Expert Review: sala rattanakosin Bangkok
Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its exceptional location, stunning views, and dedicated service, establishing itself as a premier boutique hotel experience in the heart of Bangkok's historic district.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok generally receives an "Excellent" rating with a highly positive sentiment from guests, often scoring around 8.8 out of 10 on major booking platforms. Reviewers frequently highlight the hotel's breathtaking views, prime location, and outstanding staff performance as key factors contributing to a memorable stay.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok:
- Stunning Views: The hotel boasts unparalleled panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River and the iconic Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), especially from its river-view rooms, restaurant, and rooftop bar. Views of Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are also frequently mentioned.
- Exceptional Service: The staff is repeatedly praised for being friendly, helpful, attentive, and going above and beyond to assist guests.
- Prime Location: Its riverside setting offers immediate access to major historical attractions like Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, all within a 5-10 minute walk.
- Rooftop Bar & Restaurant: The rooftop bar is a major draw, offering spectacular sunset views and a relaxed atmosphere. The on-site restaurant also receives accolades for its delicious food and riverside ambiance.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel features an understated contemporary design, often described with a muted black and white motif, creating a clean, aesthetic, and organized environment. It blends modern comforts with traditional Thai design.
3. Room Quality
Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok offers 15 beautifully appointed rooms, designed in a contemporary style with warm textures and thoughtful details. Rooms come equipped with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, a safety deposit box, Marshall superior sound systems, Nespresso coffee machines, and curated mini-bars. Private bathrooms include a bidet, free toiletries, and bathrobes.
Available room types include Standard Double, Deluxe Double, Wat Po Deluxe, Wat Arun River View Deluxe, Corner River View Deluxe, and Wat Arun River View Suite, with sizes ranging from 25m² to 66m². Many rooms offer breathtaking views of the city, Wat Pho, or, most notably, the Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun. Guests describe rooms as clean, modern, aesthetic, and well-maintained.
A recurring criticism, however, is the design of some bathrooms. Some guests noted a lack of privacy due to a shared sliding door for the toilet and shower, reflective surfaces inside the door, and the sink being situated in the main bedroom area.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's main restaurant, Sala Rattanakosin Eatery & Bar, offers a diverse menu of traditional Thai, local, European, and Italian cuisines. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with breakfast options including à la carte, continental, American, and Full English/Irish, often enjoyed with stunning river views. The food is frequently praised as excellent and delicious by guests. The rooftop bar also provides a menu of small bites, sandwiches, and cocktails, and occasionally features BBQ nights. While the food quality is high, some guests find the pricing to be on the more expensive side for Bangkok.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok consistently receive exceptional feedback. Guests describe the team as "friendly," "helpful," "amazing," and "outstanding." Staff members are noted for being attentive, often checking in with guests, and willing to assist with any requests. They are particularly helpful with luggage, especially given the absence of an elevator in the property.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location is arguably its strongest asset. Situated directly on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, it offers unparalleled views and convenient access to Bangkok's most iconic historical sites. It is a short 5-10 minute walk to Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The hotel is also a 5-minute walk from Sanam Chai MRT station, providing easy connectivity to other parts of the city. Chinatown is a quick 5-minute taxi or tuk-tuk ride away. However, the hotel does not offer on-site parking, and some guests have noted that finding the hotel entrance within the small street can be a bit challenging initially.
7. Value & Pricing
Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok is a 4-star property, and while it delivers a high-quality experience, some guests note that the dining can be expensive for Bangkok standards. Room rates can vary, with average weeknight prices around ₪846 (approximately $230 USD), though deals can be found starting from around ₪347 (approximately $95 USD). Some guests have found it to be good value for money, especially considering the stunning views and prime location. However, some complaints include "hidden charges" such as a 10% service charge and 7% VAT added to bills, and being charged for still water in rooms, which can impact the perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, common criticisms include:
- No Elevator: This is the most frequently mentioned issue, as the hotel's rooms are spread across four floors accessible only by stairs. Staff are available to assist with luggage.
- Noise from Rooftop Bar: Some guests have reported that the loud music from the rooftop bar late at night can be disruptive, making it hard to sleep.
- Bathroom Configuration: As mentioned in Room Quality, the design of some bathrooms with shared sliding doors for the toilet and shower, reflective surfaces, and the sink in the bedroom has been a point of contention for privacy.
- Slow Restaurant Service: A few guests experienced noticeably slow service at the restaurant, particularly for drinks and food orders.
- Hidden Charges: The addition of a 10% service charge and 7% VAT, along with charges for still water in rooms, has been a source of frustration for some guests.

The location is easy to find, with three floors. Reservations are required; many people come without them and can't get a table. The portions are decent, the fried squid is good, and the soup is also good. The price is mid-to-high range, but the key is the great location, directly opposite Wat Arun. It costs around $60 per person.
