La Divine Comédie in Avignon, France, stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently lauded by guests as an exceptional and enchanting retreat within the historic city walls. It offers a luxurious and intimate experience, often described as a "magical slice of sanctuary" or an "oasis" of calm and beauty.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for La Divine Comédie is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "exceptional." It boasts high scores, including a 10/10 on one platform and an average of 19.8/20 based on verified stays on another. Reviewers consistently use superlatives like "absolutely perfect," "a gem," "breathtaking spaces," "out of a fairytale," and "exquisite" to describe their experiences.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by the hotel's stunning aesthetics and tranquil ambiance. The most frequently praised highlights include:

  • Design & Ambiance: The property is a beautifully decorated palazzo-style building, an "art house" where the owners' love for literature, art, and interior design is evident. It features eclectic and historically informed décor with a contemporary touch and rich colors, and its salons are filled with artworks, including historical images of Avignon.
  • Gardens: It boasts the largest private garden in Avignon, providing a serene and verdant oasis in the heart of the medieval city center. The gardens include a heated plunge pool and a jacuzzi, offering perfect spaces for relaxation.
  • Service: The personalized and attentive service from the "incredibly pleasant and helpful" staff and owners is a recurring theme in positive reviews.
  • Amenities: Beyond the gardens and pool, the hotel offers a small spa tucked away in a garden folly, featuring a hammam, sauna, and a treatment room for specialist massages.

3. Room Quality

La Divine Comédie is an intimate hotel comprised of just five unique suites, each offering a distinct character and narrative. These suites are described as luxurious, spacious (some around 538 sq ft/50 sq m), and a blend of modern comfort with vintage decadence. They are equipped with amenities such as flat-screen TVs with streaming services, mini-bars, tea and coffee makers, air conditioning, heating, and private bathrooms complete with baths or showers, hairdryers, bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries. Many suites also offer lovely garden views or terraces. While generally praised, one guest noted minor issues like "dings and marks in paint" and suggested plumper, softer pillows.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience primarily revolves around breakfast, which is consistently highlighted as "lovely," "amazing," "great," and a "fabulous breakfast feast." It typically includes pastries, fresh orange juice, boiled eggs, and fresh fruit. Guests can enjoy this refined meal in a charming salon, on the serene terrace, or in the indoor winter garden/orangery. The orangery can also be reserved for private dining events for groups of up to ten people. For lunch and dinner, guests generally explore Avignon's local culinary scene.

5. Service & Staff

The hospitality at La Divine Comédie receives exceptional praise. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "incredibly pleasant and helpful," "super friendly," and "extremely accommodating." The owners, Gilles and Amaury, are known for their warm welcome and ability to communicate in several languages, contributing to the personalized and convivial country-house atmosphere. Staff are also noted for providing excellent dining recommendations and ensuring guests have everything they need for a comfortable stay.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts a prime location in the heart of Avignon's medieval city center, offering a peaceful retreat while being just a short walk from key attractions. It is conveniently located steps from the Palais des Papes and approximately 500 meters from the Pont d'Avignon and Avignon City Hall, making most of the city easily accessible on foot. For those arriving by car, on-site parking is available for €20 per night, though guests are advised that Avignon's narrow streets make a small car preferable. Avignon also has a TGV station, and Marseille airport is an hour's drive away. It's important to note that, as an old building, the guesthouse does not have a lift and access to suites is via stairs, which may pose a challenge for wheelchair users.

7. Value & Pricing

La Divine Comédie is considered a luxury guesthouse, and its unique charm, exceptional service, and opulent setting generally justify its pricing for guests seeking an elevated experience. Room rates can start around $273, with prices varying depending on the day of the week; Fridays and Thursdays might offer better deals, while Sundays tend to be more expensive. Additional costs include a city tax of EUR 0.88 per person per night, and €50 per night for extra beds.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Maintenance: A few reviews mentioned "dings and marks in paint" and suggested improvements to pillow comfort.
  • Bar Availability: At least one guest noted that the bar was not always open.
  • Garden/Pool Maintenance: Suggestions for a bit more maintenance in the garden and updating the pool area were raised by one reviewer.
  • Accessibility: The lack of an elevator in the old building means it is not easily accessible for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues.
  • Check-in Time: Check-in is typically until 9 PM, requiring guests arriving later to contact the property in advance to make arrangements.

One of the nicest, if not the nicest, hotels we have ever stayed in. It's like living in a private mansion with a secret garden with just a few other guests. The staff, the decor, and the rooms are all incredible. All that and just 5 minutes from the center of everything. We are already planning our next visit.

Eclectic aesthetics! I love how secluded you could feel staying here yet 5 min walk away you can already reach the busy streets and the Pape’s palace. Service is good, room is clean, and I love the garden area and the beautiful landscape. If you expect the service that of a five star big hotel, it’s not here. But if you appreciate the 5-room only privacy and a good service that’s not intrusive, yo...

Stay in a palace/bed&breakfast, in a large and secluded garden in the center of Avignon. Within walking distance of all attractions, restaurants, and shops, the house boasts five elegant suites, each individually designed. A delicious and generous breakfast is served in the garden dining room in winter, and outdoors, poolside in summer. The staff is attentive but unobtrusive.

One of the most special places we have ever stayed!! It is so romantic and serene. A hidden surprise behind a huge door with gorgeous sprawling gardens, curious and romantic decorations, and kind staff. We stayed in the yellow room and had views of the pope’s castle and gardens. The room is huge with all the amenities. It was very quiet and a true delight to stay here. We wish we could live here!!...

One of the prettiest places we have ever stayed - loved how it was tucked away in Avignon behind a large door. Had no idea what we were talking into, and the gardens around it were just the beginning. It is beautifully landscaped and decorated with a romantic and whimsical touch. A true gem of a place that we will definitely come back to in the future. We stayed in the yellow room and loved the vi...

This is a long overdue review for a phenomenal stay at the Divine Comedy, but my phone recently served me up a number of photos that allowed me to imagine I was once again resting by the pool at the Divine Comedy, in what feels like a garden oasis, but is in fact right in the middle of Avignon. My wife and I stayed here this past summer during the Avignon theatre festival and we couldn’t have ask...
