Expert Review: Hotel Indigo Cardiff

Hotel Indigo Cardiff, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its blend of modern design, exceptional service, and prime city-centre location, making it a top choice for travelers visiting Cardiff.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Hotel Indigo Cardiff enjoys an overwhelmingly positive reputation, with guest review scores frequently ranging from 8.9 to 9.2 out of 10, categorizing it as "excellent" and "fabulous" across various platforms. Guests often describe their stay as "exceptional" and consider the hotel a "top choice" in Cardiff.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several standout features of Hotel Indigo Cardiff. The friendly and incredibly helpful staff are frequently commended for going "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant stay. Its central location is a major draw, providing easy access to Cardiff's main attractions. The hotel's unique design, reflecting Welsh themes and local culture, is also a significant plus, along with its spacious and well-appointed rooms. Complimentary mini-bar items, including coffee, tea, hard cider, and water, are a welcome amenity.

Room Quality

The 122 rooms at Hotel Indigo Cardiff are described as spacious, comfortable, clean, neat, and beautifully presented. Each room incorporates distinct local themes such as "Music," "Made in Wales," and "Welsh Industry," featuring industrial, rustic designs with metal, wood, and leather finishes, alongside local art and textiles. Amenities include large double beds with premium bedding, armchairs, flat-screen TVs with digital channels, desks, and air conditioning. Bathrooms are modern and well-equipped with excellent, "spa-inspired" showers (including rain and handheld options), bathrobes, and locally made designer toiletries. Guests also appreciate the complimentary wireless internet, USB charging points, and in-room safes.

Dining Experience

The hotel's dining experience is primarily centered around the rooftop restaurant, Lefel6 Bar and Restaurant, which also houses a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill. This establishment offers British cuisine for brunch, lunch, dinner, and light fare, specializing in local dishes using fine ingredients. Breakfast, served in the Marco Pierre White restaurant, is highly rated (8.5/10) and is a combination of a plentiful continental buffet and hot à la carte options, including a "Full English/Irish," Vegetarian, Vegan, and dishes like poached eggs, avocado, and smoked salmon on sourdough. A cooked-to-order breakfast is available for a surcharge, approximately £16.95 per person. A 24-hour bar and a small coffee shop on the ground floor provide additional options.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at Hotel Indigo Cardiff consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests frequently commend them as "fabulous," "incredibly helpful," "above and beyond," "kind," "courteous," "friendly," and "welcoming." Personalized touches, such as welcome messages in Welsh on mirrors and sweet treats, contribute to a memorable and hospitable experience.

Location & Accessibility

Hotel Indigo Cardiff boasts an excellent central location on Queen Street, a pedestrianized area within the Dominions Arcade, offering a sense of calm despite being in the city centre. This makes it incredibly convenient for exploring Cardiff's key attractions. It's a short walk (3-5 minutes) to Cardiff Castle and Bute Park, 200 metres from St David's Hall, and about 500 metres (1640 feet) from Principality Stadium and Motorpoint Arena Cardiff. Cardiff Central Station is also within a 5 to 15-minute walk, providing easy access to regional and national transport links. While there is no on-site car park, guests can receive a 25% discount at the nearby NCP Greyfriars car park.

Value & Pricing

The hotel generally offers good value for money, especially considering its upscale amenities and central location. The average room price is around $166, which is comparable to or slightly above the average for a hotel room in Cardiff ($150). However, prices can fluctuate, with some nightly rates found as low as £67.00.

Common Complaints

While guest satisfaction is generally very high, a few minor recurring issues have been noted. Some guests have experienced slow lifts and occasionally found the in-room televisions to be slow, not set to the correct time, or unable to connect to personal devices for casting. There was also a mention of a mini-bar not being restocked. A few older, non-specific Hotel Indigo brand reviews mention issues with card payments or deposits and communication from management, but these do not appear to be widespread problems specific to the Cardiff location.

We had a genuinely great stay at Hotel Indigo Cardiff by IHG, and overall it set the bar high. The hotel strikes a really nice balance between style and comfort. The design feels modern and thoughtful without being overdone, and the rooms were spotless, well laid out, and genuinely comfortable. The small details were well considered and made the stay feel easy rather than generic. Staff were fri...

What an amazing hotel! Staff were polite and helpful, the rooms were very big as was the bathroom (the shower was a delight) and the location is great. It was quite noisy outside since you're in the city centre but once you're inside there is no noise, not even people wandering around to the room. Very good price too.

Breakfast was excellent. In addition to usual buffet, you can order a main, which is included in the breakfast price. Kipper was so delicious! The lady who looked after our table was attentive and friendly.

We recently stayed here for one night, as were seeing Lewis Capaldi at the Utilita Arena. We had two rooms, as we took our teenage daughters with us. The hotel from start to finish was fantastic. Great location, right in the heart of Cardiff with easy walking distance to everything. Really tastefully done bedrooms, with an amazing queen size bed, that was incredibly comfortable. We didn't hear a s...

Our experience was ok. The room was not very clean, there were hairs in the bed, pillows, shower and tap. The tv screen was dirty and there was dust in many parts of the room. It was also very smelly when we got in, not smelling good neither smelling cleanliness. We also got disappointed as our bedroom didn’t have any view at all, the windows had a frosted glass sticker which reduced significantly...

We stayed here three nights in a Twin Standard room, and we can definitely recommend this hotel. The location is excellent - close to shopping, pubs, and the castle, and close enough to the train stations. The breakfast was very typical for UK hotels, and is served in the restaurant/bar on the sixth floor. The service there was always friendly and efficient. Our room was spacious, probably becaus...
