Expert Review: Villa Treville

Villa Treville, a Michelin Key Selected property nestled on the cliffside of Positano, Italy, offers guests a truly luxurious and unforgettable escape with breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast. This exquisite retreat, once the summer residence of acclaimed Italian opera and film director Franco Zeffirelli, blends cinematic glamour with exceptional hospitality and a tranquil, intimate atmosphere.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Villa Treville is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional" and "outstanding." The hotel boasts high ratings, often scoring 9.4, 9.5, 9.7, and even 10/10 on various platforms for its service, location, and overall experience. Many consider it a "luxurious sanctuary" and a "hidden paradise" that provides an unforgettable experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of Villa Treville:

  • Breathtaking Views: The hotel offers stunning panoramic vistas of Positano and the Tyrrhenian Sea from almost every vantage point, including rooms, terraces, and the restaurant.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff's attentiveness, warmth, and genuine desire to make stays comfortable are frequently highlighted. A responsive WhatsApp concierge service further enhances the personalized experience.
  • Private Beach Access: A significant draw is the hotel's private beach and sea access, offering a serene escape from the more crowded public areas.
  • Stunning Design & Atmosphere: The property's history as Franco Zeffirelli's home is evident in its unique and eclectic design, featuring hand-painted tiled flooring, original artwork, Moorish decor, and lush gardens with secret terraces and pools. The ambiance is often compared to staying in an exclusive private home.
  • Complimentary Water Shuttle: A 10-minute complimentary water shuttle service to Positano provides easy access to the town while allowing guests to retreat to the hotel's tranquility away from the crowds.

3. Room Quality

The rooms and suites at Villa Treville are described as luxurious, spacious, and uniquely decorated, each possessing its own character and charm. Many feature sea-view balconies or terraces, offering spectacular outlooks. Common amenities include plush king-sized beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, a complimentary minibar, and private bathrooms equipped with organic toiletries and slippers. Some higher-category suites also boast private plunge pools. The decor incorporates ancient tiles and bespoke lighting, contributing to a cozy, comfortable, and clean environment.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Villa Treville is a highlight, centered around Maestro's fine-dining restaurant. It offers a delightful blend of traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine, with dishes prepared using fresh, locally sourced, and often organic ingredients from the hotel's own farm. Guests enjoy panoramic views of the Positano coastline while savoring their meals. Breakfast, served on the terrace, receives high praise for its deliciousness and variety, including both sweet and savory options. The Bianca Bar, with its Moorish-inspired decor, offers an exceptional cocktail experience, featuring drinks crafted with herbs and botanicals from the estate's gardens. Room service is also available for added convenience.

5. Service & Staff

The seamless service, from check-in to arranging transport and reservations via a responsive WhatsApp concierge, is frequently lauded.

6. Location & Accessibility

Villa Treville is situated on a cliffside just outside the main bustling area of Positano, offering a serene and private location with stunning views. This position allows for a more tranquil experience away from the crowds and traffic of Positano. While not in the immediate town center, the hotel provides a convenient 10-minute complimentary water shuttle service to Positano. It is also located near the Path of the Gods trailhead for those interested in hiking. For arrivals, guests typically fly into Naples International Airport or Rome Fiumicino Airport, followed by a private car service or a combination of train and taxi/shuttle to reach the hotel. However, guests should be aware that the property has many stairs and narrow corridors, which might pose challenges for individuals with mobility issues.

7. Value & Pricing

Villa Treville is positioned as a high-end luxury property, with pricing reflecting its exclusivity and exceptional offerings. The average room price is around $1209, significantly higher than the average hotel room price in Positano. During high season, suites can exceed €3000 per night. Despite the high cost, many guests feel the experience is "totally worthy" and that they "truly get what you pay for," citing the unparalleled luxury, intimate atmosphere, and unforgettable moments as justifications for the price. It is generally recommended for luxury travelers seeking a unique and intimate boutique experience.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Mobility Challenges: The most frequent complaint concerns the property's numerous stairs and narrow corridors, making it less suitable for guests with mobility issues.
  • Isolated Incident of Theft: A very serious, albeit isolated, complaint involved a guest being robbed on the hotel premises by a fish supplier, leading to allegations of the hotel not taking full responsibility.
  • Room Noise: One guest reported constant noise from a room located beneath the reception area.
  • Breakfast Variety (Minor): While generally praised, one review described breakfast as "surprisingly sparse and restrained" compared to offerings at neighboring luxury hotels.

It’s been less than a week since my daughter and I returned from our father and daughter trip at Villa Treville and we’re still talking about it nonstop. We truly had the time of our lives and everything about this place was perfection. The service was beyond exceptional, the restaurant and fine dining were unforgettable, and the rooms were stunning in every detail. The Rock Beach Club was incred...

Wanted a Hugo spritz at the bar. Was told it’s €300 admission fee just to enter the bar, not including the drink. No explanation of such a ridiculous policy. If this is their idea of cashing in on notoriety because their location is used in a second-rate streaming series, it will backfire. BTW the series Hotel Costiera wasn’t actually filmed here - they’re just playing up the myth. View is just li...

This is my favorite hotel on this coast. I really love it, even though it keeps getting more and more expensive. But honestly, it’s worth it. In fact, it could probably charge even more, and I’d still choose to stay here. The team changes quite a lot, which isn’t great for any hotel, but somehow they always manage to have a really good crew. Every time I come back, I feel happy I picked this place...

Room: 5/5 uniquely decorated rooms, all curated with beautiful decor and breath taking views. Some rooms have bit of a walk up stairs- would not recommend for handicappers, but we had no issues with this. The steps were worth the view! The entire hotel was the most stunning I’ve stayed in. Decorated beautifully and curated uniquely. Service: 5/5 due to small resort, very personalized experience. ...
