Grand Hôtel La Cloche, Dijon: A Seamless Blend of History and Modern Luxury

The Grand Hôtel La Cloche, a Michelin Key Selected property in Dijon, consistently receives high praise for its exceptional location, sophisticated design, and dedicated service, making it a standout choice for travelers seeking a luxurious experience in Burgundy.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing their stays as "very good" to "excellent". The hotel is often recommended for its blend of historical charm and modern amenities, offering a truly memorable experience in Dijon. Review scores frequently highlight location and staff as particularly strong points.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of the Grand Hôtel La Cloche:

  • Location: Its prime position in the heart of Dijon, directly on Place Darcy, is a major draw, providing easy walking access to the city's main attractions, including museums, the Ducal Palace, and the historic center. It's also conveniently located just a 7-minute walk from the train station.
  • Design: The hotel, housed in a spectacular Belle Époque edifice dating back to the 1880s, surprises guests with its "modern chic" and contemporary interiors following a thorough renovation in 2016. This successful combination of antique volumes with modern artistic touches, including works by Richard Orlinski, creates a unique and elegant atmosphere.
  • Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as friendly, professional, helpful, and highly accommodating. Many guests appreciate the warm welcome and efficient service throughout their stay.
  • Amenities: The hotel offers a range of luxurious amenities, including a well-regarded spa (Spa by La Cloche) nestled in vaulted cellars, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a fitness center, and a beautiful landscaped inner courtyard or garden. Valet parking and a secure private underground parking facility are also highly valued by guests.

Room Quality

The 88 rooms and 5 suites are described as beautifully appointed, spacious, comfortable, and luxurious, ranging from classic to deluxe. They feature elegant decor that blends noble materials like walnut and granite with artistic touches inspired by Burgundy's heritage, including reproductions from the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts. Rooms facing Place Darcy offer pleasant views without significant street noise. Amenities often include bathrobes, slippers, and Nespresso machines. While the decor is generally appreciated, one guest noted an outdated wall-to-wall shag rug and a lumpy bed in their room. Some bathrooms feature a lovely design with glass partitions that can be curtained for privacy.

Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant, "Les Jardins by La Cloche," offers a bistronomic dining experience with Chef Aurélien Mauny focusing on Burgundy cuisine and local, seasonal products. The restaurant, which is recognized by the Michelin Guide and holds 2 Toques in Gault & Millau, provides a stunning atmosphere, particularly in the main room with a colorful painting by Françoise Nielly. Dinner experiences are often praised for lovely food, though some have found the service to be "somewhat average" or "unprofessional". The breakfast buffet, served in the same restaurant with beautiful natural light from large bay windows, is consistently highlighted as extensive, varied, delicious, and fresh, offering a variety of high-quality sweet and savory products, including regional specialties. The hotel also has a chic lounge bar that is popular with both guests and locals.

Service & Staff

The staff at Grand Hôtel La Cloche consistently receive high marks for their hospitality. Guests describe them as friendly, professional, and very accommodating. They are praised for their helpfulness and warmth, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience. Whether it's the welcome at check-in, assistance with luggage, or service in the restaurant and bar, the team generally leaves a strong positive impression.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a major asset, scoring 9.6 out of 10 for location in some reviews. Situated on Place Darcy, it's considered perfect for exploring Dijon on foot. Key attractions like the Ducal Palace and the historic center are just a short walk away. Accessibility is excellent, with Dijon Ville train station only 5 minutes away on foot, and tram stops (lines T1 & T2) directly in front of the hotel. For those traveling by car, easy access via the ring road or A31 is available, along with valet service and private secure parking.

Value & Pricing

The Grand Hôtel La Cloche is considered a luxury establishment, and its pricing reflects this. While the average room price of around $264 (compared to Dijon's average of $125) might seem like a splurge, many guests feel the exceptional amenities, impeccable service, and prime location make it a "worthwhile investment" and "good value for money". Some acknowledge the price is "a bit excessive" but still find the overall experience justifies the cost.

Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Restaurant Service: Some guests have found the service in the restaurant "Jardins by La Cloche" to be "somewhat average" or "unprofessional" at times.
  • Room Maintenance: One review mentioned that a specific room (No. 217) did not meet 5-star standards in terms of maintenance of elements, despite being impeccably clean. Another mentioned a lumpy bed and outdated carpet in their room.
  • Spa Size: One guest expressed a wish for more space in the spa.
  • Lack of English TV Channels: A guest noted the absence of English TV channels.
  • Minor Issues: Isolated complaints include bad-smelling toilets and some inedible room service products.

We have been staying here regularly for the +20 years as a perfect stop between London and Italy. Service is excellent from the moment you arrive and are greeted with a smile and warmth by the legend that is Adil (a pilar of this hotel!). Rooms are very comfortable (all categories). Breakfast is excellent with a vast assortment of everything you could want. Car park is secure and easily accessible...

I really appreciate the location of this hotel; from my room, I have a lovely view of Porte Guillaume and Place Percy. Since my family and I require two sets of bathrooms and toilets for our daily needs, I reserved two rooms, and the hotel staff kindly arranged adjoining rooms for us. The room design is smartly optimized, making efficient use of every space. Additionally, the door to the dressing ...

Lovely hotel, clean, comfortable, great location, and friendly staff. We paid €650 for one night, two rooms, three guests, which felt fair for the quality offered. What wasn’t fair was the spa experience. We booked the hotel back in early October for a stay in mid-December, mainly because of the spa. Nobody mentioned that reservations were required. By the time we tried, it was fully booked for ho...

This splendid hotel is everything you'd want for your French village experience. Perfect location to walk everywhere or take the tram. Well appointed, attractive modern rooms & artwork, juxtaposed with the historic building blends beautifully. We felt rescued when we entered the reception area, as the VRBO we planned on was filthy, very moldy and uninhabitable for us. It was my good fortune to ha...

The room layout was cramped. The toilet was separated from the bathroom and lacked a basin to wash my hands. No bidet either. The exhaust fan if it was working was inadequate. The shower was located in the bath and no screen. So the floor became wet and slippery. The climate control did not seem to work and we couldn’t sleep due to the heat. It was December so opening a window wasn’t practical. On...

First time in Dijon and loved this upscale hotel with great location. Easy walk from the train station and makes for a great entrance to the lovely Dijon. Staff was great and loved the bar with very good ambience. Our room overlooked the Darcy and was well appointed with king bed--would choose this again
