Expert Review: Margot House

Margot House in Barcelona, Spain, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its intimate atmosphere, prime location, and exceptional service. Guests frequently describe it as a "hidden gem" that offers a serene, home-like feeling amidst the bustling city.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall rating for Margot House is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests scoring it as "excellent" and "exceptional" (8.9 and 10 on various platforms). The sentiment is one of delight and satisfaction, with visitors frequently commending the personalized experience and the feeling of being at home.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Margot House:

  • Service & Staff: The staff is frequently described as "absolutely wonderful," "accommodating," "warm and friendly," and "attentive." They are noted for going "above and beyond" to assist guests.
  • Location: The hotel's location on Passeig de Gràcia, directly opposite Casa Batlló and a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla, is a major draw. It is considered "perfect" and "superb" by many.
  • Design: The interior design, crafted by renowned interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, is described as contemporary, welcoming, and stylish, with a "Scandi sensibility" featuring whitewashed walls and mid-century Scandinavian furniture.
  • Amenities: Complimentary minibars stocked daily with water, cola, and beer are a much-appreciated perk. Other valued amenities include free Wi-Fi, Aesop bath products, and a library.

3. Room Quality

Margot House offers a limited number of rooms (nine, including five suites), contributing to its intimate feel. Rooms are generally described as "perfect," "beautifully decorated," "spacious," "clean," and "cozy."

  • Comfort: Beds are noted as "extremely comfortable" and "cloud-like" with premium bedding.
  • Design: Rooms feature a sparse yet stylish aesthetic, with raw-concrete and light-wood ensuite bathrooms in premium rooms, often including double-rainfall showers. Deluxe Suites may feature a standalone bathtub and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Passeig de Gràcia and Casa Batlló.
  • In-Room Amenities: Standard in-room amenities include air conditioning, heating, flat-screen Smart TVs, safes, hairdryers, slippers, bathrobes, and free toiletries. Some rooms also include a Nespresso coffee machine.
  • Windows/Natural Light: A common point of feedback is the varying natural light. Some rooms face an air shaft, making them very dark, which can be good for jet lag but less ideal for waking up. Guests recommend requesting rooms 1, 2, 4, or 5 for street-facing windows with ample natural sunlight. Some interior rooms may lack windows entirely.

4. Dining Experience

While Margot House does not have a full-service restaurant for lunch and dinner, it excels in its breakfast offering and provides round-the-clock snacks.

  • Breakfast: The "excellent" buffet breakfast is served in the Margot Sala, often with views of Casa Batlló. It features hot and cold stations, pastries baked by Chef Jaime Santianes, muesli, fresh seasonal fruits, meats and cheeses, freshly-squeezed orange juice, and classic egg dishes. While some English guests found the selection "a little limited for the English taste," they praised the scrambled eggs and omelets.
  • Snacks & Bar: The kitchen staff can prepare snacks 24 hours a day upon request. There is also a vintage honesty bar cart in the library, stocked with wines, cava, and cocktail fixings.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Margot House is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Staff members are praised for being "attentive," "courteous," "helpful," and making guests feel like family. Many reviews mention staff going "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable stay, including offering cultural tips and local recommendations. The hotel also provides a 24-hour front desk.

6. Location & Accessibility

Margot House boasts an "excellent" and "perfect" location on Passeig de Gràcia, a prominent and stylish street in Barcelona's Eixample district.

  • Attractions: It is situated directly in front of Casa Batlló and is within a 10-minute walk of major landmarks like Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla. Casa Milà is also a few blocks away.
  • Neighborhood: The hotel is well-placed for exploring various neighborhoods on foot, including El Raval, the Gothic Quarter, and Gracia.
  • Transport: Passeig de Gràcia metro station is nearby. An airport shuttle service can be arranged for an extra charge.
  • Accessibility: The hotel's public areas are accessible, and Room 8 is specially adapted for wheelchair users, featuring a roll-in shower, grab bars, and a handheld showerhead.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific price ranges vary, reviews suggest that Margot House offers good value, particularly when considering its prime location and high level of service. Some guests note that they were fortunate to get a discount on their stay, implying it can be a higher-end boutique experience. Rates for a double room can start from approximately $183.85 per night (EUR 157.27), with prices fluctuating. Self-parking is available for EUR 40 per day.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Noise: Some guests reported street noise during the night disturbing sleep, and also noise from within the building, including conversations in the hallway or reception. This is especially relevant in rooms with less soundproofing.
  • Key System: The practice of leaving the room key at reception every time you leave and having to ring a doorbell to re-enter was found inconvenient by some guests, with occasional waiting times.
  • Room Lighting/Windows: Some rooms, particularly those facing an air shaft or lacking windows, were noted for being dim or pitch black, which could be a drawback for guests desiring natural light.
  • Minor Room Issues: Isolated complaints included non-working sockets, a dripping toilet cistern, difficulty adjusting room temperature, and the absence of a kettle or larger mugs for coffee.
  • TV Channels: A few guests mentioned that the TV only offered Spanish channels and wasn't a smart TV, limiting entertainment options like Netflix.
  • Occasional Odors: One review mentioned a strong sewage smell coming from the bathroom each night in their room.

Margot House in Barcelona is by far the best accommodation I've experienced in the city. The team is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel at home from the moment you arrive. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Barcelona where luxury, culture, and stunning architecture meet. There are fantastic restaurants and shops within walking distance, and the metro is nearby, making i...

We booked their largest room and the room was sunny and elegant with a comfortable bed. The staff was kind and helpful and the common space was perfect for both breakfast and lounging with a book. It's small and intimate -- feels like an air bnb except with someone else preparing your breakfast. Book it, you won't regret it.

I booked at Margot House due to a recommendation in the Condé Nast magazine. I was quite disappointed. Good things first: location is indeed great and the design of the common areas quite nice and artsy, and Aesop products are a nice touch. That’s about it. Bad things: rooms without window and irregularly cleaned, very noisy and chatty staff at the reception whose endless chatting we could hear f...

So disappointed ! Despite a good online communication, this "hotel" has no direct access to the street, and this is not mentioned at all on their website or any platform. Our room was not only very used, with no natural light (meaning you need to keep the lights on all day long..), but we had to listen to the reception ringing phone and banging doors all night. We left right in the morning, after ...

Fantastic stay! You know what it feels like when you find something great but just enough under the radar to not be wildly adored by everyone else? That is this place. Reviews here are positive but undersell this small, very well-appointed, 9 bed boutique hotel in a perfect location. It has a great vibe, wonderful hospitality (they let me host guests for wine in one of the common rooms), great bre...

Had a wonderful time at the hotel. It was situated in the heart of Barcelona, really close to everything. Had the most splendid service from Andrea, she is simply amazing and ensured we had a beautiful stay. The other staff were also amazing, though Andrea stood out and went that extra mile to help us out. Thank you guys for the wonderful accomodation. Will definitely recommend and be back
