1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Metropole Venice is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its distinctive character, prime location, and exceptional service. It's often described as feeling like "part museum and part boutique luxury hotel." The hotel consistently receives excellent ratings for cleanliness, comfort, and staff performance. Review scores are high, with an overall experience rating of 19.0 out of 20 by Michelin Guide and a guest score of 8.7 out of 10 from over 450 reviews.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with several aspects of Hotel Metropole Venice:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel is celebrated for its decadent, eclectic, and art-filled interiors, showcasing the owner's extensive collections of antiques and curiosities, such as fans, corkscrews, and crucifixes, displayed throughout the property. This unique decor creates a "museum-like experience" and a truly memorable atmosphere. The ambiance is often described as luxurious, offbeat, and full of personality.
  • Service: The staff is consistently highlighted as incredibly helpful, kind, cordial, and attentive. The concierge service is particularly noted for being expert in tailoring guest experiences.
  • Location: Its central location on the Riva degli Schiavoni, close to St. Mark's Square, the Bridge of Sighs, and the San Zaccaria Vaporetto stop, is a major draw. It also boasts a private water entrance, enhancing accessibility.
  • Amenities: Beyond its renowned dining, the hotel features beautiful gardens, including a citrus garden courtyard, and a seductive and exclusive spa and wellness center. The historic Oriental Bar, once a chapel where Vivaldi taught music, now serves as a lounge for cocktails and tea.

3. Room Quality

The 67 guest rooms at Hotel Metropole Venice are described as stunning, comfortable, and individually decorated, each possessing its own unique character and style.

  • Design: Rooms feature lavish Old-World European-style decor, often with antique furniture, intricate carvings, heavily patterned fabrics, and historical touches like brocade soft furnishings or 18th-century pieces. Some even boast Art Deco finishes. Drapes often match the wallpaper, bedspreads, and table linens, creating a cohesive, opulent feel.
  • Comfort: While generally comfortable, one older review mentioned that some "grand old beds don't quite have heavenly mattresses." However, newer descriptions highlight premium bedding, pillowtop beds, and hypo-allergenic options.
  • Views: Rooms offer various views, including the lagoon, the garden, or the canal, with some suites featuring balconies.
  • In-Room Amenities: Standard amenities include air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and fully stocked minibars. Bathrooms are often described as ornate and provide Gilchrist & Soames bath products. Some larger suites also offer hot tubs or spa tubs.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Hotel Metropole Venice is a significant highlight, particularly its Michelin-starred restaurant.

  • MET Restaurant: The in-house MET Restaurant boasts one Michelin star, serving inventive and sophisticated Venetian cuisine with forward-thinking techniques. The restaurant itself is designed like a theater, with a raised stage and antique paintings under Murano glass chandeliers. Ingredients are locally sourced, with fish from the Rialto Market and vegetables from St. Erasmo gardens.
  • Breakfast: A delicious buffet breakfast is offered, served in the elegant breakfast room or the charming citrus garden courtyard when weather permits. Guests praise the quality and selection of items.
  • Oriental Bar: The Oriental Bar, a historic chapel, provides a lounge setting for evening cocktails and also serves light meals and snacks throughout the day. The cocktail-making ritual is noted as an experience in itself. The hotel also maintains a tradition of teatime in this historic space.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Hotel Metropole Venice consistently receives high praise from guests. The staff is described as extremely kind, cordial, helpful, and attentive. Many reviews highlight the staff's professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond for guests. The concierge service is particularly noted for its expertise in planning and tailoring guest experiences in Venice.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Metropole Venice enjoys an excellent and central location on the Riva degli Schiavoni promenade, making it highly accessible and convenient for exploring the city.

  • Nearby Attractions: It's just a short stroll from St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Harry's Bar is also within easy reach.
  • Transport: The hotel is only 200 meters from the San Zaccaria Vaporetto water bus stop. Crucially, it has a private water entrance, making arrivals and departures via water taxi or the Alilaguna public water transport service from Marco Polo Airport very convenient, allowing guests to roll their bags directly to the lobby.
  • Neighborhood: While in a touristy part of Venice, it's slightly removed from the busiest areas, offering a sense of calm within its walls. The immediate surroundings offer both residential areas with local shops and easy access to major sights.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star hotel and a Michelin One-Key property, Hotel Metropole Venice is considered a premium accommodation. The average room price is around $575, which is notably higher than the average hotel room in Venice (approximately $260).

  • Value: Despite the higher price point, guests generally feel it offers "exceptional value for money" and that the experience is "worth every penny" due to its unique character, high level of service, and prime location.
  • Price Range: Prices can fluctuate significantly, with February being the cheapest month (average 36% drop) and October being the most expensive (average 44% rise). Rates can range from around $344 to over €1,400 per night for larger suites during high season.

8. Common Complaints

While overall guest satisfaction is very high, a few minor points have been noted:

  • Mattress Comfort: An older review mentioned that some of the "grand old beds don't quite have heavenly mattresses." This suggests that while rooms are luxurious, mattress comfort might vary or have been an area for improvement in the past.
  • Front Desk/Concierge Communication (Historical): One older review from 2019 described the front desk and concierge staff as potentially "floridly unhelpful" in the "Italian style," providing many words but little concrete information. However, more recent reviews overwhelmingly praise the staff's helpfulness and attentiveness, suggesting this may no longer be a prevalent issue or was an isolated experience.
  • Internal Staff Complaints: While not directly affecting guest experience, some employee reviews from years ago on platforms like Indeed cited issues with management, long hours without extra pay, and high staff turnover. However, these are internal complaints and do not seem to be reflected in recent guest feedback regarding service quality.

Excellent service with lots of attention to details. All the staff were super friendly. The room was great. Perfect location, beautiful decor inside the hotel and through out all floor. All as a 5 star hotel should be. We will be back.

Love the decorations in the hotel! It's like a mini-maze; you walk around and explore the little surprises in the hallway decors/exhibits. Very nostalgic feeling during the stay. It's also located conveniently next to a boat station. Walking distance to the St. Mark's Square.

The best possible hotel I could have stayed in Venice. Exquisite rooms with stunning Murano glass chandeliers. Beautiful outdoor Garden/ sitting area where you don't even feel like you are in Venice. Peacefully hidden away and just glorious. Lovely bar/lounge area with coffee area for breakfast.

My wife and I went to the Hotel Metropole to use their spa for a massage and a private relaxation session after a week in Venice. The spa manager was absolutely wonderful, and gave us both excellent massages - the spa itself was private and intimate, perfect for a thorough relaxing away from the city. We would definitely recommend.

This hotel was beautiful and situated in a pretty location but it did not seem like a 5 star hotel at all. The first room we were given had a shower that was completely covered in mold and only half of the shower head had water coming out. They gave us a new room which was much better but overall the room was pretty standard. Nothing crazy. The staff was a mixed bag. Several members of the front...

This is not about rooms in the hotel but about the cafe with red seats. I got scammed by the tall charming waiter there. Had a cappuccino and a small slice of apple cake and an apple juice for €42! At first, he just punch €50 in the register but I pretended I it’s not for me. I ignored it. Then stare at him for a good 30 seconds till he punches some items. There were in Italian and I couldn’t read...
