Le Vieux Castillon: A Charming and Refined Provençal Escape (Michelin One Key)

Le Vieux Castillon, a Michelin One-Key property nestled in the medieval village of Castillon-du-Gard, offers guests a truly exceptional Provençal experience. This luxurious hotel consistently receives high praise for its enchanting ambiance, impeccable service, and stunning location, making it a beloved retreat for those seeking peace and elegance.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing their stay as "perfect" and "superb." The hotel scores highly across various metrics, including a 9.5 for location, 9.5 for cleanliness, 9.5 for comfort, and an impressive 9.6 for staff, out of a possible 10. Guests frequently express a desire to return, highlighting the hotel as "one of life's little luxuries" and a "fantastic place to stay."

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with the beautiful ambiance and architecture, which blends classic contemporary design with the historic stone walls of the village. The stunning, heated outdoor pool, surrounded by ancient stone walls, vineyards of Gard, and views of Mont Ventoux, is a major draw, offering a dreamy place to relax and sunbathe. The tranquil and peaceful environment, along with the attentive and friendly service, are consistently praised. The hotel also boasts a Clarins spa, adding to the luxurious amenities.

3. Room Quality

The hotel, spanning several buildings within the village, offers 34 rooms and suites, renovated between 2015 and 2017. Rooms are described as comfortable, well-appointed, and tastefully decorated with neutral tones and modern French chic design. They effortlessly blend contemporary design with the historical architecture of the medieval houses. Modern comforts include air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, soundproofing, Nespresso machines, minibars, and Bose sound systems. Bathrooms are often noted for their quality, with some featuring "his and hers" sinks and Clarins toiletries.

4. Dining Experience

Le Vieux Castillon features a more formal dining room, La Table du Castillon, which serves "gastronomic" meals with refined cuisine and regional accents. The restaurant's design is described as light, minimalist, and contemporary. Guests praise the delicious food, including the incredible and tasty breakfast spread, which offers high quality and variety, though it is not included in the room rate and costs extra (approximately EUR 27-32 for adults). There is also a sidewalk bistro in town, owned by the hotel, for a more casual dining option.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Le Vieux Castillon is frequently highlighted as impeccable, attentive, and never intrusive. Guests consistently describe the staff as welcoming, helpful, friendly, and considerate. Many feel that the people make the experience truly special. Valet parking service is also available and appreciated by guests.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel enjoys a "very pretty location" in the heart of the quiet, small medieval village of Castillon-du-Gard, offering gorgeous views overlooking Pont du Gard. The famous Pont du Gard is just 3.5 km away. The immediate surrounding area can be explored by bicycle or on foot, but renting a car is recommended for exploring further afield, with shops being a few kilometers away. Nîmes and Avignon are both about a 35-minute drive away, while Avignon TGV Train Station and Nîmes Train Station are also roughly 35 minutes by car. The hotel offers shuttle services to and from train stations and airports for a surcharge. A drop-off point is available at the hotel entrance, and secure parking is located 400 meters away, with valet service provided during specific hours.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific price ranges are not extensively detailed in the provided snippets, one review noted that the value for money was rated 8.7 out of 10. Given its Michelin One-Key status, luxurious amenities like a Clarins spa, heated pool, and gourmet dining, Le Vieux Castillon is considered a high-end property. Extra costs include breakfast (EUR 27-32 for adults) and valet parking (EUR 20 per night). Cribs and rollaway beds also incur additional charges.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One guest mentioned a lack of a safety rail for entering and leaving the pool, which could be a concern for those with mobility issues. Another review, though still positive overall, pointed out slight issues with WiFi in the bedrooms and that some equipment, like a phone or elevator, seemed outdated or low quality, suggesting that the overall experience sometimes didn't fully align with expectations for a hotel in this category. Additionally, the breakfast is noted as not being included in the room price. One guest also experienced less attentive staff at times, specifically regarding ordering drinks by the pool and valet service outside of specific hours.

This stunning hotel and Clarins spa is breathtaking. Located in the small medieval town of Castillon-du-Gard, the hotel has several buildings, a restaurant, Clarins spa, a pool, and magnificent views of the Gard and surrounding lands. The staff are exceptional and the spa is a wonder in itself. Spend a day with a facial and a massage and then let yourself explore the beauty of the hotel and town.

A very nice hotel. The rooms are large and clean and the pool is lovely. You can park near the church between the blue lines for free, or use the hotel's parking services for 15 euros.

A wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel, with amazing staff. We were very unlucky with the weather during our stay but the staff were so lovely and attentive, it really helped uplift our stay especially in the bar, they couldn’t do enough for you. The hotel itself is very well maintained, and feels super relaxing, I also had a treatment in the Clarins spa which was great. The town is very small and ...

One of the best hotel stays ever! The rooms were gorgeous while also maintaining the old chateau charm. The pool is immaculate with the best view! And it was the best food we’ve had during our whole trip in Provence. The price of this hotel makes it the best deal in all of Provence. Couldn’t recommend more and can’t wait to be back!!

Location It’s located in small lanes and very difficult to park your car. Reception Staff is nice but showing impatient while being asked question. Receptionist asked me why I am waiting for while I was waiting friends outside. It’s totally inappropriate question to ask customers why you are waiting here, very weird. Haven’t had any experience like this while stayed in 5-star hotel. While I asked...

Wonderful stay at the hotel! The facilities are beautiful and well maintained. The food at the restaurant and at Joio were delicious and creative. The surrounding areas are also picturesque. We felt relaxed and taken care of here. The staff, especially Salomee was helpful and attentive. Pipo was cute and the highlight of our trip. Would definitely love to visit again if we have the chance.
