacon of modern luxury, blending Belle Époque glamour with contemporary design. Guests consistently praise its opulent facilities, exceptional service, and prime location, making it a highly-rated choice for an indulgent Madeiran escape.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Savoy Palace is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as "exceptional" and a "superb experience". It boasts high ratings across various platforms, with guests frequently expressing a desire to return, stating they "wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Madeira". While its large size (352 rooms over 16 floors) might typically deter those seeking boutique experiences, the hotel manages to maintain an intimate feel through its thoughtful design and personalized service.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with several standout features:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's architecture is striking, with a curved, wave-like exterior and interiors designed by Madeira native Nini Andrade Silva, incorporating floral and botanical themes as a nod to the island's natural landscape. The swish marble lobby, romantic staircases, and a three-story suspended light installation create a "wow factor".
  • The Laurea Spa: Recognized as the largest spa in Portugal, it offers a state-of-the-art wellness experience inspired by Madeira's Laurissilva Forest, featuring hydrotherapy rooms, Turkish baths, 11 treatment rooms, and an indoor-outdoor pool complex with waterfalls.
  • Pool Areas: The hotel boasts multiple impressive pools, including a massive main outdoor pool, an adults-only rooftop infinity pool (with exclusive access for suite guests), and a dedicated kids' pool. The rooftop infinity pool is particularly lauded for its "spectacular views over the Atlantic".
  • Luxurious Rooms: The spacious and comfortable rooms, often with magnificent ocean or city views, are a consistent highlight.
  • Exceptional Breakfast: The breakfast buffet receives frequent accolades for its "absolutely amazing" variety, "huge choice," and live cooking stations.

3. Room Quality

The rooms and suites at Savoy Palace are described as spacious, comfortable, and luxurious, with a modern design. They feature high-end, modern furniture, comfortable beds (with mattress toppers available upon request), and spa-like bathrooms. An ivory, gold, and champagne color palette, walnut wood furnishings, and bespoke details contribute to their sophisticated feel. All but the most standard rooms include private balconies, many offering stunning sea views, and some suites even feature private plunge pools and large wraparound terraces. In-room amenities typically include a mini-bar, safe, fast internet, USB charging ports, and international power sockets.

4. Dining Experience

Savoy Palace offers an impressive array of nearly a dozen stylish restaurants, lounges, and bars.

  • Breakfast: The buffet breakfast, served in restaurants like Hibiscus or Orchidaceae Atelier, is a major highlight, praised for its extensive selection, including traditional Portuguese items and live cooking stations. Suite guests also have the option of an à la carte breakfast at the exclusive rooftop Jacarandá Club, which features an infinity pool and panoramic views.
  • Dinner & Other Meals:
    • Galáxia Skyfood: Located on the 16th floor, this upscale rooftop restaurant offers fine dining with spectacular city views and is known for its sophisticated tasting menus and drink pairings.
    • Alameda Restaurant: Offers Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, including grills, pizzas, and local specialties like black scabbard fish.
    • Pau de Lume: Serves classic Portuguese snacks.
    • Other poolside restaurants are available for lunch.
  • Bars: Options include the rooftop Galáxia Sky Bar for cocktails with Funchal lights below, and Vimes Entertainment Bar in the gardens for live sports and music. Afternoon tea is also a noted tradition at the hotel.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service is generally very positive, with staff frequently described as "very kind, attentive and helpful", "charming and helpful", and "effortlessly warm and welcoming". Many reviewers highlight the personalized service despite the hotel's large size. However, some isolated criticisms mention "mediocre at best" service, communication problems between departments leading to incorrect or unexecuted requests, and slow service in bars.

6. Location & Accessibility

Savoy Palace is centrally located in Funchal, Madeira's capital, within walking distance of the city center, the harbor, and the old town. It offers panoramic city skyline views and is approximately 150m from the seafront, with direct access to a pebbled beach. Buzzing bars and restaurants are also just 100m away. The hotel is about 20 kilometers (9.2 miles) from Funchal Madeira International Airport (FNC), with transfer times around 50 minutes. Excellent underground parking is available.

7. Value & Pricing

While the Savoy Palace is considered an expensive, luxury stay, many guests feel it is worth the cost for the experience it offers. A stay in a standard double room for 10 nights can range from approximately €2,500 to €3,500. The hotel is generally perceived as a five-star property, equivalent to luxury, and part of The Leading Hotels of the World. The Michelin Key One-Key recognition further underscores its status as a very special stay.

8. Common Complaints

While overall satisfaction is high, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Spa Access Fees: The spa, despite being a major highlight, often incurs an extra charge (e.g., €40-€45 per day) for access to its warm pools, which some guests find too expensive, especially when outdoor pools are cold in winter.
  • Outdoor Pool Temperature: Outdoor swimming pools can be too cold during winter months.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Although generally praised, some guests have experienced slow service in bars and communication issues among staff leading to errors in requests.
  • Restaurant Bookings: During peak times, booking spa treatments and restaurants can be difficult due to high demand.
  • Lack of Direct Beach Access: While close to the seafront, there is no direct beach access, with the nearest city beaches being 1-2 kilometers away.
  • Hotel Size: A few guests have found the hotel's large size (352 rooms) to feel somewhat "soulless" or "pretentious," preferring smaller boutique hotels.
  • Minor Room Details: Occasional mentions of a lack of dressing tables or sufficient hooks in rooms have surfaced.

We spent our holiday at this hotel in October. A truly wonderful hotel! The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The view was especially wonderful. We really liked the hotel complex. A lovely hotel, understood to be the best in Funchal. Staff all friendly and super-efficient. Breakfast was first class. Sea view room on the 5th floor was very clean and comfortable. Cannot comment on the other facilities as we chose to explore the surrounding area during the day and to eat out (many restaurants locally) in the evening. However, the pool area looked great, and the bars/restaurant...

Pay no attention to the negative reviews. This hotel deserves all 5 stars. Beautiful spacious rooms, friendly staff that goes above and beyond, housekeeping was spectacular and left extra waters without asking, the breakfast and all food was delicious, the spa is an absolute dream (you must book a service while here or you’re doing yourself a disservice), the pool is clean and large with plenty of...

Fantastic hotel with beautiful ocean rooms and great cocktails with easy walk and access to sea and the local town. Service mixed with the spa being a disappointment as not 5 star luxury but more noisy and not all facilities working. Shouldn’t have to make hotel guests pay for this. Rooftop stunning and overall a lovely stay!

Review: NYE Gala at Savoy Palace Grand Ballroom (must read) This event was extremely disappointing and absolutely not worth the price. Tickets were around $600 per person—more expensive than any party I’ve attended—and the value was far below expectations. From the start, the experience felt restrictive. Guests were welcomed at 6:30 PM with champagne or white wine, but here’s the catch: those we...

Excellent and very clean hotel, which i can fully recommend for a luxury stay in Madeira, Funchal, just 12 min away from the city center of Funchal by foot. Breakfast is very nice, they have multiple entertainment options every evening and i loved the piano playing at 6 pm at the lobby. Parking is also perfect in the garage. So I cant say anything negative about this hotel. Fully recommended!
