1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "charming getaway," a "beautiful and serene oasis," and a highly recommended boutique hotel. It has earned a Michelin Key, recognizing its excellence in architecture, interior design, outstanding service, unique character, and value. Online reviews consistently highlight the hotel's ability to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience, especially for couples, as it is an adults-only property.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several key aspects of Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa:

  • Service & Staff: The staff receives top marks for being "incredibly accommodating and friendly," "welcoming, attentive," and "top-notch." Many guests recount receiving exceptional, personalized service.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's historic Mission-style architecture, dating back to the 1920s and 40s, and its design-led interiors by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard are frequently lauded. Colorful patterned fabrics, Catalina tiles, and impressive antiques create a unique and elegant atmosphere. Lush, terraced gardens with fountains, potted plants, and cozy hideaways contribute to a peaceful, tropical oasis feel.
  • Amenities: The heated outdoor pool with ocean views, the spa and wellness center offering various treatments (including an outdoor treatment area with bay views), and the inviting common areas such as the library and lobby fireplace are much appreciated. The hotel also provides a complimentary wine and cheese reception nightly.
  • Location: Its position on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, offering ocean views from various spots, is a significant draw.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa are generally described as comfortable, cozy, and elegantly designed, without being kitschy. Designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard's touch is evident in the colorful fabrics and wallpapers. Some rooms feature gas fireplaces, adding to the ambiance. The hotel offers 23 units, including six suites. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms can be on the smaller side, and not all rooms offer ocean views. In-room amenities typically include a Samsung TV, air-conditioning, a minibar with Dean & DeLuca products, and Cowshed bath products.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience is a notable highlight for many guests. A cooked-to-order breakfast is served daily, often featuring "delicious frittatas" and other excellent choices. While breakfast may be included via a resort fee, it's generally well-regarded for its quality. Guests also enjoy welcome drinks upon arrival and homemade cookies in the afternoon. The evening wine and cheese reception is a complimentary and popular offering. The hotel also features an on-site bistro for additional dining options.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa are consistently rated as exceptional. Guests frequently commend the team for being "very helpful, kind and accommodating." From check-in upgrades to thoughtful gestures, the staff goes above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay, creating a personalized and welcoming atmosphere. A 24-hour reception and concierge services further enhance the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa is nestled on a terraced hillside in Laguna Beach, across the busy South Coast Highway from the ocean. It offers easy walking access to a beautiful beach and nearby restaurants, such as Rumari. A bus stop is conveniently located right outside the hotel, offering accessible transport. While public beaches are easily accessible, it's worth noting that the hotel itself is not directly on the beach side of the Pacific Coast Highway. For exploring the wider area, a car is recommended. John Wayne Airport is less than a 30-minute drive away, while Los Angeles International Airport is a 90-minute to two-hour drive depending on traffic.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key Selected property, Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa offers a luxury boutique experience. Room prices typically start from approximately $193 to $250.09 per night, excluding taxes and fees. Guests should anticipate a daily service fee (also referred to as a resort fee) which covers amenities such as overnight self-parking, Wi-Fi, and the morning breakfast. While this fee is an additional cost, many guests consider the overall experience and included amenities to be a good value for the quality of service and unique ambiance provided.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Size & Noise: Some guests have mentioned that certain rooms can be small. Additionally, some rooms may experience significant traffic or interior noise.
  • Parking: The parking lot can be cramped and may not accommodate all guests when the hotel is at full capacity, although free street parking is often available nearby.
  • Breakfast Quality (in specific instances): While generally praised, a few guests have noted issues with breakfast quality in certain instances.
  • Adults-Only Policy: While a draw for couples seeking a romantic getaway, the adults-only policy (no one under 18 allowed) might be a limitation for families traveling with children.

We loved our stay at this historic inn in Laguna Beach. It was charming, quaint, and beautifully preserved while still offering modern comforts. The staff and service they provided was exceptional, far better than your typical hotel. We truly felt treated like royalty. The location was convenient to everything the area has to offer. Everything was lovely, and we can't wait to return.

Casa Laguna is a gem of a hotel and spa in laguna beach. My wife and I came here for the first time for our 9 year wedding anniversary the week before Christmas. We didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into (in a very positive way). We checked in at 5:00PM and Kent showed us to our room. All along the way he gave us a thorough history of Casa Laguna's place in Laguna Beach history. F...

Our favorite places to stay near Laguna Beach! Cool rooms and lush setting. Kent & Cody were awesome taking carw of us. Get an ocean view room for killer sunsets (and even a green flash if sky is clear enough). Expect some noise being near the PCH, but the hotel grounds are so relaxing it fades away. Opt for the resort fee to not worry about breakfast, which had great options (still dreaming about...

Fantastic boutique hotel to stay at while in Laguna Beach. The hotel grounds are beautiful, the rooms comfortable, and the staff accommodating and welcoming. The breakfast offering were all delicious as were the fresh baked cookies in the evenings. Bonus that there is a free Laguna trolley stop right in front that you can take to pretty much anywhere in town without having to bother with driving. ...

The service was exceptional from start to finish, truly some of the best I’ve experienced. Breakfast was delicious and thoughtfully done, and the complimentary cookies were sooo good. The ocean views were absolutely beautiful. Ken was especially kind and helpful and made the stay feel extra special. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience to celebrate my birthday. Highly recommend.

This place gets our highest recommendation. It is an absolutely lovely property with a varied, compact landscape. Our charming Deluxe Ocean View room indeed had quite a water view considering it was on the other side of PCH, and it definitely made the most of its 200-plus square feet. The $37 optional resort fee is the biggest no-brainer in the history of hospitality. For starters, you get free pa...
