Expert Review: Hotel Indigo Kraków

Hotel Indigo Kraków - Old Town: A Blend of Historic Charm and Modern Comfort

Hotel Indigo Kraków - Old Town by IHG stands out as a "MICHELIN Guide hotel selection" property, celebrated for its unique character, excellent service, and prime location in Kraków's historic heart. Housed in a beautifully converted 1836 tenement building, the hotel seamlessly blends its rich history with contemporary design, drawing inspiration from local Polish artists.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the hotel's beautiful interior design, comfortable rooms, and exceptional staff. Guests frequently describe their stay as pleasant, highlighting the hotel's ability to offer a relaxing and regenerating experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Hotel Indigo Kraków - Old Town:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel boasts a beautiful and quirky-yet-hip interior design with attention to detail. Exposed brick and concrete lend an industrial loft vibe, particularly in some rooms, while art throughout the ages forms the hotel's theme.
  • Location: Its excellent and central location is a recurring highlight, being close to the Old Town, the main train station, and a vibrant local market.
  • Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as wonderful, accommodating, helpful, and exceptionally friendly, contributing significantly to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Dining: The on-site restaurant, Filipa 18, receives high praise for its quality and Michelin distinction.
  • Amenities: Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, well-appointed bathrooms often featuring heated floors and rainfall showers, and amenities like free Wi-Fi, fitness center, and a bar.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers 56 individually designed rooms and suites, inspired by illustrious Polish artists like Jan Matejko and Stanisław Wyspiański. Rooms are generally described as very nice, comfortable, and clean, with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, premium bedding, and laptop-friendly workspaces. Many bathrooms include walk-in showers and heated floors, enhancing comfort. While some reviewers note the rooms can be "small" (around 200 sq. ft. for a Premium King City View), they are considered well-appointed and quiet. Large windows often provide ample light and can be vented for fresh air.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Hotel Indigo Kraków is a significant draw, primarily due to the acclaimed Filipa 18 Restaurant, which is consistently recognized in the Michelin Guide.

  • Restaurant Filipa 18: Curates modern Polish cuisine under the expertise of chefs like Paweł Oszczyk and Marcin Sołtys, who pride themselves on sourcing the finest regional and seasonal ingredients from the nearby Stary Kleparz market. The menu changes seasonally, offering sophisticated dishes with an element of artistic creativity. Many guests have enjoyed dinner at Filipa 18, with some noting that over half the diners were non-residents, speaking to its quality.
  • Breakfast: The breakfast is frequently described as excellent and lovely, offering a variety of dishes, freshly baked breads, pastries, muffins, and a selection of omelets, scrambled eggs, and eggs benedict. Lighter options like granolas, yogurts, and smoothies are also available, alongside local cheeses and cold cuts. However, one past review noted that food items might not always be replaced during the last hour of service, and the dining room could sometimes lack a vibrant energy.
  • Bar: The hotel features a great, well-stocked bar, and a rooftop SkyBar has also been mentioned as a discovery for some guests.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Hotel Indigo Kraków receive high praise. Guests consistently highlight the staff as wonderful, very accommodating, helpful, and friendly. They are noted for being knowledgeable and making guests feel right at home. Front desk staff have also assisted with arranging transport and tour reservations.

The hotel boasts an excellent and strategic location, allowing guests to easily explore Kraków:

  • Proximity to Attractions: It is situated in the artistic heart of Krakow, just a short walk from major sites like the Barbican, St. Florian's Gate, the Cloth Hall, and the Royal Wawel Castle (about a 30-minute walk).
  • Transportation Hubs: The hotel is a convenient five-minute walk from the Main Bus and Train Station (Kraków Główny). This also makes it easily accessible from John Paul II International Krakow-Balice Airport via a quick 22-minute train ride.
  • Neighborhood: Located near the Old Kleparz food market, the area offers a local market gem and is slightly quieter than staying directly in the Old Town, yet still offers quick access to restaurants, theaters, museums, and business centers.

7. Value & Pricing

Hotel Indigo Kraków - Old Town offers affordable luxury. With an average room rate around $143, it provides a luxurious experience that many find to be incredible value for money, especially compared to the average hotel price in Kraków which is around $121. Prices can range from approximately $96 to $128 in low season for certain room types. January is typically the cheapest month, while September is the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While overall feedback is very positive, some minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Size: A few guests have found the rooms, even Premium King City View rooms, to be relatively small (around 200 sq. ft.).
  • Breakfast Service (Minor): One older review mentioned that food items might not always be consistently replaced during the last hour of breakfast service, and the dining room atmosphere could sometimes feel subdued.
  • Housekeeping Issues (Isolated): An isolated incident reported a mix-up with left-behind shoes and a missed room cleaning, though the hotel actively responded to resolve these issues, clarifying misunderstandings.
  • Window Blinds: In loft rooms, the window blinds were reported by one guest as being difficult to operate, even for staff.

Rooms nice, although a bit special. Service is very friendly and they will help you with things. I got the breakfast bag and it was good for a breakfast on the go. Location is very central and as long as you want to walk to places it is good. I would prefer to not go by car there :)

It's well positioned for old town and staff friendly and helpful. Suffers from the usual hotel Indigo odd match of cheap fittings and fixture mismatch. Bed offers a good rest over the walking and sightseeing are done. Great coffee shop 2 mins round the corner on edge of local market.

An hotel full of contrasts. +: good geographic situation both close to old Town and the train station, nice breakfast with a nice staff at the restaurant. -: we were unfortunate to be welcomed in our room by toilets not flushed and with stains… I tried to clean and since it was not enough, I asked the reception to clean it… it was only well done the day after, due to an additional request. Besid...
