Expert Review: Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa
The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa in Épernay, France, stands as a beacon of luxury in the heart of the Champagne region, earning the prestigious Three Michelin Keys distinction, signifying an extraordinary stay with unparalleled service and a unique experience. Praised for its breathtaking views, exceptional service, and world-class amenities, it offers a sophisticated retreat for discerning travelers.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently rating it "exceptional" across various platforms, scoring highly for cleanliness (9.7-9.8), comfort (9.8), staff (9.6), and facilities (9.6). It is frequently described as "beautiful," "clean, welcoming and serene," and like "something out of a fairytale". Many consider it the "best luxury hotel in Champagne". While the experience is generally outstanding, a few guests have noted that despite the high cost, some experiences, such as a Christmas stay, lacked the anticipated "wow factor" or found the design "a bit too corporate and impersonal".
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several standout features:
- Location & Views: The hotel's elevated position offers "sweeping views" of the Marne Valley, Épernay, and the surrounding vineyards, often described as "amazing" and "drop-dead gorgeous". This panorama is central to the guest experience.
- Spa & Wellness: The expansive 15,000-square-foot spa is a "haven of tranquility". It features a 25-meter indoor pool and a 16-meter outdoor infinity pool, both offering stunning vineyard vistas. Amenities include a hammam, sauna, hot tubs, a 24-hour fitness center, and nine treatment rooms, including two for couples, offering a wide range of services from massages to facials.
- Service: The "impeccable," "professional and top-notch" service is frequently highlighted, with staff demonstrating a "genuine commitment to guest satisfaction".
- Design: The hotel beautifully blends a 19th-century coaching inn with a modernist wing, featuring a "luxurious, contemporary feel". Interiors are inspired by the region's heritage, using natural materials, gold and silver hues, and chandeliers to evoke the "effervescence" of Champagne.
3. Room Quality
The 47 luxurious rooms and suites are designed with comfort and elegance in mind, nearly all offering "magical Champagne views" and a balcony or terrace. Rooms are spacious, with Junior Suites typically around 474 sq ft. They feature a "French sleek design" with a revisited classic style, often incorporating soft fabrics, wooden floors, and sometimes floral wallpaper. Guests appreciate the "well appointed" and "tastefully designed" spaces. Bathrooms are notably generous, often including freestanding bathtubs and walk-in showers. In-room amenities include memory foam beds, flat-screen TVs, Illy coffee machines, Diptyque bath products, and complimentary soft drinks from the minibar. Some guests have noted that even higher category rooms might have narrow balconies not entirely suitable for sitting.
4. Dining Experience
The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa offers exceptional dining options:
- Le Royal: This Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, led by Chef Christophe Raoux or Maxime Férique, provides an elevated culinary journey. It offers a five-course tasting menu and à la carte options, showcasing local produce and expert champagne pairings. Dishes are praised for being "delicious," "flavourful and light," and "beautifully presented".
- Le Bellevue: A more casual, brasserie-style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, often on an expansive terrace overlooking the vineyards.
- Breakfast: An extensive buffet and à la carte options are available, including champagne, warm dishes, and fresh pastries. While generally excellent, some guests were surprised by additional charges for items like Eggs Benedict, considering the high room rates.
- Abysse Bar: Connects the two restaurants and provides cocktails, wines, and snacks, with outdoor seating available in warmer months.
- Room Service: Available 24 hours, though some experiences with room service meals have been mixed, with some finding certain dishes overpriced or underwhelming.
5. Service & Staff
The hotel's service and staff receive consistent acclaim for being "impeccable," "professional and top-notch," and "extremely friendly and helpful, attentive and unobtrusive". Staff are noted for their responsiveness to requests, from arranging wine tastings to providing swift room service. Housekeeping is highlighted for being "meticulously cleaned and maintained". However, one review mentioned slow and "a bit snobby" service at the bar.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is strategically located on a hill in Champillon, offering unparalleled views of the Marne Valley and vineyards. This location serves as an "excellent base" for exploring the famed Champagne region and visiting prestigious Champagne houses such as Moët et Chandon and Taittinger. Nearby attractions include the Théâtre des vignes and Point de Vue de Champillon.
Épernay train station is approximately a 15-minute drive away (4.3 miles), and Champagne-Ardenne TGV Station is 16.6 km. For air travel, Châlons Vatry Airport (XCR) is about a 50-minute drive, while Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is around 90 minutes away. While car transfers can be arranged, renting a car is often recommended for guests wishing to explore the picturesque region at their own pace. The hotel also provides an electric car charging station.
7. Value & Pricing
The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is considered a high-end property, with prices typically starting from around US$973 to US$1,023 per night for standard rooms, often including breakfast. While "pricey," many guests feel it offers "good value with quality service" given the luxurious experience. However, some have expressed that additional charges for certain breakfast items seemed unjustified given the premium room rates.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Dining Consistency: A few guests found the main restaurant's dining experience to occasionally fall short of expectations, with some dishes lacking the finesse expected for the high prices.
- Breakfast Add-ons: The additional cost for certain breakfast items, despite the already high room rates, was a point of contention for some.
- Balcony Limitations: In some higher-category rooms, balconies were described as narrow or not ideal for sitting, which could be a disappointment for guests expecting a full outdoor lounging experience.
- Impersonal Feel: A subjective complaint mentioned the hotel's style feeling "a bit too corporate and impersonal" to some guests.
- Bar Service: Isolated feedback indicated that bar staff could be slow and perceived as snobby, with drinks being overpriced.
- Welcome Amenities: One guest was disappointed by the absence of a complimentary bottle of champagne as a welcome amenity, considering the hotel's location and reputation.

This was my first time staying at the hotel, and I chose it for its breathtaking views — quite possibly the most beautiful view in all of Champagne — and its outstanding infrastructure. What I didn’t expect was how deeply meaningful this place would become to me — it was here that I proposed to my then-girlfriend. From months in advance, the hotel team helped me carefully plan and organize every ...

The breakfast was excellent, and you could either order a set breakfast or a la carte. Everything was delicious! We ordered room service twice, and the food was perfect, just like in a restaurant. The lobster pasta with caviar was abs...
