2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several standout features:
- Location & Views: The resort's prime blufftop location offers stunning, gratuitous ocean vistas from almost every part of the property, including guest rooms and dining areas. The picturesque setting with meandering paths down to the beaches is a major draw.
- Service Excellence: The personalized, polished, and attentive service is frequently lauded as outstanding, with staff often remembering guest preferences.
- Design & Ambiance: The property showcases a classic California Craftsman architectural style, exuding an indoor/outdoor living vibe that is both luxurious and relaxed, without exaggerated opulence. Museum-quality art further enhances the sophisticated ambiance.
- Amenities: The diverse pool options, including a main pool, adults-only pool, kiddie pool, and hot tub, are highly appreciated. The 20,000-square-foot Spa Montage, with its extensive facilities and treatments, is also a significant highlight. The resort is also notably family-friendly, offering amenities like a kids' club, teddy bears at check-in, cookie-decorating, and nightly s'mores.
3. Room Quality
Montage Laguna Beach offers 250 well-appointed rooms, suites, and bungalows, with standard rooms starting at a generous 500 square feet. Rooms are described as bright, airy, clean, and comfortable, featuring private balconies or patios that almost always provide ocean views. Recent renovations in 2019 updated furnishings, contemporary art, and color palettes. Key features include:
- Comfort: Guests praise the comfortable, often feathertop, king beds with goose down pillows and 400-thread count sheets.
- Bathrooms: Large marble bathrooms come with deep soaking tubs and separate rain showers, complete with luxury products and amenities.
- In-room Technology: Rooms include 32-inch flat-screen TVs with DVD players, multiple phones, computer/fax hookups, network data ports, minibars, and Wi-Fi access.
- Family-Friendly Options: Connecting rooms and baby-proofed rooms are available upon request.
4. Dining Experience
The resort offers several distinct dining experiences, frequently lauded as "exceptional".
- Studio: The signature restaurant, Studio, perched on a 50-foot coastal bluff, offers California-influenced French cuisine with spectacular ocean views. It's considered a fine dining experience, sourcing seasonal produce from its own garden.
- The Loft: This all-day dining restaurant provides panoramic Pacific views and a diverse menu, including a popular breakfast, wood-fired rotisserie chicken, and an extensive cheese bar with over 50 options.
- Mosaic Bar & Grille: A poolside option for casual dining, serving seafood tacos, salads, and cocktails.
- Lobby Lounge: Offers light bites and an extensive selection of wines and craft cocktails in an elegant yet understated open-air space with live piano music.
- Breakfast: The breakfast at The Loft is particularly well-regarded, with guests appreciating the quality and variety of dishes.
5. Service & Staff
Service at Montage Laguna Beach is often described as "outstanding across the board" by many guests, from housekeeping to the front desk and pool staff. Staff members are noted for being personalized, polished, attentive, friendly, and warm. They are praised for anticipating needs and making guests feel comfortable. However, some isolated experiences mention staff and customer service being "less than disappointing" or "unhelpful, rude and honestly not up to a 5-star standard". There was also a past incident of alleged discrimination involving a manager, which created a negative experience for a group of guests.
6. Location & Accessibility
The resort boasts a highly desirable location in Laguna Beach, perched on a dramatic bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It offers direct access to picturesque local beaches and tide pools, which are ideal for exploration. The hotel is conveniently located:
- Proximity to Town: Laguna Beach town is a "gem," and guests can easily access it via a free trolley. The area is known for art galleries and small shops.
- Nearby Dining: Casual sushi and Mexican spots are available right across the street, offering walkable off-property meal options.
- Transportation: It's an approximately 25-minute Uber ride from John Wayne Airport (SNA). The property is generally 5-10 minutes from most desired destinations in the area.
- Activities: The resort and surrounding area offer diverse activities such as surfing, skimboarding lessons, whale watching, bike tours, snorkeling, and complimentary fitness classes like Beach Boot Camp and Pilates.
7. Value & Pricing
Montage Laguna Beach is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this exclusivity. Nightly rates are typically high, with average prices ranging from approximately $804 to $1,324 per room. While consistently noted as "very pricey," many guests conclude that the overall experience, stunning views, and top-tier service justify the cost. Promotions such as daily resort credits and complimentary view upgrades are sometimes available, which can enhance the perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
Despite its many accolades, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted:
- High Pricing: The cost of parking (e.g., $75 overnight) and overall resort services can be considered "very very pricey" by some guests.
- Spa Access: Access to the spa facilities for non-service guests may require a significant day pass fee (e.g., $170), and some found the spa area to be smaller and occasionally crowded with non-resort guests.
- Beach Crowding: While the hotel provides dedicated chairs and service, the immediate beach area is public and can get crowded.
- Check-in Experience: Some guests have experienced late check-ins with poor communication regarding room readiness.
- Dining Consistency/Pricing: While overall food quality is high, some guests have found the dining "solid" rather than "stellar". Inconsistent wine pricing and limited basic options at some venues (like the pool) have also been mentioned.
- Property Age/Maintenance: One recent review (2024) suggested the property could use "a bit of a facelift" to live up to the high expectations set by its price point.
- Customer Service Incidents: While generally excellent, there have been rare instances of disappointing or rude staff interactions, including a serious allegation of discrimination.

You can’t help but relax when visiting this property but a couple of “shout-outs” to some of the staff. Excellent service from Johnny at The Loft restaurant for the morning shift, Kody working the Lobby Lounge at night and Kayvon during the day…. Great attitude, attention and personality from all three. Great job.

This review only reflects the quality of sleep you’ll get at this beautiful hotel: Unfortunately the mattresses are protected with two non breathable plastic barriers.
