Expert Review: Hotel du Palais

Hotel du Palais, Biarritz: A Grand Imperial Experience with Modern Comforts

Nestled regally on Biarritz's picturesque coastline, the Hotel du Palais stands as a testament to imperial grandeur and timeless luxury. Originally built in 1855 by Napoleon III as a summer villa for Empress Eugénie, this Michelin Two-Key property offers guests an exceptional stay where history seamlessly blends with modern amenities and impeccable service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel du Palais is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as an "underrated luxury" property and one of the most beautiful Hyatt-branded hotels globally. It consistently receives high praise for its breathtaking beauty, historical charm, extensive amenities, and generally good service. Many consider it a destination in itself, perfect for those seeking the vibe of a European seaside town.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the Hotel du Palais for several key aspects:

  • Stunning Old-World Design & History: The hotel's imperial origins are evident throughout, from the opulent public areas adorned with Napoleonic frippery to its majestic redbrick and beige palace architecture. Its history as a former imperial residence adds a unique layer of charm and sophistication.
  • Exceptional Location: Situated directly on the Grand Plage, the hotel boasts unparalleled ocean-front views of the Atlantic and the rugged Basque coast. It's also centrally located, offering easy walking access to Biarritz's town center, shops, dining, and attractions like the casino.
  • Extensive Amenities: The hotel provides a wealth of facilities, including a beautiful spa, both indoor and outdoor pools, a well-equipped gym, and multiple dining options. The outdoor seawater pool, surrounded by private cabanas with sunbeds, offers spectacular ocean views. The Imperial Spa, featuring Guerlain treatments, a freshwater indoor pool, whirlpool, hammam, and sauna, is frequently highlighted as a peaceful haven for relaxation.
  • Excellent Dining: The hotel's restaurants are noted for their quality, offering refined French cuisine and often spectacular sea views.

3. Room Quality

The Hotel du Palais offers 142 rooms, including 56 elegantly appointed suites. While some standard rooms may not offer sea views, they are lavishly decorated with rich fabrics and period furniture, ensuring a high standard of comfort. Suites are described as suitably grand, often featuring separate living rooms, king-sized beds, and spacious bathrooms with double sinks, soaking tubs, and walk-in showers. Toiletries are provided by Guerlain. Rooms generally include contemporary amenities such as air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and 24-hour room service. Hypoallergenic bedding and cribs are also available. Some top-floor rooms feature a unique "cruise liner" theme with porthole windows, which offers sea views but can make enjoying the full panorama challenging.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a diverse and highly-regarded dining experience across its several restaurants. La Rotonde is particularly noted for its regal setting, spectacular soaring columns, gilt trim, and unmatched sea views, offering a gastronomic experience with refined French cuisine. Breakfast, often complimentary for elite members, is a highlight, featuring a menu-based selection (like eggs and waffles) combined with a buffet of fresh pastries, fruits, breads, and local cheeses, all served in a regal dining room with Atlantic views. Hippocampe provides a more relaxed setting for lunch beside the curved outdoor pool overlooking the Atlantic, while the Sunset offers seasonal dishes in a summer ambiance. The Bar Napoléon III provides a cozy atmosphere for bespoke cocktails.

5. Service & Staff

Service at Hotel du Palais is generally described as "impeccable" and "fantastic." Staff are frequently praised for being attentive, efficient, friendly, and always ready to make a stay memorable. Guests appreciate the personalized service, with valet services being quick and concierges offering excellent local recommendations. While overall feedback on staff performance is positive, one review noted an 8.0 rating for staff performance, indicating a very good but not always perfect experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Hotel du Palais boasts a prime, central location directly on the Grand Plage, offering stunning views and immediate beach access. It's ideal for exploring Biarritz, with the city center, luxury shops, cafés, art galleries, and the casino all within a short walking distance. The Biarritz (BIQ) airport is less than 3 miles away, and San Sebastian airport (EAS) is another option about 22 miles distant. The hotel is easily accessible, and while a car isn't necessary for exploring Biarritz itself, valet parking is available. The hotel is also committed to providing accessibility for individuals with disabilities, with wheelchair-accessible rooms and grounds.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star palace hotel, Hotel du Palais comes with a premium price tag. Cash prices can range from an average of $351-$400 in lower seasons, but can reach €1,200 for base rooms during peak summer and fall months. For World of Hyatt members, free nights can be redeemed for 35,000 to 45,000 points per night, which is considered a good value by some. While expensive, many guests feel the experience is well worth the cost, particularly for special occasions, due to the blend of luxury, history, and personal service.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Wi-Fi Issues: Some guests have experienced intermittent Wi-Fi connectivity, particularly in certain room locations like top-floor suites.
  • "Cruise Liner" Room Concept: The design of some top-floor rooms, with porthole-style windows and a nautical theme, has been described as a "quirk" and not preferred by all guests, with some finding it makes enjoying the sea view challenging.
  • Gym Opening Hours: One guest mentioned frustration with the gym only opening at 8 AM.
  • Comparison to Other Palace Hotels: While highly luxurious, some reviews suggest that certain areas of the hotel, beyond the lobby and restaurant, may not feel quite on the same elite level as some other French Palace hotels.
  • Shower Size in Suites: In some large suites, such as the Ambassador Suite, the shower has been noted as surprisingly small.
  • Employee Feedback: Some employee reviews (from 2024 and 2025) mention issues with management, a disconnected F&B department, and low salaries for the region, hinting at potential internal issues that could indirectly impact guest experience, though this is not widely reflected in guest reviews.

My first stay at the hotel, for three nights - such a beautiful and charming place. I would definitely stay again. Helpful and courteous staff, who spoke very clear French (even I could understand it). We had a huge room with a sea view. Breakfast in the rotunda was superb - a massive selection of food, in great surroundings. I loved the dramatic atmosphere of the cocktail lounge which also had a ...

Come to the Brasserie for dinner. It doesn’t disappoint. Especially if you dine on the terrace or window side. I stayed here a few years back, and the room was lovely, breakfast exquisite. I came back just to dine this last summer and the terrace at sunset was incredible! Definitely worth a visit while in Biarritz!

As the hotel was originally built by Napoleon III for his empress, it carries great historical significance and an exceptional sense of luxury. This is truly what one would call a “luxury hotel.” Moreover, the spa and hotel facilities are excellent, and I felt that even during the off-season or in less favorable weather, guests can fully enjoy their stay at the hotel. It was truly a wonderful prop...

We passed by for a coffee and champagne to a have a business meeting with my partner (2 persons) around 12:30, Friday. We were refused to sit at the terrace with nice weather, been said it was full but it wasn’t. Ok. We sat inside in the bar. Bringing the menu took 20 min! Bringing champagne another 15. Champagne was very good, though. Waiter was nice to us but too long, we were not the only ones ...
