Expert Review: L'Auberge Del Mar

L'Auberge Del Mar, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, offers a luxurious and casually elegant "home by the sea" experience in the heart of Del Mar Village, San Diego.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Guests consistently praise L'Auberge Del Mar for its upscale yet relaxed ambiance, often describing it as a classic, elegant hotel with a private coastal estate vibe. The general sentiment is highly positive, highlighting it as a top luxury beachfront property on the Southern California coastline, ideal for both romantic getaways and family vacations, welcoming even pets. It holds a Michelin One Key distinction, signifying its unique hospitality, distinctive character, warm welcome, and high level of service.

2. Key Highlights

The hotel's most celebrated features include its unparalleled location, direct access to Del Mar Beach via a private footpath, and breathtaking ocean views from many areas of the property. The serene and beautifully landscaped grounds, complete with outdoor seating areas and palm trees, contribute to its inviting atmosphere. Amenities such as a full-service spa (Spa L'Auberge, rated among the "Top 25 Spas in the US" by Condé Nast Traveler), a year-round heated pool with ocean views and cabanas, two lighted championship tennis courts, and a 24-hour fitness center are frequently appreciated. Complimentary services like beach valet (providing towels, chairs, umbrellas, and even toys for kids) and beach cruiser rentals are also significant guest favorites.

3. Room Quality

The 121 guest rooms and suites at L'Auberge Del Mar have undergone a $10 million renovation, completed in 2021, featuring a "coastal chic" decor with new wall coverings, flooring, and bedding. Many rooms offer private balconies or terraces with views of the ocean, Del Mar Village, or garden. In-room amenities often include a fireplace, plush beds with duvets, full marble bathrooms (though some rooms may not have tubs), 42-inch LCD flat-screen TVs, minibars, and complimentary Wi-Fi. While the updated decor is generally clean and fresh, some guests have noted a slightly more "bland" aesthetic compared to prior renovations. Rooms facing the parking lot or street can experience noise.

4. Dining Experience

L'Auberge Del Mar offers several dining options. Adelaide (formerly Kitchen 1540 and Coastline Restaurant) is the hotel's main restaurant, serving New American, farm-to-table cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the ocean. It is noted for its tasty and often surprisingly family-friendly upscale fare, with bold flavors and unique ingredients, and is an excellent spot to enjoy sunset views. The Living Room Bar provides a sophisticated social hub with a creative cocktail list, a daily happy hour, and live music on weekends. The Pool Bar offers breezy drinks and snacks poolside, and Lyric Coffee is a cozy café serving specialty coffee from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. While the on-site dining is generally good, some feedback suggests it can be a little "unremarkable" despite local ingredients, with guests sometimes recommending exploring nearby Del Mar Village restaurants.

5. Service & Staff

The service at L'Auberge Del Mar is consistently described as stellar, top-notch, and befitting a high-end resort. Guests frequently highlight the warm welcome and friendly, helpful staff who make visitors feel like part of the family. Personalized touches, such as complimentary Prosecco upon arrival and attentive porters, contribute to a luxurious experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts a prime location nestled between Del Mar Village and the Pacific Ocean. It offers easy walk-out access to Del Mar's pristine beach, shops, and a variety of local restaurants. The Del Mar Racetrack is within easy walking distance or a short shuttle ride away, making it a popular choice during racing season. Major San Diego attractions like the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, and Balboa Park are about a half-hour drive away. The hotel provides a free village shuttle within a two-mile radius and offers beach cruiser rentals for exploring the coastal area.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury Michelin Key Selected property, L'Auberge Del Mar is considered a worthwhile splurge, especially for those seeking an upscale beach getaway. Room rates vary, with average prices around $561 for a weeknight and $536 for a weekend night, though they can go as low as $358. The average room price is approximately $618, offering "exceptional value for money" compared to some other luxury hotels in San Diego. Guests should factor in a mandatory resort amenities fee, which is around $65.00 per evening (exclusive of taxes), covering amenities such as tennis courts, beach gear, and Wi-Fi. Valet parking is also an additional fee.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues mentioned by guests include:

  • Small Pool: The main pool is sometimes described as being on the smaller side, though it offers ocean views and padded loungers.
  • Room Views/Noise: Some rooms overlook the parking lot, which can result in less desirable views and potential street noise.
  • Wi-Fi Issues: There have been reports of spotty or slow Wi-Fi signals, despite it being covered by the resort fee.
  • Resort Fee & Valet Parking: The mandatory resort fee and charges for valet parking (often the only parking option) are sometimes a point of contention for guests.

This is a great location, and we’ve always wanted to stay here during our 15 years living in Del Mar! After moving to the East Coast and visiting family, we finally got to stay at our dream hotel. The ocean view from the hotel was fantastic. Thanksgiving brunch was quite pricey, but the food was excellent, and I was happy not to have to cook for the first time in 20 years. Unfortunately, our firs...

There are a few positive things about this stay: the location, the valet guys (who are funny, kind, and approachable), and the man who walked around the lobby in the evening, the pool, and the housekeeping. The rest was garbage: the food was over priced and awful. The hostess didn't want to seat us in an empty restaurant bc we didn't have a reservation and the waitress took our order and than neve...

L'Auberge has an amazing level of service. The night my wife and I checked in we stopped at the front desk to see if they had any headache medicine. The very friendly young lady said they sold it in the gift shop/coffee bar but that was closed for the day. In most hotels that would have been the end of a conversation. Here, instead she said "Wait a minute please," and she got the key to the g...

Absolute embarrassment. The valet service at this location is a joke and should be fired. After spending a good amount of money and having a fun evening, the valet had the audacity to attempt to extort its customers. We had an uber picking us up for $13, and the valet said: “no problem.. cancel it, we can take you home.” After cancelling our uber, the guy says: “no less than $50.” After showing hi...

Currently eating at the restaurant on Sinatra Sundays. The show is very good, the food is less than good. The waitress is very nice but it took forever to get our food and 3 of us got the scallops. They were undercooked and we would rate them as barely ok. The wine pours were very short and expensive so I would not recommend this restaurant!!
