The sentiment points to a serene and captivating experience, deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Monaci delle Terre Nere:

  • Location & Views: The hotel's position on the fertile slopes of Mount Etna provides breathtaking panoramic views of the volcano on one side and the Ionian Sea on the other. The extensive grounds, with vineyards, olive groves, and orchards, are a major draw.
  • Design & Ambiance: The property expertly blends the rustic charm of an 18th-century villa and converted farm buildings with modern architectural lines and contemporary design. This "chic retreat" features lava stone walls, wooden beams, modern art, and designer furnishings, creating an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere.
  • Eco-Consciousness & Farm-to-Table Philosophy: A strong commitment to sustainability and organic farming is central to the Monaci delle Terre Nere experience. The estate's organic gardens and vineyards directly supply the restaurant.
  • Service & Hospitality: The staff are frequently described as "impeccable," "friendly," "helpful," and "charming," contributing significantly to the welcoming and at-home feeling.
  • Amenities: Highlights include an impressive outdoor infinity pool with views of Etna and the sea, free Wi-Fi, and the availability of golf carts for navigating the expansive property. Mountain bikes and Smart e-bikes are also available for guests to borrow.

3. Room Quality

Monaci delle Terre Nere offers 27 rooms, including 15 suites and four private pool villas, scattered across the sprawling estate in converted farm buildings and new constructions. Rooms are uniquely decorated, blending original elements like lava stone walls and exposed wooden beams with contemporary design and custom furnishings.

  • Comfort & Design: Guests generally find the rooms spacious, light, and bright, with clean lines and modern simplicity. Upscale in-room amenities include independent air conditioning, coffee machines with organic pods, private wine stashes featuring estate-produced Etna wines, bathrobes, slippers, and Sonos sound systems. Many rooms also feature wood-burning fireplaces and bathtubs.
  • Variety: Accommodations range from beamed, airy villas to lava-walled hideaways. Some suites feature glass walls, and private pool villas are also available.
  • Potential for Disappointment: One guest noted an uncomfortable bed and a small bathroom in their stand-alone suite, also missing a comfortable sofa. Notably, there are no TVs in the rooms, which some may find a "pro" for a serene retreat, but laptops and iPads are available.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Monaci delle Terre Nere is an integral part of the experience, deeply rooted in its organic, farm-to-table philosophy.

  • Restaurant Quality: The on-site restaurant, Locanda Nerello, is consistently praised as "amazing" and "excellent" for dinner, offering refined Sicilian cuisine informed by the mountain and the sea. The menu celebrates Etna's bounty with organic produce from the estate's gardens, line-caught seafood, and heritage meats. Dishes are executed with contemporary precision, with seasonal tasting menus and à la carte options.
  • Breakfast: Buffet breakfast is included in the room rates and features home-baked breads, organic pods, local cheeses, nuts, honey, and eggs from the resident chickens. While generally good, one guest mentioned it was "just ok" compared to the dinner.
  • Wine: The hotel has its own vineyards and offers wine tastings. The wines are local and delicious, though some note them to be expensive.

  • Hospitality: Guests frequently highlight the "impeccable and very friendly" service, describing staff as "charming," "helpful," and "fun." The owners, Guido and Federica, along with their team, are noted for making guests feel "right at home" and providing a "5-star service."
  • Attention to Detail: The team is recognized for their attention to detail, which contributes to a perfect guest experience.
  • Accessibility Assistance: Given the property's expansive and sometimes hilly terrain, staff are readily available to transport guests via golf buggy, which is a much-appreciated service.

6. Location & Accessibility

Monaci delle Terre Nere is situated at the eastern edge of Etna National Park, 1.2 miles outside the town of Zafferana Etnea, and at an altitude of 1640 feet above sea level.

  • Neighborhood & Surroundings: The hotel is surrounded by a vast 62-acre working farm with vineyards, orchards, and vegetable gardens. This secluded setting provides a sense of peace and tranquility, offering inspiring views of both Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea.
  • Attractions: It is conveniently located for exploring Mount Etna, with hiking and cable car access points nearby. The Ionian coast is a 20-minute drive away, and Taormina is a half-hour drive. The hotel offers a daily complimentary shuttle service to and from Taormina.
  • Transport: A car is generally needed to get to and around the area, though the journey from Catania Fontanarossa Airport (36km away) is straightforward. The hotel's cobbled hills and wild expanses mean that guests should be prepared to walk or utilize the on-call golf buggies for transportation around the property.

  • Worth the Cost: Guests generally perceive the experience to be worth the cost, often describing it as an "amazing find" and a place where you can "truly relax and enjoy Sicily." The value for money is rated 8.3. The quality of the food and wine, the exceptional service, and the unique setting contribute to this perception of value. However, some note that evening meals and wines can be on the pricier side.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Minimum Stay: The hotel requires a two-night minimum stay, and a three-night minimum during peak periods, which may not suit all travelers' schedules or budgets.
  • Accessibility on Property: While golf carts are available, the hotel's expansive grounds with cobbled hills and wild expanses can be challenging for some guests, particularly if they prefer to walk, and some rooms are a considerable distance from the main building. One reviewer mentioned "dissestated roads" on the property that could be an issue for luxury cars.
  • Breakfast Quality: While generally good, a few guests found breakfast to be "just ok" compared to the exceptional dinner experience.
  • Room Comfort (Isolated Incident): One guest reported an uncomfortable bed and a small bathroom, and the absence of a cozy sofa in their suite.
  • Cost of Dining/Wine: While high quality, some guests found the evening meals and wines to be expensive.

Loved loved loved our stay here! What a quaint retreat. The staff is incredible all around — from the second you arrive with a complimentary drink to when they’re packing your car to leave. The bar area is super cool and we loved the live music on certain nights. The design of the rooms is also impeccable. Though some of the experiences are on the expensive side, we had a lot of fun doing them (c...

Came here for our last leg of our honeymoon and was only ok - price considered. Our room was above the kitchen even though we booked a suite. Service was OK by the pool but great at dinners. Food was good just very expensive. Beautiful views and great property - would recommend a villa to fully experience but this place is insanely expensive for what you get.

This place is a stunning vinyard farm with beautiful architecture. The food in the restaurant truly deserves the Michelin star. BUT there are odd issue like the cushions on the pool lounge chairs all slide off (easy fix just add friction tape) and they don’t offer free water at the pool. Little things like they seem to try and charge for EVERYTHING make the value and beauty of this place decrease…

We stayed at Monaci for one night and had a lovely experience overall. At check-in, we were welcomed with a glass of excellent wine and a friendly chat at the bar. The bar has a beautiful and unique interior, and the staff were very attentive and pleasant to talk to. The hotel itself is good, but we had a series of unexpected, minor issues that left us with mixed impressions. The value for money ...
