Expert Review: Mama Shelter Paris East
Mama Shelter Paris East: A Vibrant and Stylish Michelin Key Selection in Paris's 20th Arrondissement
Mama Shelter Paris East, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its unique design, comfortable accommodations, and lively atmosphere. With an overall rating of "very good" and an average score of 8.4 out of 10 from numerous guest reviews, it stands out as a distinctive and popular choice in the French capital. Michelin Guide also gives it an impressive "Overall Experience" score of 18.3 out of 20.
Key Highlights
Guests frequently commend Mama Shelter Paris East for its "fun interior," "stylish" vibe, and excellent design, masterminded by the renowned Philippe Starck. The vibrant restaurant and bar area are significant draws, fostering a lively social scene. The hotel's comfortable beds, fantastic breakfast, and the consistently friendly and helpful staff are also recurrent highlights in guest feedback. A popular rooftop bar and terrace further enhance the guest experience, especially during warmer months.
Room Quality
The hotel offers "spacious" and "super clean" rooms with a "fun design" and "cute decor." Guests frequently praise the "very comfortable" beds and the "bright and clean" bathrooms, which feature good water pressure. Each of the 170 individually decorated rooms is equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, flat-screen TVs (often iMacs that double as entertainment centers), refrigerators, and microwaves. Some rooms even include kitchenettes, a convenient feature for longer stays. Mama Skin organic amenities are also provided. However, some guests have noted that the "moody lighting" can make rooms quite dark, and a lack of a kettle has been mentioned. While generally comfortable, some found the "standard rooms" to be "a bit narrow."
Dining Experience
The dining experience at Mama Shelter Paris East is a major highlight. The breakfast buffet is consistently described as "fantastic," "phenomenal," "amazing," "copious," and "generous," with staff ensuring it remains well-stocked. Breakfast is available for 21 EUR per adult and 10 EUR for children under 12. The on-site restaurant serves "delicious" and "homemade dishes" and is considered "excellent." It offers both lunch and dinner, and guests appreciate the vibrant island bar, often featuring a live DJ set, and the option to dine on the terrace. Pets are also welcome in the restaurant. Room service is not offered.
Service & Staff
The staff at Mama Shelter Paris East receive overwhelmingly positive reviews for their hospitality. Guests describe them as "very helpful," "friendly," "super friendly," "kind," and "welcoming." Staff members are known to go above and beyond, assisting guests with various needs, including helping to arrange transportation. The check-in and check-out processes are reported to be smooth and efficient.
Location & Accessibility
Situated in Paris's 20th arrondissement, Mama Shelter Paris East offers a location that is both "vibrant" and "hip." It's conveniently located near the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery, just a 4-minute walk away. The neighborhood is characterized as being "between old and new, industrial and artistic." While not in the immediate vicinity of the most tourist-heavy "postcard Paris" attractions, the hotel is well-connected by public transport. Buses are available right outside, and metro stations are within a few minutes' walk (approximately 10 minutes according to some reviews). Nearby attractions include the Atelier des Lumières and Parc de Belleville. The city center is approximately 2.5 miles away.
Value & Pricing
Mama Shelter Paris East is generally regarded as offering "great value for money" and being "reasonably priced" for Paris. Prices for a one-night stay for two adults can start from around $98, with the average nightly rate hovering around $161, and deals occasionally found for as low as $89. On-site parking is available for 25 EUR per day, though it cannot be reserved in advance due to limited availability.
Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include noise from the street, particularly in front-facing rooms on Saturday nights, which can be attributed to a nearby nightclub. Guests have noted that rooms are not fully soundproofed against street noise. The "moody lighting" in the rooms, while a design choice, can be perceived as too dark by some. Other minor complaints include shower screens being too short, leading to water splashing in the bathroom, and the absence of a kettle in the rooms. One recent review also mentioned an instance of "unjustified debits" after departure and perceived "unprofessional" or overly familiar staff.

Stayed here for few nights in Jan. Good location and 45 mins from Airport in the afternoon. The restaurant in the ground floor is nice, but always crowded in the evening. Food is good but too long wait. The place has some sort of a dark theme, it's not well lit. The rooms feel dark and it would ve been nice to have option of having bright lights. No coffee/tea complementary packs in the room. At ...

After staying at the brand new Mama Shelter in Zurich, I have to say we were a little disappointed at the Paris east location. We had stayed here before many years ago and our memories served us as a good location. This time it seems very dark and dreary. The lobby was dark and the restaurant felt dark and gloomy too. It was decorated for Halloween, but I don't think that made a big difference...

The most comfortable beds and pillows I have had in France - the hotel is very cool with a big restaurant and bar although maybe more aimed at couples than family stays. I initially thought it was a bit far out, but I liked the area that had some lovely looking cafes. The metro was a 10 minute walk and on a well connected line so everything worked out well.

Warm welcome, great staff, super cool spaces and atmosphere, amazing breakfast (broad selection of all sorts of things, and they even have a centrifugal juicer!), nice neighborhood, well connected, great pizzeria and other shops and restaurants at 2 min. Easily recommend :)

I wouldn't stay here again. The Small Single Mama room I had was generously sized and well designed, and quiet, but the bathroom was somewhat sterile. They also seem to have their priorities mixed up a bit too; there are cartoon masks on the lamps, a separate sink in the room, and even a microwave, but no kettle, coffee making facilities or even a glass to have water. Bizarre!

I had a very disappointing experience with Mama Shelter Paris East due to an unfair change to my booking’s cancellation policy. On 10/29, I booked a room for 11/22–11/30. At the time of booking, the reservation was fully refundable, as clearly stated in the confirmation. On 11/1, I briefly modified the booking to 11/23–11/30. The booking remained fully refundable. Later that same day, I changed...
