Expert Review: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, nestled deep within the Peruvian Amazon near Puerto Maldonado, stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property offering an immersive and comfortable jungle experience. It is recognized for its commitment to sustainability and authentic hospitality.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful," "amazing," and "excellent." The lodge scores highly for staff (9.5), location (9.3), and cleanliness (9.2) on Booking.com. While lauded for its unique setting and well-organized excursions, some guests note discrepancies in the "all-inclusive" experience and occasional service shortcomings from management.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise the lodge for its deep jungle immersion, allowing for abundant wildlife viewing opportunities right around the property. A major highlight is the array of well-planned and enjoyable excursions led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides. These guided tours, often included in the package, are a significant draw, featuring activities like boat trips on the Madre de Dios River, visits to Lake Sandoval, and bird watching at the canopy tower. The property itself, built with local materials and featuring a central Casa Grande and private cabanas, is appreciated for its beautiful, well-maintained grounds and rustic charm.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations, which include 25 private cabanas and five rooms in the main lodge, offer rustic comfort designed to blend with the natural surroundings. Rooms are generally described as clean, spacious, and comfortable, featuring dark wood floors and furniture. Each includes a private bathroom with free toiletries and views of the forest or an oxbow lake. Guests appreciate the presence of hot water and ceiling fans in the rooms. However, some guests have mentioned the absence of air conditioning, and a few reviews cited strong smells like sewage or cat urine in certain rooms. Despite being in the jungle, some guests were surprised by the lack of mosquitoes in the cabanas.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience receives mixed but generally positive reviews. Many guests find the food "amazing" and "excellent," highlighting the use of local ingredients and authentic, well-prepared dishes. Special dietary requirements, such as vegetarian meals, are often accommodated. Breakfast is typically described as simple, healthy, and sufficient, while lunch and dinner are à la carte. However, some recurring criticisms include small portion sizes at lunch and dinner with no option for seconds, a lack of variety with menus repeating frequently, and slow service between courses. Some guests also noted a lack of readily available snacks or fruit between meals.

5. Service & Staff

The staff are largely commended for being incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful. In particular, the excursion guides receive high praise for their extensive knowledge, enthusiasm, and ability to spot wildlife, making the tours memorable. Restaurant staff are also frequently mentioned positively. However, several reviews point to challenges with management, describing them as inflexible, unaccommodating, and sometimes defensive. Some guests also reported confusion and lack of training among reception staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción boasts a privileged and truly immersive location along the Madre de Dios River, deep within Peru's southern Amazon. It is situated within an 819-hectare private ecological reserve, acting as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Reserve and the river. The lodge is remote yet accessible, reachable by a scenic 25-minute canoe ride downriver from Puerto Maldonado, which is itself a 25-minute flight from Cusco. The hotel provides a complimentary airport shuttle service to and from Padre Aldamiz International Airport, followed by the boat transfer. The location is ideal for wildlife viewing, with guests often seeing monkeys and various birds around the lodge.

7. Value & Pricing

While offering a "luxury with a jungle vibe" experience, the value and pricing can be a point of contention for some guests. The typical price for a room can range from approximately $369 to $434 per night. While excursions are generally included in the stay, some guests felt that the "all-inclusive" advertising was misleading, as additional expenses, such as extra water bottles or certain specialized excursions, incurred significant extra charges. This led to some feeling that the overall value did not always match the high price.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms include the perception that the "all-inclusive" package is not as comprehensive as advertised, with guests having to pay extra for items like additional water bottles, even during meals and excursions. Food-related complaints often center around small portion sizes, lack of variety with repetitive menus, and slow service during meals. Some guests have expressed dissatisfaction with the inflexibility and unaccommodating nature of the management and some untrained reception staff. The absence of air conditioning is also a factor for some, and a few isolated incidents mention unpleasant room odors.

I stayed 3 nights full board at Inkaterra and have to say everything was first class. The food was simply amazing, the staff very helpful and attentive, the bungalow really cool. I used DEET all the time but I never saw a mosquito in my bungalow and didn't get bitten once. Our tour guide Rene was excellent and each tour was a fantastic, informative experience. Falling asleep with all the sounds of...

Amazing stay with beautiful lodges (I stayed in the main room) and fantastic wildlife viewings during the excursion! You seem to be assigned one guide throughout your stay. We were assigned Fabio who had a very good eye with wildlife spotting. We managed to see sloths (twice), capybaras, caiman, different types of monkeys, tarantulas, bats, which surpassed our expectations! I visited in January an...

Such a great environment. Tranquil. Quiet. Cabanas on the jungle. Privacy. Wild life all around. Birds. Snakes. Spiders. Monkeys. So many cool things. Great tours. Your days are packed. From the canopy walk to river paddles, you’re always moving, always exploring. The only negative was the lack of food. They say all inclusive but it can but up to 7-8 hours between meals and no snacks. Coffee iso...

This place totally blew us away! Everything was super well-organized, and the staff really went above and beyond to make things easy and smooth from start to finish. We were deciding between Concepción and Amazonia Refugio, and picked this lodge because we wanted something that felt closer to nature—and it absolutely delivered. The nature walks are right on the property, and sleeping in the open-...

Amazing all- inclusive jungle experience. Our family had a cohort of others to eat dinners with and do activities in the jungle. Every day there were 2-3 options of things to do, (helpful since they turn off the generators for those hours). The cabanas were screened in, very comfortable.

We had an amazing time at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. The rooms/cabanas were very clean and had everything we needed. With the screened in walls you feel like you're sleeping in the rainforest. The food (which is included) was very fresh and delicious. We appreciated that everything was organized and taken care of for us. Would highly recommend!
