Expert Review: Prospect Berkshires

Prospect Berkshires, located in Egremont, United States, is a Michelin Key Selected property that garners overwhelmingly positive reviews for its blend of Scandinavian sophistication and New England charm, often described as a modern landscape hotel.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Prospect Berkshires is exceptional. Guests frequently rate it highly, with Booking.com showing an impressive 9.7 out of 10 based on 16 reviews, with perfect scores for location, facilities, and comfort, and nearly perfect scores for cleanliness and staff. Reviewers consistently praise its luxurious, sleek styling, the beautiful natural surroundings, and the sense of peace and inspiration it provides. Many guests express a desire to return, highlighting its appeal as a relaxing, stylish, comfortable, and family-friendly getaway.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the property's stunning lakeside location, offering a wealth of amenities and activities. The exquisite Scandinavian-inspired design, which blends seamlessly with the natural landscape, is a major draw. Key highlights include the exceptional facilities such as lakeside saunas, a year-round heated saltwater swimming pool with a view, tennis and pickleball courts, and complimentary bicycles for exploring the area. The thoughtful design extends to elements like heated floors, dimmable lights, mood lighting, and blackout curtains in the cabins, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The hotel encourages guests to unplug and connect with nature, offering a tranquil escape from city life.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Prospect Berkshires consist of 49 comfortable, modern, and thoughtfully designed cabins, with most featuring private bathrooms and some smaller rooms offering a shared bathhouse experience. Cabins are typically around 400 sq ft and offer lake, garden, or mountain views. They are air-conditioned, soundproofed, and include modern amenities like free WiFi, a refrigerator, and tea/coffee makers. The design emphasizes rustic minimalism, with natural cedar cladding, comfortable beds on wooden platforms, lounge chairs, and cozy window nooks. Intentional design choices include the absence of televisions to encourage unplugging, and the use of organic cotton linens, towels, and kimono-style robes from the co-owner's company, Sister Moons. Some larger cabins also feature fold-out double beds to accommodate families.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, The Cliff House, is a significant highlight, offering an incredible menu and breathtaking lake views. It serves locally sourced, high-quality local and European cuisines, with a focus on seasonal ingredients and options for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets. Guests can enjoy coffee and pastries, a full breakfast on weekends, and dinner from Thursday to Sunday, with reservations highly recommended. The culinary program, developed in collaboration with local chef Nancy Thomas and led by Chef Damian Evangelous, features a seasonally inspired menu including small plates like pintxos and croquettes, as well as heartier options such as grilled monkfish and New York strip steak. While some guests note the restaurant can be expensive, the delicious breakfast and overall ambiance are consistently praised. A seasonal Snack Bar at the Pool House offers picnic-inspired fare, snacks, and refreshing drinks.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Prospect Berkshires receive exceptional feedback for their warmth, friendliness, and attentiveness. Guests appreciate the welcoming vibe from the moment they check in, with staff often described as "super helpful, kind and made us feel welcome." The check-in process is seamless and text-based, allowing guests to communicate needs and receive cabin details and door codes via phone. Staff are readily available to assist with luggage using golf carts and can arrange sauna sessions or transport around the property via text.

6. Location & Accessibility

Prospect Berkshires is nestled in North Egremont, Massachusetts, within the picturesque "sylvan Massachusetts highlands," conveniently located where Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut meet. It sits on the serene shores of Prospect Lake, offering a sense of peaceful remoteness. The retreat is approximately a three-hour drive from both New York City and Boston, making it an accessible escape for city dwellers. Albany International Airport (ALB) is about an hour's drive away, and the nearest train station, Pittsfield, is under 40 minutes by car, with direct connections to major cities. The property offers free on-site private parking, and golf buggies are available for guest transportation around the expansive grounds.

The area boasts numerous attractions, including:

  • Cultural Sites: Norman Rockwell Museum (11 miles), Tanglewood (16 miles), MASS MoCA, and the Circle Museum.
  • Towns: Great Barrington, a charming town with shops and restaurants (e.g., Prairie Whale, GB Eats), is just a 7-8 minute drive away. Lenox is also within a 20-minute drive.
  • Outdoor Activities: The Appalachian Trail, Monument Mountain for hiking, and Catamount and Butternut Mountains for winter skiing, snowboarding, and tubing are all nearby. The resort itself offers water sports on the lake (non-motorized), an outdoor pool, and tennis courts.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing can vary, rooms at Prospect Berkshires typically start from around $218-$250 per night. Guests generally rate the value for money positively, with Booking.com giving it an 8.7 out of 10. The on-site Cliff House restaurant is noted as being on the expensive side. The hotel also offers various deals, such as a "Winter Cabin Pass" (pay for five nights, stay for eight between January and March), "Third Night Free" promotions, and "Midweek Escape" rates. Additionally, the property offers significant discounts for locals.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of criticism have been noted:

  • Dining Cost & Reservations: The Cliff House restaurant can be expensive, and reservations are highly recommended as they tend to fill up quickly. One guest also found the dinner experience less "stand-out" compared to the breakfast.
  • Pet Policy in Specific Cabins: Guests with dog allergies should be aware that Knoll cabins are pet-friendly, and a clear warning for these cabins is suggested.
  • No Televisions: The absence of televisions in the cabins is an intentional design choice to encourage guests to unplug, but this might be a point of contention for some travelers.
  • Local Community Pushback: There was some initial local community acrimony regarding the transformation of the former RV campgrounds into an upscale resort, though the owners have made efforts to engage with and benefit the local community.

Prospect Berkshire Resort was the perfect stay for our family ski trip. Its location so close to Catamount made everything incredibly convenient, just a short drive after a full day on the slopes. The lodges are very cozy and comfortable, exactly what you want after a long, cold day of skiing. It felt warm, relaxing, and thoughtfully designed for unwinding. The real star, though, is the on-site re...

We came for a winter weekend getaway and it was exactly what we were looking for. The property is beautiful and thoughtfully designed, with cabins, a restaurant, pool, saunas, and plenty of space to relax. A hot tub would have been a great addition, but otherwise the amenities are excellent. While some summer activities like kayaking and tennis were unavailable, they look great and give us a reas...

We had a great stay. The setting was lovely. I enjoyed the sauna. The food and service at The Cliffs Restaurant was great. The reservations seem to fill up quickly so it's a good idea to book those ahead of time. I would only warn that if you have dog allergies do not book the Knolls cabins. I would recommend there should be a clear warning that the Knolls cabins have dogs stay in them. We booked...

Great place, super friendly staff that you can communicate directly with via text message. They have golf carts around the property that they’ll drive you around on. Cabins are thoughtfully designed, well lit, heated floors and really comfortable beds. The saunas were a highlight. Tew big communal saunas with a heated pool right outside and a private lakeside sauna that can easily be reserved via ...

The location is perfect with easy access to Great Barrington (few minutes), Lenox (20 minutes), and North Adams (1 hour). The design is wonderful. The cabins were very warm and had floor heating for the bathroom and part of the hallway. We stayed in the lakeside cabins which we highly recommend. The property is so...

We had the most amazing stay at Prospect Berkshires. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful from the minute we checked in until the moment we checked out. The cabin we stayed in was super cute and comfy. We chose the shared bath house option, which was very nice and well maintained. The shower and high-end soap were very refreshing. The whole facility is gorgeous. Walking around the diff...
