Expert Review: Amangiri

Amangiri, nestled in the dramatic canyon country of Utah near Lake Powell, stands as a beacon of ultra-luxury, having recently earned a coveted Three Michelin Keys distinction in 2024. This exclusive resort is celebrated for its profound connection to the surrounding landscape, offering an unparalleled escape into the American Southwest.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Amangiri consistently garners an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, frequently described as "spectacular," "mindblowing," and even "the best hotel in America" by many guests and experts alike. Its Michelin Three Keys status signifies an "extraordinary stay," highlighting its exceptional quality and unique appeal. While the pricing is steep, the general consensus is that it offers a once-in-a-lifetime, transformative experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by Amangiri's seamless integration with its 600-to-900-acre desert surroundings. The resort's architecture, characterized by angular minimalism and polished concrete, appears to almost disappear into the rugged landscape. The service is frequently lauded as elegant, friendly, and exceptionally attentive, with staff often anticipating guest needs and remembering preferences. The iconic pool, built around a 165-million-year-old rock formation, is a centerpiece of the design. The expansive Aman Spa, featuring a water pavilion, Pilates studio, and outdoor treatment terraces, is another major draw. All meals (excluding alcohol) and a selection of activities are included in the stay, contributing significantly to the luxurious adventure experience.

3. Room Quality

Amangiri's 34 suites and a private four-bedroom home showcase modernist interiors that echo the desert's stark beauty. The design incorporates a neutral palette of greys and beiges, white-stone floors, concrete walls, and rough timber furnishings, creating a minimalist yet plush tactile sensation. Suites are spacious, offering comfort and privacy, with some featuring private plunge pools and rooftop terraces for stargazing. Rooms come equipped with stocked non-alcoholic minibars that are refilled upon request. However, some guests have noted issues with "pushed-together beds" rather than a single king-size mattress in some instances. The Camp Sarika by Amangiri offers high-end "glamping" tented pavilions, each with luxurious amenities including air conditioning, spacious bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, and private fire pits.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Amangiri is generally considered a strong point, with all meals included in the room rate. Breakfast and lunch, particularly, receive high praise for their quality and variety, with pancakes being a notable favorite. The resort's main dining room offers views of either the pool or the desert. While breakfast and lunch are consistently excellent, dinner in the main dining room has received mixed reviews, with some guests finding the menu limited and dishes (often prepared in a wood-fired oven) occasionally blackened or burnt. Conversely, the cuisine at the nearby Camp Sarika by Amangiri is frequently described as "absolutely fabulous."

5. Service & Staff

Amangiri is renowned for its exceptional service, with staff members often going "above and beyond" to create memorable experiences. Guests are often greeted personally upon arrival, and the staff's ability to recognize preferences without prompting is a hallmark of the Aman brand. However, some recent guest feedback indicates a slight decline in service quality, with reports of staff being less knowledgeable, longer waits for drinks, and less consistent room servicing compared to previous stays. Internal employee reviews sometimes describe a stressful work environment, high expectations from guests, and management issues that lead to a higher turnover rate.

6. Location & Accessibility

Amangiri boasts an incredibly secluded and breathtaking location in Canyon Point, Utah, situated on 600 to 900 acres of pristine desert. It's approximately 25-30 minutes from Page, Arizona, which serves as a gateway to numerous iconic natural attractions. The resort is strategically located within the "Grand Circle" region, offering easy access to five national parks, various national monuments, and the Navajo Nation Reservation. Nearby attractions include Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Bryce Canyon National Park. Complimentary transfers are provided from Page Airport.

7. Value & Pricing

Amangiri is an ultra-luxury property with a price tag to match. Room rates typically start from around $4,073 to $5,400 per night. While undeniably expensive, many guests consider the experience, the unique setting, the all-inclusive meals, and the range of activities to be worth the significant cost. It's noted that prices have substantially increased over the years, with some loyal guests finding themselves priced out. For those seeking exclusivity and an unparalleled connection with nature in ultimate comfort, Amangiri is often seen as a worthwhile splurge.

8. Common Complaints

Despite its luxury status, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Inconsistent Dinner Quality: While breakfast and lunch are highly rated, some guests have found dinners at the main restaurant to be mediocre, with a limited menu that doesn't change frequently.
  • Service Lapses: Recent reviews suggest occasional issues with staff knowledge regarding food and drink, slower service, and less frequent room tidying, which falls short of the expected ultra-luxury standard.
  • Room Configuration: Some guests have expressed disappointment over finding two beds pushed together instead of a true king-size mattress in their expensive suites.
  • Plunge Pool Maintenance: A few guests have reported that the private plunge pools in some suites do not circulate well, leading to bugs and rendering them less enjoyable.
  • Construction Noise: Ongoing construction of private residences has been a source of noise complaints from some guests.
  • Austerity of Design: While highly praised by many, the resort's stark, minimalist concrete design may not appeal to all guests, with some finding it too austere.

This was our second stay at Amangiri, our first being back in 2018. It was just as spectacular as I remembered it being. Our first stay was in May and we loved doing the via ferrata and getting the transcendental four hands massage at the spa. This time we stayed in December so it was too chilly for outdoor activities but the resort was sooooo cozy with all of the wood burning fireplaces crackling...

This is the best hotel I’ve stayed at in the United States. By a mile. The food is all top Michelin level…the fact that you can eat unlimited amounts makes you feel giddy in the most magical way. Very different experience compared to prior stays in the Sarika pavilions. I have joined friends during their stays in the pavilions four times previously and had nothing short of top-notch experiences. Friendly and respectful staff, quick service, and amazing amenities, but that took a 180 when I decided to book my own stay. We were in the pool suite, Mesa, I believe, and I was extremely underwhe...

Our family of four had the privilege of spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at Amangiri in a 2-BR pavilion at Camp Sarika. Under the leadership of Mario and Sergio, the staff seems to have tried to fix some of the down experiences certain guests have experienced. This is our little window on how things went by our eyes. Given the coverage on this place on YouTube, TV and other social media...

Stunning property. Very relaxed and the staff was great. The spa was wonderful. We also did a fantastic excursion to Lake Powell. The ride there was very comfortable and our boat captain was great. We had a great day with a nice lunch packed by the resort.

The many many bad reviews of this place are accurate. The food is so bad. We were given unripe fruit, under cooked breakfast potatoes, bland main dishes. Because the food is included, it reminds me of a tacky all inclusive resort where they try to pretend they have nice restaurants on property but it’s all just kind of poorly prepared, cheap food. The coffee and matcha are undrinkable. It tastes...
