Expert Review: Majaró Tulum
Majaró Tulum: A Comprehensive Review of this Michelin Key Selected Oasis
Majaró Tulum, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, presents itself as a luxurious and intimate retreat amidst the vibrant setting of Tulum, Mexico. While generally lauded for its design, tranquil atmosphere, and attentive service, guests note a few areas for improvement, particularly concerning its surrounding infrastructure and breakfast offerings.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Majaró Tulum generally receives a positive reception, often described as a "lovely hotel" and a "luxe little oasis". On Expedia, a significant number of guests (59 out of 103 reviews) rated their experience as "Excellent," contributing to a "Very Good" overall sentiment. However, on Booking.com, it holds a "Good" rating of 7.0 from 142 reviews, indicating a slightly more mixed experience among a larger sample of guests. The sentiment leans towards appreciation for its peaceful ambiance and aesthetic, despite some recurring criticisms.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise Majaró Tulum for several standout features:
- Design & Atmosphere: The hotel boasts a "cleaned-up modern boho-chic" design, with clean-lined exteriors softened by abundant greenery. It's celebrated as a tranquil and private 12-room oasis.
- Amenities: The property features a small but beautiful swimming pool with distinctive striped tiles. Approximately half of the units offer the luxury of a private plunge pool. Majaró Tulum also includes a spa, a restaurant, a rooftop terrace with views, and a swim-up bar. Free Wi-Fi and free on-site parking are also available.
- Privacy & Quiet: Its location in a residential neighborhood contributes to a sense of quiet and privacy, appealing to those seeking an escape from the busier parts of Tulum.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Majaró Tulum are designed with comfort and modern aesthetics in mind. They feature a modern boho-chic style and are well-equipped. Guests report spacious rooms with exceptionally comfortable beds, including memory foam options. High-luxury amenities include 400+ thread count bedding, Cyprès bathroom products, bathrobes, a safe, Nespresso machine, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a minibar (at an additional cost), a hair dryer, and LCD TVs with premium channels. A significant draw is that 8 out of the 12 rooms come with a private pool.
4. Dining Experience
Majaró Tulum features a restaurant that offers "inventive twists on local favorites." A continental breakfast with juice and fruits is provided daily. However, the breakfast experience appears to be a point of contention for some guests. Several reviews mention the breakfast as being "almost non existent" or limited to "2 toasts with jam and a coffee," leading some to seek breakfast at nearby cafes. The property has acknowledged this feedback, stating they are reviewing their breakfast menu to offer more variety.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Majaró Tulum generally receives high praise for their friendliness, professionalism, and helpfulness. One guest specifically highlighted "Veronica" for her excellent communication and assistance with restaurant recommendations, beach club bookings, and transportation arrangements, contributing significantly to a positive stay. The hotel also offers concierge services, available from reservation through arrival, to assist with various bookings and additional services like private transportation, car rentals, and in-hotel private dining.
6. Location & Accessibility
Majaró Tulum is situated in Fraccionamiento La Veleta, a residential neighborhood just south of Tulum's city center. This location offers a quieter and more private setting than the bustling downtown or beachfront resort zones. It is approximately a 10-15 minute drive from both the beach and Tulum center. Nearby attractions include the Tulum Archaeological Site (6 km/3.7 miles away) and Tulum National Park (3.7 km/2.3 miles away). The hotel provides convenient services such as airport transfers and bicycle rentals.
However, a frequently cited complaint is the condition of the roads leading to the property, described as "terrible" and lacking street lighting. Guests also note that Tulum is an area undergoing rapid development, which can result in construction noise and occasional power outages.
7. Value & Pricing
While specific price ranges are not explicitly detailed in all reviews, some guests have noted that they received "good value for the price" at Majaró Tulum. The luxury amenities, private plunge pools in many rooms, and the overall boutique experience contribute to its perceived value. Deposit and pet fees are applicable, with a pet deposit of MXN 400 per stay and a pet fee of MXN 400 per pet, per stay.
8. Common Complaints
Despite its many positive attributes, Majaró Tulum faces some recurring criticisms:
- Infrastructure Issues: The most prominent complaint is the poor condition of local roads, particularly in the La Veleta neighborhood, which can be unpaved and lack street lighting, making access challenging, especially at night.
- Breakfast Quality: The complimentary breakfast has been a source of disappointment for some guests, who found it to be very basic or insufficient.
- Inconsistent Service/Amenities: A few guests reported issues such as receiving a room different from their booking, dirty plunge pools, lack of regular housekeeping services (requiring requests for fresh towels), no hot water for periods, and limited in-room coffee or drinking water.
- Development-Related Disturbances: Due to Tulum's ongoing growth, guests may experience construction noise and occasional power outages.

Interesting hotel, large bedroom and bathroom. Kitchenette but poorly equipped. Outdoor shower and jacuzzi but latter is outside/uncovered so lots of bits inside water. Hotel has a natural look with reed fencing and greenery. No reception desk but clear check in/our instructions provided in advance. Hotel is on a rough potholed road but the area appears to be developing but not complete. Not too ...

Honestly, the place was great. A few things could have been better maintained and there were no staff around, but I actually preferred that. It was nice not being bothered every time I went to my room or went to the pool, so it really suited me. I would definitely come back. Thanks.

This is a nice and quiet hotel. It’s is very relaxed and flexible. I think we were the only guests this weekend. It was hard to locate at first because there are a lot of hotels in the one area. The setup and rooms were nice. The beds were comfortable. There aren’t many accommodations. Any issues we had, the staff were more than willing to assist. They offer breakfast from 8-11am and are cooked on...

I can't say enough great things about our stay! Majaro was excellent in making our planning as easy as possible for our large group trip. From the start, they recommended excursions, restaurants, and beach clubs. We ended up booking a cenote tour and Majaro handled all the details, it was perfect. They also coordinated the full group's airport transfer, even though we only requested it the day we...

Incredible set up, my room had a private pool and was extremely comfortable. They left us delicious treats for our Cenote tour which was a nice touch, there was a cafe and store across the road which can fulfill all day to day needs. Highly recommend the short walk to Fitalicious which was 10/10. Staff were very helpful when we somehow managed to lose a Titliest Ap1 8 iron and our young friend's t...

This was one of the most disappointing stays during our 2 week trip to Mexico! Details below: Horrible location - if you don’t rent a 4x4 car there is no chance you can get there as there roads are not paved and the holes are massive! Also, the rooms were not properly clean - we found some hair left in the shower area and used coffee cup on the terrace. We had a kitchen in our apartment and the c...
