Expert Review: Hotel Palazzo Murat

Hotel Palazzo Murat, a Michelin Key Selected property in Positano, Italy, consistently earns high praise from guests, establishing itself as a standout luxury destination on the Amalfi Coast.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Palazzo Murat is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an "oasis" in the heart of Positano. Guests frequently rate their experience as "wonderful" or "exceptional," with scores often reaching 9.4 or 9.5 out of 10. Many express a strong desire to return, highlighting it as the "best hotel" in Positano.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Hotel Palazzo Murat for several key features. Its superb central location within the pedestrian zone, yet offering a peaceful retreat, is a major draw. The hotel's historic elegance, housed in an 18th-century building, coupled with stunning landscaped gardens and a pristine pool, creates a captivating ambiance. The exceptional staff and service are frequently mentioned, as is the highly acclaimed on-site restaurant, Al Palazzo. The inclusion of a complimentary yacht cruise during summer months is also a noted highlight.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at Hotel Palazzo Murat are generally described as spacious, clean, and comfortable, featuring a blend of antique furnishings and modern updates. Most rooms offer a balcony and views of the sea, the hotel's lush garden, or the charming town of Positano. Amenities include air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi in public areas. Guests appreciate the luxurious touches like Frette Italian sheets, premium bedding, and a pillow menu. However, some guests note that while the grounds are opulent, room decor can appear "a tad bland" in comparison, and bathrooms can be on the smaller side.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Hotel Palazzo Murat is a significant highlight. The on-site Al Palazzo restaurant, set on a veranda surrounded by centuries-old citrus trees, serves exquisite local specialties. Many guests consider it among the best food they experienced in Positano. A "superb" and "excellent" breakfast buffet, featuring homemade pastries, is served every morning in the garden-view courtyard. Room service is also available for guests seeking private dining.

5. Service & Staff

The hotel's staff receives consistent five-star ratings for their exceptional hospitality. They are frequently described as "excellent," "wonderful," "professional," "accommodating," "friendly," and "attentive." Specific mentions include Leonardo, the Head Concierge, for his helpfulness and local knowledge, assisting guests with dinner recommendations and planning activities. Guests often feel welcomed and "at home" due to the staff's dedication.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Palazzo Murat boasts an "incredible" and "perfect" central location in Positano's pedestrian zone, approximately 800 feet (250 meters) from the beach. This prime spot offers immediate access to restaurants, boutiques, and major attractions like the Positano Ferry Landing and Church of Santa Maria Assunta, minimizing the steep climbs often associated with Positano. While cars cannot reach the hotel directly, a short two-minute walk from the taxi drop-off is managed by prompt porter service for luggage. The hotel is valued for being a peaceful "oasis" despite its central position.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing can fluctuate, Hotel Palazzo Murat is positioned as a luxury accommodation, with an average price of around $735 per room. Despite the cost, guests frequently regard it as offering "unbeatable value" for the discerning traveler, given the exceptional service, prime location, and overall luxurious experience.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms are relatively minor but include the fact that not all rooms offer the expansive "gorgeous ocean views" that some cliffside hotels in Positano provide. As mentioned, the decor in some rooms can be perceived as slightly "bland" compared to the grandeur of the communal spaces, and bathrooms can be on the smaller side. The hotel also lacks a dedicated fitness center or a guest computer.

There are many stairs in Positano but Palazzo Murat is central so the stairs are minimized as best as possible. Rooms: Great - we had plenty of room for 2 people with nice amenities. We stayed in "Kings" room. Beautiful tiling finishes and furniture. Bathroom is "westerner tourist" frien...

We captured a beautiful rehearsal dinner at Palazzo Murat in Positano, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Tucked right in the heart of town, surrounded by lush gardens and incredible bougainvillea, the place feels like a hidden paradise. The atmosphere was vibrant, romantic, and full of that unmistakable Positano charm.

Great location and exceptional service! There are many shops around the hotel and it’s very close to the beach. Lucio was awesome and helped us book an excursion to Capri which made our trip extra memorable. We also highly recommend taking a sunset cruise, it was the highlight of our visit. We truly had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary in Positano!
