Expert Review: La Nouvelle République

La Nouvelle République: A Michelin Key Selected Gem in Paris's Vibrant 11th Arrondissement

La Nouvelle République, a Michelin Key Selected property in Paris, consistently receives high praise for its charming atmosphere, exceptional service, and stylish design, offering guests a fresh and authentic Parisian experience. It's particularly lauded for its welcoming ambiance and its location in a dynamic, less tourist-heavy neighborhood.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for La Nouvelle République is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "excellent" or "wonderful." Reviews highlight a "charming hotel with very elegant vintage decor, very warm atmosphere!" and many guests feel "at home" during their stay. The hotel maintains a generally good reputation and is noted for providing an "exceptional place" to stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love several aspects of La Nouvelle République:

  • Service & Staff: The staff is frequently praised for being friendly, helpful, welcoming, and accommodating. Special mention was made of a staff member named Simon for providing an "excellent and very warm welcome."
  • Design: The hotel boasts an "elegant vintage decor," "tasteful decoration in a really nice vintage chic style," and "retro-inspired, earth-toned contemporary interiors." The lounge features inviting mid-century winged armchairs.
  • Location: Situated in the trendy 11th arrondissement, the hotel offers a "lively and varied neighborhood" that provides "the Paris of Parisians." It's known for being less touristy and close to Place de la République, with excellent public transport access.
  • Amenities: Guests appreciate free Wi-Fi, a peaceful terrace, a spa with a hammam/Turkish bath, steam room, and massage treatments. Other notable amenities include a bar, a restaurant, a thoughtful buffet breakfast, and complimentary 24/7 coffee and tea. The hotel also implements sustainability measures.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at La Nouvelle République are consistently described as "impeccable in terms of cleanliness, comfort and style." Guests find them comfortable, clean, quiet, and well-appointed, featuring effective air-conditioning and great showers. Even king rooms are considered "perfect" for a week-long stay. Thoughtful touches include triple-glazed windows, reading lights, tablets loaded with magazine titles, and complimentary loose tea in the bedroom. Photos of the rooms are generally representative of what guests experience.

4. Dining Experience

The breakfast at La Nouvelle République is a highlight for many, described as a "thoughtful buffet breakfast" with "lots of items to choose from and no shortage." Guests have called it "yummy" and a "perfect way to start the day." A continental breakfast is available for a surcharge, typically costing €12-15 per person. A significant bonus is the availability of free coffee and tea 24/7. While the hotel doesn't have a formal, permanent restaurant, it offers a space with a different resident chef every three months, which keeps the dining experience fresh.

5. Service & Staff

The hospitality at La Nouvelle République receives nearly universal acclaim. Guests frequently use terms like "friendly," "helpful," "accommodating," "warm," and "consistently top notch" to describe the staff. Several reviews specifically commend staff members like Simon, Samy, Amir, and Ryan for their outstanding service. Guests also note the staff's responsiveness to pre-arrival emails and calls.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location in the 11th arrondissement, specifically the Ménilmontant neighborhood, is highly appreciated for its "lively and varied" character and non-touristy vibe. It's conveniently situated about five minutes from the Place de la République, offering easy access to public transportation via metro stations, bus lines, and Vélib' self-service bicycles. This allows for convenient and economical exploration of Paris. The surrounding area is rich with cafes, restaurants, shops, and markets. Despite being central, the hotel's street is noted as quiet, providing a peaceful retreat. The Père-Lachaise cemetery is also a 15-minute walk away.

7. Value & Pricing

La Nouvelle République is consistently highlighted for offering "exceptional value for money." Reviewers note that the prices have remained proportionate to the high quality of the hotel's offerings, even though it's not a five-star palace hotel. An extra bed for a third guest, including breakfast, can be arranged for an additional €25 per night. Parking is also available for €25 per day.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Small Elevator: The elevator is frequently mentioned as being "tiny tiny," typically only accommodating two people or one person with luggage. However, guests often acknowledge this as a common reality in older Parisian buildings and not a significant deterrent. This might pose an issue for those with mobility challenges due to also having "windy stairs."
  • Street Aesthetics: One review mentioned the immediate street being "a little less attractive," although this was quickly dismissed as not being a problem due to the vibrant surrounding neighborhood.
  • TV Connectivity: An isolated complaint reported issues with connecting a Chromecast to the room's TV, with only regular channels working.
  • Potential for Noise from Protests: While the hotel's street is quiet, the wider Place de la République area can sometimes be noisy due to protests, though the impact on the hotel itself is generally minimal.
  • Isolated Cleanliness/Security Issue: One review mentioned an unclean room and a malfunctioning door lock that left the room open on two occasions, though this appears to be an uncommon experience given the overall feedback on cleanliness.

I stayed at Hotel La Nouvelle Republique last summer for three nights and it was a wonderful trip. Booking and check-in were very easy. I was upgraded to a room with a terrace, which was a wonderful surprise and was a great spot to start the morning and rest in the evening after exploring the city. Hotel staff were friendly and greeted us whenever we were in the lobby. The room was spacious and cl...

Great boutique hotel, felt quiet but likely due to time of year, good sized & clean rooms, hot drinks in lobby were a great perk for winter season - great location too within walking distance to many restaurants . Knocked a star off for service as was completely ignored by reception upon check-in who only acknowledged my partner, quite odd. Otherwise all other staff were friendly & helpful. Hammam ...

I found the room comfortable, and the management and service to be excellent. Coffee and tea are provided both the room and in the lobby (which is spacious and pleasant). There are lots of choices for restaurants and stores in the neighborhood and very good bus service on the adjoining streets. Even though my room faced the street, it was very quiet as well.

Stayed here with my partner in January (the best time to come to Paris-no tourists, tons of sales, very chill), and this hotel was perfect. Close to 2 different metro lines, VERY spacious rooms, and a lovely lobby/eating area to do work if needed. The staff was helpful and chill. Next to a street with TONS of restaurant/food options. Would definitely stay again and try the hammam next time.

Wonderful neighborhood for strolling, Asian food and stores, hipster bars, street markets and bakeries. Loved it! Room was stylish and had everything we needed. Friendly reception staff. Didn't try the breakfast. Bathroom small but functional. Great stay!
