Expert Review: Keemala

Keemala, Phuket: A Luxurious Jungle Escape with a Michelin Two-Key Rating

Keemala in Phuket, a recipient of Michelin's prestigious Two-Key rating, consistently receives overwhelmingly positive reviews, lauded as an "out of this world" and "unforgettable" luxury rainforest retreat. Guests are often "blown away" by the unique experience it offers, blending nature, design, and wellness.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Keemala is exceptionally high, with guests frequently describing it as a truly unique and luxurious escape. It's often cited as one of the best luxury resorts in Phuket, offering a distinctive "glamorous camping" or "jungle-like" feeling that sets it apart from typical beach resorts. The resort aims to provide a new level of relaxation, rejuvenation, and connection with nature, emphasizing sustainability and eco-friendliness.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of Keemala:

  • Unique Design & Architecture: The imaginative design, inspired by four fictitious ancient Phuket clans, is a major draw. The villas, ranging from Clay Pool Cottages to Bird's Nest Pool Villas, are described as "mesmerizing" and "fanciful," seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings.
  • Nature & Serenity: Nestled high in the mountains and beneath a rainforest canopy, Keemala offers a tranquil, secluded oasis away from the bustling tourist areas of Phuket.
  • Wellness Focus: The resort places a high priority on guest health and offers a variety of wellness programs, including spa treatments, yoga, meditation, and traditional Thai therapies. The spa, recognized as the Best Luxury Hotel Spa in 2023, is particularly praised.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff are frequently highlighted for being exceptionally polite, courteous, helpful, and attentive, ensuring a genuine and comfortable experience.

3. Room Quality

Keemala offers 38 private pool villas across four categories, each with its own unique design reflecting the concept of ancient tribes: Clay Pool Cottages, Tent Pool Villas, Tree Pool Houses, and Bird's Nest Pool Villas.

  • Design & Comfort: Rooms are described as trendy, beautiful, and comfortable with unique décor, natural colors, shapes, and materials.
  • Amenities: All villas feature private pools, multimedia systems, seating areas, and terraces with views of the woodlands or sea. Complimentary soft drinks in the mini-bar are a welcome touch.
  • Bathrooms: Large, fantastically designed bathrooms are a recurring highlight, featuring enormous stone or oversized bathtubs, often with mosaic floors, and both indoor and outdoor showers that evoke a rainfall experience.
  • Specific Villa Types:
    • Bird's Nest Pool Villas: These are often considered the most luxurious, featuring a cocoon of woven wood design and beautiful sea views.
    • Treehouse Villas: Provide a unique, immersive stay with tent-like fabric and wooden skeletons, offering seclusion and jungle views.
    • Tent Pool Villas: Built from real tent material, they offer a unique experience and some guests enjoy the sound of rain inside.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Keemala is consistently praised as "utterly delicious" and a "standout experience."

  • Mala Restaurant: The main restaurant, Mala Restaurant, offers all-day dining with a mix of Thai, international, and Indian cuisines. The Indian meals, prepared by talented on-site chefs, often stand out, and the restaurant is accommodating to dietary requirements.
  • Breakfast: Breakfast is a "real treat," offering a curated buffet alongside à la carte options, including fresh fruits, pastries, eggs made to order, Asian specialties, and even prosecco. However, one reviewer found the breakfast area a little cramped and noisy, with a limited selection compared to other five-star resorts, though the quality was excellent.
  • Other Options: Mala Bar serves tapas and lighter meals, and the Cha-La Pool Bar offers refreshing drinks by the main communal pool. Destination dining, including private candlelit pods, is also available.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Keemala is consistently described as "fantastic," "exceptionally polite, courteous, and helpful." Guests appreciate the genuine care and attentiveness of the staff, from seamless check-in processes to personalized assistance.

6. Location & Accessibility

Keemala is nestled high in the mountains, offering a rainforest retreat feel, yet it's conveniently located near Kamala Beach (approximately 1.2 miles away) and provides a complimentary shuttle service to the beach. While offering seclusion, it's not far from the liveliness of Patong Beach (a 30-minute drive) and Phuket FantaSea (a 5-minute drive). Phuket International Airport is about a 45-60 minute drive away. The resort itself is on a hillside, and a free buggy system is available to transport guests around the property.

7. Value & Pricing

Keemala is considered an ultra-luxury property, and its pricing reflects this exclusivity. With an average price of around $684 per room, it is significantly higher than the average hotel room in Phuket. Prices can also fluctuate, with some rooms booked for $1,501 to $1,904 in recent weeks on certain days. Despite the higher cost, many guests feel the exceptional value, unique experience, and top-tier luxury make it well worth the investment. Deals for longer stays and romantic packages are sometimes available. Keemala generally appeals to honeymooners, couples, and those seeking a tranquil, adult-only environment, as it has a "no kids under 14" policy. However, some sources state that children between 3 to 11 can stay free of charge.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted:

  • Privacy in Certain Villas: Some guests observed that Bird's Nest Villas, despite being the most expensive, can feel less secluded than Treehouse Villas due to pathways running alongside their private pool areas.
  • Sunlight on Pools: As the resort is perched on a hill beneath the forest canopy and faces northwest, some parts of the resort, particularly the Clay Pool Cottages which are deeper in the tree canopy, may not receive much direct sunlight in the afternoon, potentially leaving pools cooler.
  • Wildlife Presence: Being located on the edge of a rainforest, guests may encounter small and harmless wildlife like geckos, and mosquitoes can be a concern during the rainy season (May to October).
  • Breakfast Area: One reviewer found the breakfast area a little cramped and noisy, with a somewhat limited selection, although the quality remained excellent.
  • Service Expectation vs. Reality (Isolated Incident): In one instance, a guest felt the service was only 3-star for the price paid, with staff members reportedly asking for tips, which is generally not expected at a 5-star resort.

We chose Keemala for our honeymoon and overall it was a truly beautiful and memorable experience. The villas are stunning, unique, and incredibly well designed — perfect for a special occasion like a honeymoon. The food, especially at Mala Restaurant, was outstanding. Every meal was delicious and beautifully presented, and the atmosphere throughout the resort felt peaceful and luxurious. Unfortu...

We really loved our stay here. The staff was really amazing, caring and attentive to every single detail. Our host was Melon. He took care of us for every single request and he even anticipated them. We enjoyed many activities within Keemala, the garden tour with Tan was really the best one, we saw a rubber tree, all the herbs and the mushroom room. The cocktail class was a little bit too fast but...

If you want to relax far away from any nightlife this is the place to stay. Mai greeted us when we arrived and stayed in contact during the days of our stay with valuable support and recommendations. The only small downside was that none of the rooms had an umbrella on the terrace for some shade wich made them kind of useless in the direct sun. But everything else was great to have a relaxing time...

Wonderful room, warm attentive service and breakfast. The only negative is that the shuttle is only available a few times a day and not during when I would want it the most (like late afternoon, evening). Being where the resort is you would have to rely on car share services a lot unless you want to walk 20 minutes up and down steep hills

We stayed at Keemala in Phuket and it was a truly unique experience. The resort is set on a hillside surrounded by lush forest, giving it a very peaceful and private atmosphere. The villas are beautifully designed, blending natural materials with modern comfort, and each one feels like its own little sanctuary. Our villa had a private pool, which was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view. Th...

We absolutely loved this property. The design of this hotel is truly one of a kind — the level of detail and thought put into each guest room, the common areas, and the landscaping is absolutely jaw-dropping. Every corner feels intentional, luxurious, and beautifully curated. On top of that, the staff is exceptional: incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely eager to ensure you have the perfe...
