Expert Review: Salvaterra Country House & SPA

Salvaterra Country House & SPA, a Michelin One-Key property nestled in the tranquil Ribatejo region of Portugal, offers guests a serene and luxurious escape reminiscent of a tropical oasis. Approximately 40 minutes from Lisbon, this country house is highly praised for its distinctive design, intimate atmosphere, and exceptional service.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Salvaterra Country House & SPA is overwhelmingly positive, with an "exceptional" rating of 9.5 based on 305 reviews on Booking.com. Guests consistently describe it as a "beautiful boutique hotel" and a "perfect romantic getaway," often drawing comparisons to the lush aesthetics of Bali or Moroccan riads. It is lauded as an "oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon," offering serenity and seclusion.

Key Highlights

Guests particularly adore the hotel's stunning tropical gardens, which house over 185 botanical species and a chemical-free outdoor swimming pool that resembles a Henri Rousseau painting. The spa facilities, including a sauna, Turkish bath, and a unique wood-fired Dutch hot tub set in the gardens, are significant draws for relaxation and detoxification. The property's design and architecture, blending traditional Ribatejo culture with contemporary interiors and nature-inspired decor, are consistently highlighted. The private terraces, outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, and fire pit also contribute to a memorable stay. The Michelin Key itself recognizes hotels that excel in atmosphere, character, hospitality, interior design, service, comfort, upkeep, value, uniqueness, and authenticity.

Room Quality

The eight suites and villas at Salvaterra Country House & SPA are celebrated for their spaciousness, comfort, and intimate design. The decor features a "breezy contemporary-rustic style" with Balinese influences, evident in bamboo ceilings, rattan furniture, net-draped beds, bespoke tiles, and terracotta floors. Each room is designed to be a "home-away-from-home," offering organic cotton kimonos, smart TVs, Nespresso machines, kettles with Dammann Frères tea, minibars, and Meraki bath products. Many suites include a fireplace for colder months and bathtubs, with French doors opening onto private terraces or dense tropical foliage, ensuring privacy and garden views. Some accommodations also feature kitchenettes.

Dining Experience

Salvaterra Country House & SPA does not have a formal on-site restaurant. However, breakfast is included in the stay and is a highlight for many guests. It is delivered in a hamper to private terraces from April to November, or can be enjoyed in bed by a roaring fire during colder months. The continental breakfast typically includes local specialties, fresh juice, cheese, and fruits, though one guest noted a lack of "healthy options," describing it as "only sugar in fact." For other meals, guests can utilize the outdoor kitchen with a barbecue area, or explore local restaurants in nearby villages like Salvaterra de Magos and Santarém, some of which are recommended by the hotel for traditional or author cuisine. An honesty bar is available around the clock.

Service & Staff

The service and staff receive consistent praise for their welcoming, helpful, and attentive nature. Guests commend their efficiency and the personalized attention provided, making visitors feel "completely secluded, both from staff and other guests, but in a very natural way." The property offers private check-in and check-out for added convenience.

Location & Accessibility

Located in Foros de Salvaterra, Salvaterra de Magos, the country house is situated in the rural Ribatejo region, approximately 35-40 minutes' drive from Lisbon. The area is characterized by its green and fertile landscapes, offering a peaceful retreat. While a car is generally needed to explore the surroundings, the hotel's location serves as a gateway to various activities. These include river safaris on the Tagus, birdwatching at the Tagus Estuary, horseback riding through vineyards, wine tastings, and visits to Salvaterra's Royal Falconry. Nearby Santarém offers cobbled streets and Gothic churches for exploration.

Value & Pricing

While specific pricing can vary, Salvaterra Country House & SPA is positioned as an "affordable luxury country house." The Michelin Key award indicates that the hotel provides excellent value for the experience offered. Rates typically include a daily breakfast. Policies regarding children are clear, with charges for babies and older children.

Common Complaints

Despite overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few minor recurring issues have been noted. Some guests found the private villa pools to be "extremely cold," hindering their enjoyment, and suggested heating them. There was a comment about one villa's patio being shaded all day. One guest experienced noise from a nearby staff room in "Room number 3" and issues with hot water regulation in their bathroom, including a bathtub that lacked hot water. The property's proximity to a main road was also mentioned as a potential source of noise for suite bedrooms, though not for the more secluded villas. Lastly, the absence of a full-service restaurant on-site was cited as an inconvenience for some guests who prefer not to cook while on a relaxing trip.

This is truly an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon. It’s secluded in what felt like a tinte town. If staying here, keep that in mind. You definitely won’t wanna leave the property. It was so relaxing and beautiful, it felt like we were back in the Maldives. Wish we could have stayed longer.

This is a truly Bali like experience just 50 min away from Lisbon. The place is stunningly decorated and you can immerse into nature and Bali style bungalows. Definitely a great place for couples to get away for a weekend and enjoy some relaxing time. The only difficult part is the food catering, there are not many restaurants in the area that can deliver food so is better to bring your own ingre...

What a gem of a place!!! The accommodations were even more impressive than the photos. Rosa was a gem navigating our late arrival due to lost luggage at the airport and again days later with a late night luggage delivery. Top notch massage in such a nice setting. One of the best massages I've had! Seriously cannot thank the staff enough for the lovely stay!

My husband and I had an amazing time at Salvaterra Country & Spa. The great atmosphere and friendly staff made our stay memorable. The thoughtful details, delicious breakfast, comfortable bed, big bathroom with strong shower pressure, nice amenities, etc were all very much appreciated. Special thanks to Rosa for her hospitality. Can’t wait to return.

Disclaimer: There is little, to no transport in thie area. I highly recommend you organise a car for your stay. This was the only downside to our stay, that we hadn't realised how crucial a car was. It meant we got a bit stranded on our dinner to Benavente and we were in quite a panic trying to get back. Besides this the rooms are gorgeous! The site itself was such an oasis, greenery everywhere,...

Must be my favorite place around Lisbon so far. The villas are simply amazing, they made a stunning atmosphere that just doesn't feel like you're 40mins away from the capital. A small inconvenience with the restaurant options around but the shared kitchen is great and once they introduce more snack options it will be perfect.
