1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hotel San Luis Obispo is overwhelmingly positive, with an impressive average rating of 9.2. Guests frequently describe their stays as wonderful, excellent, and a delightful surprise, often comparing it to a European boutique hotel. The hotel is considered a "good choice" where "everything is up to snuff" for a boutique establishment.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several aspects of Hotel San Luis Obispo. Its prime location in downtown San Luis Obispo, close to shops, restaurants, and local attractions, is a major draw. The beautiful and well-appointed design, which blends breezy beach and boho-chic ranch aesthetics with modern simplicity, is also a significant highlight. Outstanding service and friendly staff are frequently commended, along with the quality of the food in the on-site restaurants. Amenities such as the outdoor pool, spa, and rooftop terrace with a bocce court also contribute to the positive guest experience.
3. Room Quality
The 78 rooms and suites at Hotel San Luis Obispo are described as bright, spacious, clean, and stylish, with a playful, modern aesthetic. They feature white oak floors, colorful hand-made Nani Marquina rugs, and original artwork by Sara Frantz depicting iconic SLO sites. Rooms come with comfy beds, down comforters, deluxe linens, and light-filled bathrooms. Many rooms also offer floor-to-ceiling windows and a private sitting balcony or spacious terrace, allowing guests to enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Modern amenities, coffee, and snacks are also provided.
4. Dining Experience
Hotel San Luis Obispo boasts an excellent dining experience with multiple options overseen by Chef Ryan Fancher, who focuses on local ingredients.
- Ox + Anchor: This fine-dining steakhouse offers a modern take on classic steakhouse fare and receives Michelin mentions.
- Piadina: This restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine with a casual vibe, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch, including wood-fired Californian fare with an Italian accent. A children's menu is available.

6. Location & Accessibility

The property is also wheelchair accessible throughout, including accessible guest rooms, public washrooms, the spa, pool, and fitness center.
7. Value & Pricing
Hotel San Luis Obispo is considered an upscale hotel. While guests acknowledge that a great facility and location "come with a price" and can be a "splurge trip," many find it to be a worthwhile experience. The average room price is around $462, which is notably higher than the city's average of $207. However, this pricing is often seen as offering "unparalleled value for money" for those seeking luxury and comfort. Prices can vary, with Mondays and Wednesdays often being the cheapest days to stay, and Thursdays being the most expensive. As of late January 2026, a 1-night stay for two adults could start from approximately $341.1, excluding taxes and fees.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One guest reported that their room, located under the rooftop bar, was "extremely noisy until around midnight." Another mentioned that they wished the hotel was "a bit less expensive." From an operational perspective, some internal employee reviews have indicated that management can occasionally be "wishy-washy" on expectations, though overall, the workplace environment is seen as positive.

As a flight attendant, I stay in many hotels, and I always look forward to coming back to Hotel SLO. Just stayed one night again for the second time. I have a teenager who trains for US Naval Cadet program in SLO and since it's a good drive from where we live, we prefer to drive in the night before pick up. This hotel is clean, modern and well managed. The staff from the valet, the front desk to the restaurant are very courteous and professional. The hotel also provides free Tesla charging over...

Sleep quality was not good. The walls were such that we could hear people walking outside our room at all hours. We asked the front desk staff if they could do something about it two different times but they offered no solutions. It’s a really nice hotel. New, amazing pool and beautiful rooms. But at the end of the day, if you can’t sleep well, it’s not a great option.

Fantastic place! Clean and modern with cool vibe and excellent service. It’s our anniversary and we were upgraded to a corner suite. Lovely 2-room and 1.5 bath apartment with 2 patios. Great views. Excellent food and wine selections at the two adjoining restaurants (Piadina and Ox and Anchor). Live music in the evenings. What I loved about this trip is that everything was easy—we are right in down...

Great location and design, but cleanliness and pests are major issues The hotel is perfectly located in downtown SLO, and the modern aesthetic of the building and rooms is very appealing. However, I was disappointed by the lack of cleanliness. I found hair on the unused towels in my room, and the sofa seating in the restaurant had old food crumbs and hair on it. Additionally, guests should be cau...

The staff was the friendliest I've ever experienced ! And I've been flying 40 yrs.! The outdoor , heated pool/ hot tub were heavenly ❤️. Forgot to check out rooftop pop up , but am sure itvwas lovely. The location was so good , right I'm the middle of town , that I spent the day "pounding " the streets. Ton's of cute little shops, restaurants & the mission to explore. Highly recommend.
