1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Kodō Hotel generally receives excellent reviews, with guests frequently praising its aesthetic appeal and peaceful ambiance. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing it as a "getaway from the busyness of LA" and a "serene, modern hideaway." Hotels.com rates it as "Exceptional" with a 10/10 from one traveler, and Booking.com shows reviews largely between 8.0 and 9.0 out of 10.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love the hotel's distinctive Japanese-inspired design, which emphasizes tranquility and a connection to nature through monumental boulders and curated botanicals. Its prime location in the vibrant Arts District is another major highlight, placing guests within easy reach of cutting-edge galleries and acclaimed restaurants. The on-site Japanese restaurant and cafe are also significant draws, offering high-quality dining experiences. Amenities like complimentary premium bottled water, free Wi-Fi, and a 24-hour virtual concierge contribute to a comfortable and convenient stay.
3. Room Quality
The hotel's eight ryokan-style rooms are designed for rest and tranquility, featuring a neutral palette of white, beige, and gray with high wood-beamed ceilings. Each room includes a king futon-style bed, ash wood furniture crafted with traditional Japanese techniques, and an open shower with gravel flooring. In-room amenities typically include a smart TV, Bluetooth speaker, bathrobes, slippers, and Molton Brown bath products. Deluxe and Superior rooms may also offer tea and coffee-making kits and free minibars. Guests describe the rooms as "stylish, if spare" and "super quiet" with comfortable beds. Some appreciate the aesthetic of the open shower, noting it as a "spa-style serenity."
4. Dining Experience
Kodō Hotel boasts a celebrated Japanese restaurant that is also Michelin 2025 Recommended. The menu focuses on contemporary Japanese cuisine with a refined emphasis on premium wagyu steaks, seasonal fresh seafood, sushi, grilled meats, and handrolls, often cooked over binchotan charcoal. The restaurant offers both a la carte options and a 12-course omakase experience, with a serene dining room featuring concrete banquettes, exposed brick, and artfully draped textiles, as well as outdoor seating. Additionally, Kodō Cafe provides a Japanese twist on classic desserts, matcha-based drinks, teas, and offers complimentary morning pastries and hot drinks for hotel guests.
5. Service & Staff
The hotel primarily operates on a self-check-in model, where guests receive a secure link via text 48 hours before arrival to confirm details and get a digital room key for their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Despite this virtual approach, guests have reported positive interactions, praising the staff as "very nice and accommodating," and noting quick resolution of any issues via phone. A "24 Hour Virtual Concierge" is available for questions.
6. Location & Accessibility

8. Common Complaints
While highly regarded, some recurring issues have been noted by guests. The most frequently mentioned is the lack of elevators in the hotel, which can be problematic for guests with mobility issues or heavy luggage. The open shower design, without a door or full enclosure, was also highlighted by several guests as potentially awkward if traveling with a friend rather than a partner. Some guests have also experienced minor glitches with the entirely online check-in process. A desire for more in-room storage or shelves for unpacking has also been mentioned.

I had to stay at The Kodo Hotel in LA once for a last-minute trip, and I was absolutely stunned by how great it was—it’s easily one of the best hotels I have ever used. I realize now why it’s become so popular: the entire atmosphere is built around a calming, minimalist, Japanese-inspired design that creates an incredible sense of tranquility right in the middle of the city chaos. The whole hotel...

We had such a lovely stay here! Other than the amazing vibes, absolute highlight was the bed itself. It was so comfortable and we’ve been trying so hard to figure out the exact mattress. We emailed the hotel and haven’t heard back so please let us know the brand if anyone who works there sees this!

THIS HOTEL STEALS YOUR MONEY AND SPIES ON YOU! This was hands down the worst personal experience I have had at a hotel in my entire life. The staff were judgemental and made accusations without any evidence. I was spending an evening away with my husband and even without speaking with me, they withheld my security deposit of $250 despite no damage (or even mess) or any breach of their contract be...

The best hotel in LA. I frequently book short stays around the city to work with some new scenery and Kodo has quickly become the only place I go to. Convenient location with wonderful rooms that feel like an escape from the city. Staff and support are always pleasant and helpful, couldn’t recommend this place more.

The room was exactly how I imagined. The location is fine for people who want a quiet vacation and have been to LA before. If you want a more touristy vacation, this spot is a bit far from the fun but not impossible to drive to. There is no physical hotel concierge so you need to be comfortable with using your phone to get checked in.
Response from the owner
Thank you, Eunice, for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review! We’re so glad to hear that Room 6 (Iwa) lived up to your expectations and that the natural light and peaceful des...
