Expert Review: Hotel Gut Ising

Hotel Gut Ising in Chieming, Germany, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely regarded as a tranquil and luxurious retreat, offering a blend of historic charm and modern amenities amidst the stunning Bavarian landscape. Situated on an expansive 170-hectare estate near Lake Chiemsee, it consistently earns high praise from guests.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Gut Ising is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "very relaxed" and "beautiful" property with a "grand feel". Ratings for cleanliness, comfort, and staff are consistently high, often exceeding 9 out of 10. Many consider it an "oasis of calm and relaxation", perfect for both short getaways and longer stays.

2. Key Highlights

Guests particularly love the extensive Gut Ising Spa & Wellness area, featuring indoor and outdoor pools, multiple saunas, hot tubs, and a steam room, offering a wide range of treatments. The sprawling 170-hectare grounds are a significant highlight, providing ample space for relaxation and various activities. The hotel boasts a private 9-hole golf course, a riding school, a polo club, and tennis courts, catering to active guests. Its family-friendly and dog-friendly policies are also appreciated, with specific amenities like a dog bar and dog shower available. The diverse culinary offerings across its several restaurants are another strong point.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Hotel Gut Ising are spread across eight distinct buildings, each contributing to the hotel's unique character. Guests generally find them well-equipped and "lovingly furnished," with some featuring a "modern with a countryside twist" design. Standard amenities include satellite TV, a minibar (often with complimentary soft drinks), and modern bathrooms. Hypo-allergenic bedding and a pillow menu are available to enhance comfort. While many rooms are praised for being new and comfortable, some older reviews mention instances of "worn out" rooms or "old and stained" furniture and towels. Some rooms may also lack air conditioning, which can be a concern during warmer months.

4. Dining Experience

Hotel Gut Ising offers a diverse culinary journey with four restaurants and a bar.

  • Goldener Pflug serves traditional German dishes and international favorites.
  • Il Cavallo delights with Italian cuisine, boasting a summer terrace that offers views of Lake Chiemsee.
  • Gourmetrestaurant USINGA specializes in international cuisine and Alpine specialties.
  • The Derby Bar & Grill provides high-level Alpine cuisine, and a cozy Fondue Restaurant is available from October to March. Breakfast consistently receives excellent reviews for its high quality and wide variety, making for a superb start to the day.

5. Service & Staff

The hotel's service and staff are frequently highlighted as exceptional. Guests commend the team for being "very friendly," "super friendly," "competent," and "helpful". Many appreciate the warm welcome and personalized attention, with some guests noting that staff members remember them by name upon return visits. The professional and attentive service contributes significantly to the overall positive guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Gut Ising enjoys a picturesque and quiet location on a 170-hectare estate in Chieming-Izing, with a slightly elevated position on the north-eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee. The lake itself is approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away, and guests have access to a private lakeside area with a bathhouse. The hotel is well-connected by car, located about 13 km from the A8 motorway. The nearest train station is in Traunstein, around 14 km away, with taxi and bus connections available. For air travelers, Salzburg Airport is 55 km away, and Munich Airport is 150 km away, both offering taxi and shuttle services (for a surcharge) to the hotel. The property also provides ample free self-parking and electric vehicle charging stations.

7. Value & Pricing

While Hotel Gut Ising is a luxurious 4-star superior property, its value for money is generally rated positively, typically around 8.3 out of 10. Room rates can vary, starting from approximately €155 for an Economy Single Room or around $173 to $241 USD per night. The hotel offers attractive discounts for longer stays: 10% for 7-9 nights, 15% for 10-13 nights, and 20% for stays of 14 nights or more. It's worth noting that a minimum stay of 5 nights is often required in August and during New Year's.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring criticisms have been noted. A few guests have reported that certain older rooms might appear "worn out" or have "old and stained" furniture and towels. The absence of air conditioning in some rooms has been a point of discomfort, particularly during warm summer months. One guest experienced issues with mosquitoes and damaged window nets, preventing them from opening windows. While the spa is a highlight, some visitors seeking tranquility found the indoor pool and outdoor whirlpool areas to be noisy and crowded with children, diminishing the relaxation experience. Additionally, while staff are generally excellent, there have been isolated comments about service being less proactive in assisting with luggage, especially over the property's cobbled pathways. The lake access is not always described as straightforward, and some guests find the dining options, apart from the Pizzeria, to be on the pricier side.
