The general consensus for Hotel Matilda is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "very good" to excellent. Review scores highlight its prime location, cleanliness, comfort, and outstanding staff. The hotel is lauded for its unique blend of contemporary art, cutting-edge design, and warm Mexican hospitality, creating a tranquil and sophisticated atmosphere. It's often described as a "world-class hotel" that exceeds expectations in terms of room, design, and ambiance.
2. Key Highlights

- Service & Staff: The staff receives continuous commendation for being "extremely friendly and helpful," "super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable," and "attentive and incredible." They are known for making guests feel welcome and for their efficient and refined service.
- Location: Its central location is a significant draw, allowing easy walking access to major attractions, shopping, and dining in San Miguel de Allende. It's situated near the main square and adjacent to leafy Parque Juarez.
- Design & Art: The hotel's modern, art-gallery-like ambiance, featuring a significant collection of works by acclaimed Mexican and international artists, is a standout feature. The clean lines, crisp whites, and neutral color schemes are enlivened by vibrant artwork, creating a sophisticated yet not pretentious environment. The hotel's design has even been credited with attracting a younger, more creative demographic to San Miguel de Allende.
- Amenities: Luxurious extras such as a sleek outdoor infinity pool, a full-service spa with a hammam and steam bath, and a modern fitness center are frequently appreciated. Many rooms also offer private outdoor spaces.
3. Room Quality
Hotel Matilda's 32 rooms and suites are described as spacious, modern, and thoughtfully designed. They feature a minimalist aesthetic with gray tones, simple dark wood furniture, and modern Mexican photography. Comfort is emphasized with pillowtop mattresses and Egyptian cotton linens. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, phones, and free Wi-Fi. Many rooms include private balconies or terraces, some offering views of the surrounding mountains or courtyard.
Bathrooms are often highlighted for their sumptuousness, featuring double vanities, walk-in showers or separate soaking tubs, and premium Malin + Goetz bath products. Some guests appreciate thoughtful touches like gradually dimming bathroom lights. However, some note that the sliding wood and steel bathroom doors can be a bit hefty.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Hotel Matilda is a significant highlight.
- Moxi Restaurant: The hotel's signature fine-dining restaurant, Moxi, offers highly-rated, innovative Mexican cuisine. It has been helmed by renowned chefs (including Enrique Olvera and Vicente Torres) and is praised for its locally sourced ingredients and stylish, intimate setting. Guests have enjoyed expertly prepared dishes, often describing dinner as an "exciting experience."
- Bar Matilda / Monkey Bar: This trendy hotspot is known for its signature cocktails and chic atmosphere, often overlooking the pool and vibrant murals.
- Breakfast: A continental breakfast, usually including good coffee, fruit, and toast, is typically included in the rates. Transfers can be arranged from Bajio Airport (BJX), which is about 87 miles away, or from Queretaro and Mexico City.

While specific price ranges vary, Hotel Matilda is considered a luxury property, reflected in its Michelin Key status. Given the world-class amenities, exceptional service, and prime location, many guests find the experience to be a good value, even if it "might not be a steal." - Bathroom Doors: The heavy, sliding bathroom doors have been a slight inconvenience for some older guests.
- Water Bottle Charges: In a specific instance, a guest was charged for water bottles typically provided free of charge for turndown service, which they found unusual.

Absolutely beautiful hotel with immaculate rooms. The location is perfect for easily getting to many of the main attractions in San Miguel De Allende. The staff was friendly, attentive, and very helpful. They gave us a number of recommendations and helped us set up dinner reservations at a couple of other restaurants. As a "boutique" hotel there are not a huge number of rooms (I believe 32) so it...

Great location. So many things about this hotel is just fair and service is one of them. I booked a room for 3 people. That means 3 towel sets, 3 cups for coffee, 3 glasses, 3 complimentary water bottles. Well they didn’t provide that. At check in we only had one cup of coffee. We booked breakfast with the room. First I was able to order cappuccino but I never tasted anything so weak and bad tha...

The location of this hotel can't be beat. The bed is extremely comfortable. If you stay in the main building, be aware that the rooms can be a bit noisy in the morning. Would be great that every room had a bathtub.

Wish the pool was heated. We asked. For the price it really should be. Also would have a few more options on the menu that you can order by the pool or for room service. Otherwise we really enjoyed the stay! Staff was great. Room was great. Also, my husband called them to tell them it was our anniversary, asking if they could do something special. It wasn’t remembered at check-in, until we mention...

Great little hotel with 30 something rooms spread over a few buildings. Interiors are well designed and light. Bed comfortable. Location is unbeatable, steps from Parque Juarez and a few blocks from the Jardin.

Exceptional dinner at Moxi. The food, service and atmosphere was a 10! Heavy rain at end of evening made it difficult to get an uber or taxi. During our wait, Axle at the front desk of the hotel was a most excellent and pleasant host. Chatting about San Miguel, places not to miss made the time pass with ease.
