Expert Review: La Grée des Landes
La Grée des Landes, a Michelin One-Key property in Cournon, France, offers a unique eco-friendly retreat deeply rooted in the philosophy of Yves Rocher. Guests generally commend its tranquil setting, commitment to sustainability, and focus on well-being.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for La Grée des Landes is highly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a high-quality hotel, very relaxing place, and an incredible getaway. It is lauded for its harmonious blend of luxury and nature, promoting a "slow life" experience. Many appreciate its dedication to environmental responsibility, being the first 100% eco-designed hotel certified "Haute Qualité Environnementale" (HQE) and European Ecolabel certified.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love the hotel's eco-conscious design, including green roofs, solar panels, and organic gardens that supply its gourmet restaurant. The spa, featuring an indoor pool, hammam, and plant-based treatments using Yves Rocher products, is a significant draw, offering a space for relaxation and rejuvenation. The tranquil, natural surroundings with quiet gardens and beautiful views are consistently highlighted. Unique accommodations like the freestanding treehouse-like cabin are also a special feature. The hotel also actively supports the "Plant for the Planet" initiative, planting a tree for every night spent at the hotel.
3. Room Quality
The 29 guest rooms and suites are designed to be calm and quiet, featuring organic cotton bedding, natural materials, and oak flooring. Most rooms are on the ground level and open onto private patios or terraces, offering serene views of the surrounding moorland and 10-hectare grounds. However, some guests have noted that the rooms can be small. Recurring comments mention uncomfortable pillows and a lack of air conditioning, which can make rooms feel warm, especially in warmer weather. In-room Wi-Fi is intentionally limited or unavailable due to the hotel's "healthy policy" promoting disconnection, though private access points can be requested.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's organic gourmet restaurant, Les Jardins Sauvages, receives high praise for its excellent food quality and the use of organic, local, and seasonal ingredients, many sourced directly from the hotel's own garden. The restaurant has been recognized in the MICHELIN Guide France for its culinary excellence and awarded the Green MICHELIN Star for gastronomy and sustainability. Breakfast is consistently described as amazing and varied, though it is not included in the room price and some guests find it expensive (around 22 Euros per person). Guests strongly advise booking dinner reservations several weeks in advance, as availability can be limited.
5. Service & Staff
The staff is generally described as professional, welcoming, pleasant, and attentive, with many guests praising their accommodating nature. One particular waiter, Damien, was specifically mentioned for excellent service. However, there was a recorded instance of disappointment regarding a lack of flexibility and empathy from the hotel when dealing with a guest's travel delays and cancellations.
6. Location & Accessibility
La Grée des Landes is situated in Cournon, near the village of La Gacilly, in Brittany, on a forested hilltop amidst lush greenery. This secluded location offers a peaceful retreat away from city life, with breathtaking views of the countryside, ideal for nature walks and bike rides. The charming village of La Gacilly, known for the Yves Rocher Botanical Garden, is nearby, allowing guests to explore local culture. The hotel is approximately 100 kilometers from Nantes Atlantique Airport, accessible by car or taxi, with the journey offering scenic views. Parking is available on-site, including an EV charging station.
7. Value & Pricing
The hotel is considered a luxurious experience offering competitive pricing, with an average room rate of around $239, which is comparable to, or slightly above, the average price for a hotel room in La Gacilly ($226). This pricing is generally seen as providing good value for the quality of service and eco-friendly practices. However, some guests have found additional costs, such as the breakfast (around 22 euros) and wine by the glass (12 euros), to be on the higher side.
8. Common Complaints
While highly rated, some recurring issues and criticisms include:
- No in-room Wi-Fi: This is a deliberate policy for promoting digital detox, but it can be inconvenient for guests who need to work or stay connected.
- Room size: Some guests found the rooms to be small.
- Pillow comfort: Several reviews mentioned uncomfortable pillows.
- Lack of air conditioning: Rooms can become warm, particularly during warmer months, and noise from the ventilation system was noted.
- Spa facilities: The pool water was sometimes reported as a bit cold, and the spa facilities can get busy, leading to a lack of seating. Changing rooms at the spa were also noted as being too small.
- Restaurant booking: The gourmet restaurant often requires bookings several weeks in advance, which can be a disappointment for spontaneous dinner plans.
- Inflexibility in service: One guest reported a negative experience with a lack of flexibility from management regarding flight delays.
- Breakfast and wine pricing: While the quality is high, the cost of breakfast and some beverages were considered expensive by some guests.

We enjoyed our stay. The spa is surprisingly limited to a hammam and two pools. It's more about the treatments here which are excellent. Surrounded by nature and within walking distance of the village. The cuisine can be overly fussy but showcases local ingredients. The restaurant staff is professional and friendly.

The only poor experiance at the hotel, is the spa that spoiled our 20 hours stay with you. If you call yourself eco spa-hotel than the dpa should be a great experiance for your guests. We were treated 2 people in 1" claustrophobic cabin", and the music that was played was from jungle book or similar ,nothing relaXing about it,irritating, to say the less, the treatments were poor as well ,as if...

1. Rooms were very small, with no proper wardrobe, tiny TV, no minibar, no plug sockets near bed, shower curtain bit grimy 2. Price was 5* price, for a 3* service 3. 2 Irons in the entire hotel! 4. No spa treatments available to book on arrival, for a spa hotel!
