Expert Review: Lizard Island Resort

Lizard Island Resort, a prestigious Michelin Key Three-Keys property, offers an unparalleled luxury escape on the Great Barrier Reef, blending exclusivity with a profound connection to nature. This all-inclusive resort is frequently lauded as one of the world's most outstanding hotel experiences.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Lizard Island Resort is overwhelmingly positive, with guests describing it as an exceptional and unforgettable destination. Many reviews highlight a sense of being completely secluded and immersed in the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef. The resort consistently receives high praise, with an impressive overall rating of 8.9 and numerous perfect "10 out of 10" scores from satisfied visitors.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are consistently captivated by several standout features:

  • Location: The resort's prime position directly on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, within a National Park, is its most significant draw. This allows for immediate access to incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities amidst vibrant coral gardens and marine life. The breathtaking aerial views during the transfer flight from Cairns also contribute to the magical arrival experience.
  • All-Inclusive Nature: The comprehensive all-inclusive package, covering meals, a wide selection of beverages (including wines, spirits, and beers), and the use of watersports equipment like motorized dinghies, stand-up paddleboards, and clear-view kayaks, is a major selling point.
  • Seclusion & Privacy: Despite having 40 villas and suites, the resort's location on a large island (over 1000 hectares, with the resort occupying only the westernmost tip) ensures a profound sense of privacy and tranquility. Guests appreciate the ability to explore remote beaches and enjoy solitude.
  • Activities: The abundance of activities centered around the reef, such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring private beaches with picnic hampers, is a consistent favorite.

3. Room Quality

Lizard Island Resort features 40 private villas and suites, designed to offer "barefoot luxury."

  • Design & Comfort: Rooms are generally described as comfortable, lovely, and light-filled, often featuring simple, mostly white decor that allows the vibrant ocean colors to stand out. Natural oak floors and ocean-inspired hues contribute to a laid-back coastal charm. Beds are consistently reported as incredibly comfortable.
  • Amenities: Each room includes a well-stocked complimentary minibar (with non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and snacks, which can be customized upon request), air conditioning, ceiling fans, and spacious balconies or patios with daybeds offering serene views. En-suite bathrooms typically feature walk-in showers and double sinks, though some reviews note them as being basic for the price point. Thoughtful touches like beach totes, striped towels, bug spray, and flashlights are provided.
  • Privacy Concerns: Some older reviews mention a lack of privacy in certain rooms, with windows opening onto common paths and insufficient sound isolation between accommodations.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Lizard Island Resort is generally highly praised, with "genuinely excellent" food often cited as being in the upper echelon of resort cuisine.

  • Salt Water Restaurant: The main restaurant, Salt Water, serves Modern Australian dishes with a seafood focus, and chefs pride themselves on creating custom daily menus based on fresh catches. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here, with panoramic views of Anchor Bay. Breakfast offers superb execution of staples like granola, eggs, pancakes, and avocado toast, along with excellent coffee.
  • Marlin Bar: A more casual venue, the Marlin Bar, is open to guests, staff, and visiting boaters, offering casual sunset cocktails and snacks.
  • Inclusions & Limitations: All meals, house drinks, and a selection of wine are included. However, some past guests noted limitations in wine choices and that cocktails were not always included in the all-inclusive rate. Room service is available for most of the day and is part of the all-inclusive rate. Private beachside dining experiences and picnic hampers for excursions are also offered.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service and staff is largely positive, highlighting their friendliness and eagerness to help.

  • Hospitality: Staff are often described as bright, cheerful, jovial, and sunkissed, contributing to a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. They are noted for carrying their care for the special place into their easy-going service.
  • Inexperience & Inconsistencies: Some past reviews, however, mention that the staff, often young, could appear less polished or experienced than expected for a high-standard property. There were instances where requests were forgotten, drink refills were slow, or there was a lack of clarity regarding inclusions.
  • Management Interaction: A past criticism noted the absence of a General Manager or other management figures greeting guests upon arrival or departure.

6. Location & Accessibility

Lizard Island is Australia's northernmost island resort, located 240km north of Cairns and 27km off the coast of Queensland.

