Expert Review: Arennas Máncora

Arennas Máncora, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a luxurious and tranquil beachfront escape in Northern Peru. While guests generally praise its stunning location and serene ambiance, some aspects of service and dining draw mixed feedback.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Arennas Máncora is broadly perceived as a beautiful 5-star beachfront hotel, lauded for its picturesque setting and serene atmosphere. As a Michelin Key Selected property, it is recognized for offering a "very special stay" with high comfort and distinct personality. The general sentiment leans positive, with many guests finding it a "blissed-out break" and appreciating the overall luxurious experience. However, recurring criticisms concerning service consistency, particularly at the front desk, and aspects of the dining experience temper the praise.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several standout features:

  • Design & Aesthetics: The hotel boasts a soothing modernist aesthetic, characterized by natural materials and neutral tones, evoking a feel reminiscent of upscale Thai beach resorts. Its stylish boutique design includes a beautiful palm garden and a general "Polynesian island living" vibe.
  • Location: Situated directly on the private Las Pocitas beach, it provides stunning ocean views and direct access to quiet, well-maintained sandy shores.
  • Amenities: The property offers a range of facilities including an outdoor pool, a jacuzzi, a stylish poolside bar, and a full-service spa where massages can be booked. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas, along with bike rentals and tour assistance.
  • Vibe: With only 22 units, the resort maintains an intimate atmosphere, ensuring it "never feels busy" and fosters a truly relaxed and peaceful environment.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Arennas Máncora are described as spacious bungalows and suites. Rooms feature comfortable beds with quality linens, and many offer impressive ocean or garden views, some even boasting large verandas with loungers. While the interior design is often noted as fairly simple, the captivating outside views are considered the primary draw. Bathrooms are generally sizable, with some even offering glass-paneled showers providing ocean vistas. Standard room amenities include flat-screen cable TV, air conditioning, a fan, a minibar, and a private bathroom with free toiletries and a hairdryer. However, some guests have reported issues with lumpy pillows and limited bottled water in rooms. Connectivity can also be an issue, with reports of patchy or absent Wi-Fi in some rooms.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant excels in utilizing fresh local seafood, offering a fusion of Peruvian and international cuisine with dishes like sesame-crusted tuna and anticuchero octopus. Breakfast is served as a buffet overlooking the ocean, including fresh juices, cheeses, meats, and pastries, with hot dishes available to order. Many guests specifically highlight the quality of breakfast. Despite these positives, some reviews indicate inconsistencies in food quality, describing meals as occasionally cold or lacking variety, with one guest advising against the Eggs Benedict. The restaurant also has a reputation for closing early, and room service incurs an additional charge. The hotel also offers special dining experiences like "Table for Two" romantic dinners and ceviche cooking classes.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service is generally positive for most staff members, with many guests praising the attentiveness, hospitality, and friendliness of the restaurant, bar, and cleaning personnel. Staff are often described as welcoming, helpful, and willing to go "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant stay. Specific individuals, such as a waiter named Garry, have received commendations. Nevertheless, a recurring complaint centers on the inconsistency of front desk service, with some guests finding reception staff less helpful or pleasant than other departments. There are also mentions of service operating at a "slow pace."

6. Location & Accessibility

Arennas Máncora is nestled on Las Pocitas Beach, offering a tranquil "off-grid" setting approximately ten minutes outside the main town of Máncora, providing quieter beaches. Accessibility can be challenging; reaching the hotel involves a 5-kilometer stretch of narrow, bumpy dirt road, which is not conducive to walking. The most common way to arrive is by flying into Talara (Cap. FAP Victor Montes Arias Airport), followed by a 1.5-hour drive that some describe as an "ordeal." The hotel does offer an airport shuttle service. While somewhat secluded, the hotel provides easy access to experiences such as whale watching, paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing, and diving with turtles. Nearby points of interest include Origenes Spa de Playa (a short walk), Kichic (200m), and Las Pocitas beach (1.7km).

7. Value & Pricing

Arennas Máncora is positioned as a luxury property, and its pricing is considered high compared to other accommodations in Máncora. Some guests express that the hotel might be "too expensive for what it provides." Prices vary significantly by season and room type, with average nightly rates ranging from approximately $144 to $548. August is typically the cheapest month, seeing an average 33% price drop, while December is the most expensive with a 41% rise. Recent rates observed are in the range of $246.4 to $319 per night. The inclusion of free breakfast is a positive aspect of the value offering.

8. Common Complaints

Several recurring issues are noted in guest feedback:

  • Inconsistent Service: A frequent point of contention is the varying quality of service, particularly from the front desk staff, who are sometimes described as unhelpful or less friendly than other hotel personnel. The check-out process can also be "unnecessarily long-winded."
  • Food Quality & Dining Limitations: Beyond breakfast, the food quality in the main restaurant can be inconsistent, with some dishes being cold or lacking variety. The restaurant's early closing time and additional charges for room service are also points of criticism.
  • Road Accessibility: The 5-kilometer bumpy, unpaved road leading to the hotel is a significant drawback, making access difficult and unsuitable for walking.
  • Wi-Fi Issues: Guests report that Wi-Fi can be patchy even in public areas, and often unavailable in individual rooms.
  • Room Amenities: Minor complaints include lumpy pillows and a perceived meanness in limiting bottled water.
  • Limited Facilities: The gym is noted as being very small.
  • Beach Conditions: While beautiful, the ocean water near the hotel can be cold and strong, with rocks, which may limit swimming, though paddleboarding is an option.

Mixed feelings about this place. Service was ok, rooms were amazing and location as well. Can’t say the same about the restaurant food and SPA. The service was great and Piero was really nice and knowledgeable but the food was quite mid. Some dishes were good and others were straight bad. The massage was also mid. Not recommended. On top of that I got food poisoned, asked for a thermometer to ...

I cannot say enough good about my experience at Arennas. The property is beautiful, service is friendly and food and drinks are great. The plunge pool room is well worth the price and I highly recommend this resort and the oceanfront plunge pool rooms for anyone looking for a nice luxury experience around Mancora. Thank you so much to the staff at Arennas!

We had a great stay! Very friendly and attentive staff, good service and accommodating for special food / drink requests. Pleasantly surprised by little desserts brought to the room and appetizers to sample in the afternoon. Great spot on the beach, with plenty of activities at the hotel and in the area.
