1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for La Maison Pavie is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "exceptional," "a beautiful gem," and "wonderful." Review scores are often at the highest end, with many guests giving it a 10/10 or similar excellent rating. The sentiment highlights a blend of historic elegance with modern comforts, creating a very special and restful experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of La Maison Pavie:
- Charming Atmosphere & Design: The hotel is celebrated for its enchanting ambiance, combining historic architectural details like half-timbered walls, exposed beams, and even a "pattes de lion" fireplace with contemporary furnishings and a hint of Indochinese decor. The decoration is described as magnificent and tasteful.
- Exceptional Service & Hospitality: The hosts, particularly Catherine and Ghislain, are frequently commended for their warm, welcoming, helpful, and accommodating nature.
- Superb Location: Its position directly opposite the Basilique Saint-Sauveur and in the heart of Dinan's old town is a major draw, offering easy access to attractions, restaurants, and a quiet charm.
- Outstanding Breakfast: The breakfast consistently receives high praise for its quality, local produce, homemade jams, traditional Breton galettes, and fresh pastries, served in a bright dining room overlooking a courtyard or in a romantic walled garden.
- Modern Comforts: Despite its historic setting, the property integrates modern amenities such as comfortable, back-friendly mattresses, sleek showers, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
3. Room Quality
La Maison Pavie features five individually decorated rooms, each inspired by a town visited by the explorer Auguste Pavie. The rooms are described as clean, well-decorated, comfortable, and spacious, offering a unique blend of historic character and contemporary design. They include flat-screen TVs and modern private bathrooms, some with walk-in showers or a bath and shower, often with Bang & Olufsen products. Some bathrooms feature an open-plan design, where sinks and showers are integrated into the room, with toilets tucked away. Guest feedback often highlights the "super comfortable" beds.
4. Dining Experience
The breakfast at La Maison Pavie is a particular highlight, consistently receiving "high praise" and described as "excellent" and "delicious." It features high-quality local and varied foodstuffs, including squeezed fruit juice, fresh bread, pastries, traditional Breton galettes, and homemade jams, some prepared by Sophie, one of the hosts. It is served in the shared dining room or the charming walled garden.
5. Service & Staff
The hospitality at La Maison Pavie is a cornerstone of its positive reviews. Guests frequently commend the owners, Catherine and Ghislain, for being "warm and welcoming," "helpful," "accommodating," and providing "outstanding hospitality." The staff is multilingual and contributes to a feeling of being at home.
6. Location & Accessibility
La Maison Pavie boasts an "ideal" and "perfect" location in the historic center of Dinan, situated directly opposite the Basilique Saint-Sauveur. This central position allows for easy walking access to the old town, its attractions, and numerous restaurants. While central Dinan can be tricky to navigate by car due to tight, one-way streets, free parking in a nearby covered car park (about 100 meters away) is included with each reservation, with a pass provided. The property is a 30-minute drive from Saint-Malo and Cancale. However, guests should be aware that the 15th-century building does not have a lift, and some rooms are accessed via steep, narrow staircases, which may pose accessibility challenges for some.
7. Value & Pricing
While specific "value" feedback isn't universally detailed, the high praise and repeat bookings suggest guests find the experience well worth the cost. Room rates vary depending on the period and room type. Examples include "Chambre Kampot" from €140 to €225 per night, "Chambre Champassack" from €147 to €236, "Chambre Vinh Long" from €171 to €275, "Chambre Angkor" from €190 to €306, and "Chambre Luang Prabang" from €195 to €313. These rates typically include breakfast and parking.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues are mentioned:
- Accessibility: The lack of a lift and the presence of steep, narrow stairs can be a challenge for guests with reduced mobility or heavy luggage.
- Noise: Some guests have mentioned issues with noise, though the property is generally described as calm and quiet despite its central location.
- Open-plan bathrooms: While stylish, the open-plan nature of some bathrooms, where showers and sinks are within the main room, might not appeal to everyone, though toilets are typically separated.
- No full-time reception: There isn't a 24-hour reception, so guests need to note specific check-in times.
- Children and Pets: The property does not accept pets, and children under 12 are generally not allowed.
- Car navigation: While parking is provided, navigating the narrow, one-way streets of central Dinan by car can be challenging.
- Construction: Some past reviews mentioned ongoing construction nearby, which might have contributed to noise issues.

Surely the best b&b in Dinan, but remember it has no evening meal facility. Our room was huge and modern overlooking the square with lovely bar and the basilica. It was very quiet all day and night. Continental breakfast is served by Ghislain who is the perfect host, attentive and helpful. There are many restaurants within walking distance and others a 5 minute drive away at Dinan Port. We lo...