  • Remote & Exclusive: The island is a private national park, offering extreme seclusion and direct access to the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Transport: Access is exclusively via a scenic hour-long private charter flight from Cairns. The flights typically operate twice or thrice daily. The cost of these return flights (approximately AUD 650-1000 per person) is an additional, unavoidable expense.
  • Connectivity: There is no mobile phone coverage on the island. Free Wi-Fi is available, primarily in the lodge and restaurant areas, and can sometimes be slow. Guests appreciate this forced disconnection, promoting relaxation and reconnection.
  • Neighborhood & Attractions: The resort is the only property on Lizard Island, which is part of Lizard Island National Park. Attractions include 24 pristine beaches, a topaz-hued lagoon, and hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints like Cook's Look. The main attraction is, of course, the unparalleled access to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling and diving.

7. Value & Pricing

Lizard Island Resort is an "uber luxury" property with a significant price point.

  • Price Range: Prices start from approximately AUD 1,800 per night, with regular rooms and suites ranging upwards, and larger options like The Pavilion and The Villa starting from AUD 5,000. The average price per room is around $1500 USD.
  • Worth the Cost? Many guests feel the all-inclusive nature, exceptional location, and unique experiences justify the high cost, considering it a "once-in-a-lifetime experience." However, some past reviews have questioned the value for money, especially when comparing it to other luxury properties globally. The mandatory and costly return flight from Cairns significantly adds to the overall expense.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Mosquitoes/Biting Midges: A persistent complaint, particularly in older reviews, concerns biting insects, especially around meal times and sunset. While bug spray is now provided in rooms, the resort's environmental policy prevents widespread spraying, leaving guests to manage the issue themselves.
  • Room Privacy (historical): As mentioned under room quality, some guests in the past experienced a lack of privacy due to room positioning and sound insulation.
  • Inconsistent Service Polish (historical): While generally friendly, some staff were perceived as inexperienced, leading to minor service inconsistencies.
  • Rigid Rules/Lack of Flexibility (historical): Some past guests felt the resort had too many rules regarding activities and dining, rather than a flexible "anything is possible" approach, which was not expected for a luxury property.
  • Wi-Fi and A/C Issues: While often forgivable due to the remote location, some guests have reported issues with Wi-Fi connectivity and air conditioning.

Paradise. One of the most incredible places we have visited in the world. The team did an amazing job for a milestone birthday/celebration trip for my wife and I. The whole island is just incredibly beautiful - snorkeling here was better than scuba we have done in most places around the world. We swam with multiple turtles, sharks, fish, rays etc just meters from shore. 5/5 for the dining here. ...

Incredible hotel with great service right on the Great Barrier Reef. The attention to detail at this resort is what makes it so special. You can snorkel right off of any of the beaches and the team will go out of their way to drop you off at just the right spots so you can really tailor each day. The food is wonderful and surprisingly varied considering you only have one restaurant (2 if you count...

What an experience! Everything about our Lizard Island trip was amazing from start to finish. Our transfers with Hinterland Aviation went smoothly and they provided a very professional service. The flight to Lizard Island was spectacular with views of the Great Barrier Reef the entire flight. On arrival at the Island we were warmly greated and had a wonderful host explain everything about the res...

We just arrived at Leisure Island Resort for our honeymoon — we got married three days ago — and we’re extremely disappointed. We tried to book a massage at the spa, only to be told that there are no available appointments at all during our entire four-night stay. This is absolutely unacceptable. If a hotel cannot manage the capacity of 40 rooms, it shouldn’t advertise itself as offering a spa, n...

Lizard island is a wonderful place to visit. It is still pretty much pristine and untouched by humans. The beaches are magnificent the snorkeling is amazing. The nation park has sign posted various walking trails so you can explore and find the best sites. There is a resort you can stay at but I believe it pricey, camping options are available and also day trips. I flew in with Dantree Air who wer...

Amazing spot to visit while sailing up the coast. Protected anchorage at Watson Bay (from 20 - 30 Kn SE wind and 1m SE swell). We picked up twp bags of plastic along 100m of beach on the southern side of the island. There were no signs to say which beaches we could sit on (some are for exclusive use of resort guests), but an abrupt resort staff member rudely told us to move on.
