Expert Review: Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, Manchester: A Comprehensive Review

The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester consistently earns high praise for its blend of historic grandeur and modern luxury, making it a distinguished choice among the city's accommodations and a Michelin Key Selected property. Guests frequently highlight the exceptional service, stunning architecture, and prime location as key reasons for its widespread appeal.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "Fabulous" or "Excellent." It's highly recommended by many visitors who appreciate its unique character and luxurious feel. The hotel successfully combines style with substance, with a team dedicated to ensuring a memorable guest experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of the Kimpton Clocktower:

  • Design & Architecture: The hotel is housed within a magnificent Grade II listed Victorian building, originally the headquarters of the Refuge Assurance Company, with its striking clocktower being an iconic Manchester landmark. The interior boasts impressive features such as high ceilings, a grand lobby with a glass dome, ceramic tile work, stained glass, and carved wooden staircases, all meticulously restored.
  • Service: The staff are frequently described as fantastic, professional, friendly, helpful, and welcoming, contributing significantly to a personal and effortless stay.
  • Dining & Amenities: The on-site restaurant and bar, The Refuge by Volta, is a major draw, popular with both hotel guests and locals. The complimentary "Social Hour" with wine and beer for guests is also a much-loved amenity. The hotel also offers a good-sized fitness center and complimentary bike rentals.
  • Location: Its central position opposite Oxford Road Station and next to the Palace Theatre is highly convenient for exploring Manchester's attractions, including bars, eateries, galleries, and major entertainment venues.

3. Room Quality

The hotel's 260 guest rooms and 11 suites are generally spacious and stylish, featuring modern design elements within the historic building. They come equipped with premium beds, elegant bathrooms, and luxe toiletries. High ceilings are a common feature. Some rooms also offer unique touches like turntables with vinyl records, paying homage to Manchester's music scene. While basic rooms maintain an elegant charm, some guests have experienced minor issues in certain rooms, such as limited natural light due to smaller windows or less comfortable desk setups (e.g., a stool instead of a chair).

4. Dining Experience

The Refuge by Volta, the hotel's prominent restaurant and bar, is highly regarded. It's a vast 10,000 square-foot space divided into a Public Bar, Winter Garden, and Dining Room. Guests praise the quality of the food, with Sunday lunch being particularly highlighted as "excellent, if not the best" by some. Breakfast is generally well-received, offering a good buffet selection and cooked-to-order options. However, some guests have noted that certain cooked breakfast items might incur an additional supplement. The fact that locals frequent The Refuge is often cited as a testament to its quality.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests describe them as professional, friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The warm and "fluff-free" service style is appreciated, making stays feel personal and memorable. Reviewers frequently mention specific staff members who went above and beyond to assist them.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an excellent central location on Oxford Street, directly opposite Oxford Road train station. This makes it incredibly convenient for rail travelers and provides easy access to the city's vibrant attractions. It's just steps from the Palace Theatre and a short walk to popular areas like the Northern Quarter, Canal Street, and Piccadilly Station. Major venues such as the AO Arena, O2 Apollo, and both Manchester football stadiums (Old Trafford and Etihad) are also within easy reach. While situated on busy roads, double-glazing helps keep noise at bay.

7. Value & Pricing

While considered a luxury hotel, many guests have found the Kimpton Clocktower to offer excellent value, especially when booking during off-peak times or with promotions. Room rates can vary, but some guests have reported finding stays for around £92-£119 per night, which they considered a steal for the quality of the hotel. The inclusion of the complimentary "Social Hour" adds to the perceived value.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring minor criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Lighting and Furniture: Some older reviews mentioned that lighting in rooms could be insufficient, and some desk setups with stools instead of proper chairs were less comfortable.
  • Noise: While generally quiet for its central location, some guests on higher floors have reported hearing noise from nearby trains or trams. Noise from the internal atrium during events has also been mentioned.
  • Breakfast Supplements: There have been mentions of additional charges for certain cooked-to-order items during breakfast, even if breakfast was already paid for.
  • Check-in Deposit: One recent review noted a £50 down payment for hotel spend at check-in as an unwelcome surprise.
  • Small Baths: A few guests have found the baths in some rooms to be on the smaller side.

Had a great stay over valentines weekend. If I were staying again I’d request a room on the second floor or above as on the first we could hear the music from the bar downstairs. The staff were outstanding. Very friendly and couldn’t do enough to make our stay great. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

We chose Kimpton Clocktower Manchester for what was meant to be a special surprise stay, expecting a refined and well-managed experience. Unfortunately, it turned out to be disappointing. As hotel guests, we went to the restaurant simply for tea and coffee. We were first told it was fully booked. After explaining we were staying at the hotel, a supervisor then said the kitchen was closed. When we...

This beautiful building service as a great hotel, restaurant and bar. The people who work here are very polite and helpful. This hotel has a great ambiance, the old features of this building add to it's charms but they are also it's downfall, the rooms are unable to stay up to temperature and feel very chill in the winter period. Especially at night. The old layout of the room takes away it's prop...

We chose to stay in one of Kimpton's King Suites across the days of our wedding after previously having good experiences at the hotel. We were left disappointed by the service. My partner had pre-arranged for Prosecco in the room on arrival. This was left in the fridge without a note or ice bucket. We had to check with reception that this was indeed our pre-purchased bottle. On the other hand her ...

Fantastic stay at the Kimpton Clocktower hotel in Manchester. The building is absolutely stunning. The rainbow flag hanging above the entrance is a nice touch. I was offered some complimentary welcome drinks upon arrival. I do not drink but it was an extremely thoughtful gesture. Also, I was given a discount when I booked breakfast. Again, this was offered to me without asking. The gym is very wel...
