Expert Review: La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca

La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca, a Michelin Key Two-Keys property, consistently garners praise for its enchanting setting, exceptional service, and authentic Mallorcan charm. While largely seen as a luxurious escape, some guests note areas for improvement, particularly concerning room modernity and value for money at peak prices.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for La Residencia is overwhelmingly positive, often described as "magical," "stunning," and "luxurious." Guests frequently express a desire to return, highlighting it as an unforgettable experience and one of the most beautiful properties they have ever stayed at. Many consider it an "extravagance that everyone should experience once in their lifetime." Despite the high praise, a few recent reviews suggest a mixed bag, with some guests feeling underwhelmed by certain aspects given the premium price point.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently adore the hotel's idyllic location, nestled in the Tramuntana mountains with breathtaking views of the village of Deià and the Mediterranean. The property's design, which evokes a traditional Mallorcan village with cobblestones and terraced gardens, is highly celebrated, offering a strong "sense of place" and history. The extensive art collection, including works by Miró, and the artist-in-residence sculpture studio are also significant highlights. Amenities such as two outdoor pools, an indoor pool, a full-service spa, tennis courts, and a free children's club are appreciated.

3. Room Quality

La Residencia offers 67 individually decorated rooms that exude luxury and comfort, featuring whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings, and sumptuous traditional Mallorquín furnishings. Many rooms boast stunning views, and some higher-end suites include private pools and terraces with panoramic vistas. Rooms often include spacious bathrooms with two independent sink areas, a shower, and a bathtub, along with quality toiletries. However, some guests have noted that the rooms can feel dated for the price, mentioning older Philips LCD TVs, visible wear like unpatched holes, old black mini-fridges, and wobbly antique wardrobes. The rustic feel, while intentional, may not align with everyone's taste for modern luxury.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at La Residencia is a major draw. Breakfast is frequently described as exceptional, with an extensive selection of buffet and à-la-carte options, including a popular Mallorcan corner.

  • El Olivo: This fine-dining restaurant, housed in a 500-year-old olive press, is considered one of the island's best. It offers a sensational tasting menu of phenomenal Mallorcan cuisine, utilizing locally sourced ingredients (some from the hotel's own garden), accompanied by an extensive wine list. Dining here, especially at sunset, is often cited as an unforgettable, romantic experience.
  • Café Miró: Provides a more casual setting with fresh seafood, locally-sourced meat dishes like black pork tenderloin, and delicious desserts.
  • Tramuntana Grill: Offers light bites, salads, grilled meats, market-fresh fish, and local produce for lunch and dinner by the pool.

5. Service & Staff

The staff and service at La Residencia are consistently highlighted as exceptional, attentive, friendly, and helpful, with many guests feeling "extremely special" and "like royalty." Staff are praised for going "well and above what they need to do" to ensure a great stay. However, some recent reviews have reported inconsistent service, describing it as sometimes mediocre or even "quite bad" (rude and/or inattentive), particularly around the pools which were sometimes left unattended.

6. Location & Accessibility

La Residencia is ideally situated in the Tramuntana mountains, overlooking the picturesque village of Deià and offering distant views of the Mediterranean. This location is excellent for those looking for a quiet stay and exploring the charming northwest towns of Deià, Valldemossa, and Sóller. The hotel is a 40-45 minute drive from Palma de Mallorca Airport, with private transfers often available. A shuttle service to Cala Deià is also provided. While guests can easily visit Palma, many choose not to leave the hotel's extensive grounds due to the plethora of activities and amenities available.

7. Value & Pricing

La Residencia is a luxury property with a corresponding high price point, with rooms ranging from approximately $664 to over $3,000 per night, particularly in peak season. Many guests find the experience "worth the money" for its enchanting atmosphere, exceptional service, and stunning location. However, some newer reviews question the value, citing that certain room elements feel dated or that the overall experience, while beautiful, might not fully justify the cost, especially when compared to other luxury hotels offering more modern amenities at a lower rate.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms include the perception that some rooms are "dated" with old TVs, unpatched holes, and wobbly furniture. Inconsistent air conditioning performance, especially during hotter months, has also been noted as an issue. Service, while generally excellent, has been reported as inconsistent at times, with specific mentions of unattended pool areas and inattentive staff. Some guests also found the food options for simpler lunches to be limited and pricey, with certain drinks (e.g., a mint lemonade for €24) deemed excessively expensive. A lack of heated bathroom floors was a minor "first-world problem" for one guest.

Our stay at La Residencia was absolutely unforgettable! From the moment we arrived early, the team made us feel so welcome, we were invited to enjoy the facilities, even playing a bit of tennis and relaxing by the pool, where we were instantly served refreshing vitamin C spritz and water. Our room was ready by a couple hours early, and the generous upgrade with postcard-perfect views was such a tr...

Simply magnificent. Visited to enjoy afternoon tea on the terrace. This hotel is magical - breathtaking views of the mountains, impeccable service, wonderful gardens, it simply oozes class and elegance. It’s as if you enter a different world. We did stay for 2 nights a few year ago to celebrate my birthday and have visited several times for afternoon tea- it’s one of best hotels we have been to.

While visiting Deià with my partner, we were eager to experience La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel. We also stopped by the bar, where the experience was truly exceptional thanks to the manager, Jorge. We started inside before he kindly found us a beautiful table on the terrace — the perfect setting. A special mention for the Old Fashioned, without question the best I’ve ever had in my life.

This amazing hotel is located in the even more amazing mountain village of Deia. High price range, but worth every penny. Stylish, sophisticated and just as romantic as a dream. The staff gets the highest marks. You feel very welcome.

My experience wasn’t so magical unfortunately. I booked is double bed room with Mountain View and they gave us 1 king bed with window facing another building with zero sun light and no site of the mountains or anything special. Man who checked us in called it an upgrade because room had two bathrooms. Also the room was located right next to a restaurant so loads of noise from staff cleaning up lau...
