Expert Review: Gravetye Manor
Gravetye Manor, a Michelin Two-Keys property in East Grinstead, United Kingdom, consistently earns high praise as a luxurious and enchanting country house hotel, offering a superb escape into timeless British elegance.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Gravetye Manor is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "superb," "enchanting," and "country house living at its finest." It is widely regarded as a luxurious getaway, a "treasure" that is privately owned and passionately cared for. The hotel's recent recognition with Two Michelin Keys further solidifies its status among the finest hotels in the UK.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly captivated by several aspects of Gravetye Manor:
- Stunning Gardens: The 35 acres of world-renowned gardens, originally created by pioneering horticulturist William Robinson, are a major draw and considered among the most influential in English horticultural history. The Victorian kitchen garden, which supplies over 90% of the restaurant's fresh produce, is a highlight.
- Michelin-Starred Dining: The restaurant, holding one Michelin star, is consistently lauded for its modern British cuisine.
- Impeccable Service: The "old-school" service, characterized by kindness, commitment, and professionalism, makes guests feel like cherished house guests.
- Elizabethan Charm & Design: The Elizabethan manor house, dating back to 1598, offers meticulously preserved decor, creating an atmosphere of historic grandeur and charm.
3. Room Quality
Gravetye Manor features 17 unique rooms and suites, each maintaining the feel of a private home. The rooms are generally described as spacious, charming, and very comfortable, furnished with a mix of antiques, oil paintings, and comfortable sofas. Many boast grand king-size beds, well-appointed bathrooms with large roll-top baths and expansive showers, and compelling views over the gardens. Complimentary minibars and even a bottle of sloe gin are often noted amenities. Some rooms are wood-panelled, while others feature botanical-print wallpaper or four-poster beds.
4. Dining Experience
The Michelin-starred restaurant is a significant draw, renowned for its delicate yet bold modern British cooking, which thoughtfully sources ingredients, particularly from the manor's own kitchen garden. The menu typically consists of four courses, offering a breadth of ingredients without being an exhaustive tasting menu. Diners rave about dishes such as venison, scallop starters, and raspberry soufflé. The bread basket, accompanied by various flavored butters, and the fresh-squeezed breakfast juices are also highlights. While dinner is consistently praised for its excellence, one guest noted that breakfast, while three-course and served in a dining room overlooking beautiful gardens, occasionally had undercooked eggs and overcooked bacon. For longer stays, some guests expressed a desire for more basic or alternative menu options beyond the fine dining experience.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Gravetye Manor is consistently highlighted as impeccable, professional, and genuinely hospitable. Staff are described as friendly, welcoming, kind, and committed, making guests feel like "house guests of a wealthy country relation" where "nothing is too much trouble." From footmen guiding you to parking to attentive restaurant service and helpful sommeliers, the staff contribute significantly to the exceptional experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
Gravetye Manor is nestled in a secluded countryside setting in West Sussex, offering an "off-grid" feel despite being approximately an hour's drive from London and only 20 minutes from London Gatwick Airport. The manor is set within 1,000 acres of woodland, lakes, and fields, with its renowned 35-acre gardens. It is conveniently placed for visiting local attractions such as Hever Castle and Glyndebourne Opera House.
Regarding accessibility, the restaurant is accessible via a gravel path and sloped entrance. However, it's important to note that Gravetye Manor does not have accessible bedrooms as all rooms are located on the first or second floor, and there is no lift.
7. Value & Pricing
Gravetye Manor is considered a very expensive property, with room rates typically ranging from £400 to £1,000 per night for a double room. Dinner menus are priced around £125-£128 per person, with additional costs for beverages. Despite the high price point, many guests feel it is justified, stating that "perfection costs money" and that the cost reflects the caliber of lodging, food, and service provided.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some minor and recurring issues have been noted:
- Limited Entertainment: The hotel's facilities are limited, with no swimming pool or spa on-site, suggesting that guests should seek entertainment in the gardens or local area.
- Room-Specific Issues: One guest reported an extremely slippery bathroom floor, a clogged coffee machine, and a worn television remote control. Another experienced noise and a smell in a room located above the bar area.
- Dining Variety: For guests staying multiple nights, the options outside of the multi-course fine dining menu (such as "bar food" or alternative main courses) were sometimes found to be limiting or uninspiring.
- Accessibility: The lack of accessible bedrooms due to no lift is a significant limitation for guests with mobility issues.

Headed here for a wedding yesterday and had to leave a review. The staff are unbelievably lovely, we were met at the car with an umbrella and walked into the manor. Every member of staff was helpful & very nice, never have I been anywhere where every single member of staff was polite. Beautiful location too but I feel staff make a place and they were absolutely superb!

Some places feel special the moment you arrive. Gravetye Manor is one of them. We checked in and wandered the gardens and kitchen gardens. It is a beautiful place to spend some time. The rooms are beautiful and if you are staying, spending time in the bars and sitting rooms is a great way to relax and enjoy a drink and do some reading, writing, resting or chatting. The dinner was exquisite from...

Total professionalism! We stayed 1st and 2nd January in "The Holly" room. From the immediate warm welcome, the whole team are customer focused and all demonstrate an eye for detail. The world class cuisine whether dining in the main restaurant or an adjoining lounge; Shere perfection. The Holly room is a "must see" with its wall to ceiling natural plant decoration by such a talented artist....now ...

Step through the gate and you’re instantly wrapped in a wonderfully old English atmosphere. The gardens are gorgeous—lush, carefully tended, and clearly more than just decoration. You can taste that kitchen-garden freshness on the plate: crisp greens, vibrant herbs, and produce that feels like it was picked just moments before service. The food is simple in the best way—seasonal, honest, and beaut...

went on a guided tour of the gardens, followed by an excellent lunch. Tom, the head gardener was very knowledgeable about the history of the house, the additions and of William Robinson, who developed the wild and natural gardens. A very interesting tour, so much so that we didn't notice the rain. The lunch was amazing. Having chosen the main and desert courses, lots of other things arrived such...
