Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal: A Parisian Gem with Exceptional Service and Prime Location

The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property in Paris, consistently earns high praise from guests for its intimate luxury, exceptional service, and unparalleled location. With an overall sentiment that is overwhelmingly positive, many reviewers describe their stays as "perfect" and "unforgettable."

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The hotel generally receives exceptional ratings, often scoring above 9 out of 10 on various platforms. Guests frequently commend it as a "wonderful" and "exceptional" property, with sentiments ranging from "everything was perfect" to "exceeded our expectations."

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of the Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal:

  • Exceptional Service & Staff: The staff are frequently highlighted for being "fantastic," "helpful," "lovely," and going "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay. The concierge service, in particular, receives special mention for excellent recommendations and bookings.
  • Prime Location: Situated in the heart of the 1st arrondissement, the hotel's location is often described as "amazing," "incredible," and "superb." Its proximity to major landmarks like the Louvre Museum, the Palais Royal Garden, and the Tuileries Gardens is a significant draw.
  • Boutique Charm & Design: Housed in an 18th-century limestone building, the hotel blends 5-star finesse with a relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere. The decor is noted for its designer style, refined elements, and vivid green accents that evoke the nearby royal gardens.
  • Amenities: The presence of a spa (Holidermie Spa) with a hot tub, sauna, hammam, and fitness center is a valued amenity, especially for European hotels. Free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service are also appreciated.

Room Quality

The hotel offers 59 rooms and suites, which are described as bright, comfortable, and refined. Rooms are noted for their soft colors, well-thought-out comfort, and a design that feels like a Parisian pied-à-terre. Key features include:

  • Comfort: Beds are often likened to "sleeping on a cloud," featuring pillowtop mattresses, down comforters, and premium bedding, with a pillow menu available.
  • Design & Amenities: Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, tea/coffee makers, minibars (for a fee), bathrobes, slippers, and designer toiletries. Suites may include Nespresso machines.
  • Views & Balconies: Many rooms and suites offer balconies or terraces, with some providing spectacular views of the Louvre, the Palais Royal, and in higher-up suites, even the Eiffel Tower or Sacré-Cœur.

While generally praised, some travelers note that the room decor, though tasteful, can be simple and might lack a "wow factor" that some expect for the price point.

Dining Experience

The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal features Café 52, a restaurant known for its organic, balanced, and seasonal dishes, with a focus on well-being.

  • Breakfast: A healthy, organic, and gourmet buffet breakfast is available, featuring French, local, and organic products. Options include a traditional American breakfast with a variety of breads, pastries, juices, hot beverages, eggs, and cold cuts, or a detox breakfast with a seasonal juice, healthy bowl, avocado toast, detox muesli, and eggs. Breakfast can also be served in-room or on the terrace overlooking Place de Valois.
  • Other Meals: Café 52 serves throughout the day in an intimate atmosphere, and the hotel also offers a healthy, gourmet champagne brunch every Sunday. A bar provides an intimate setting for healthy cocktails, vegetal lattes, and finger food. While the food is generally considered good, some guests have noted limited options and a bias towards vegan and gluten-free choices, which might differ from typical American preferences.

Service & Staff

The service at Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently report being welcomed with genuine smiles, and the staff, including the reception team, concierge, and restaurant servers, are praised for going "above and beyond." They are described as "exceptional," "fantastic," "helpful," and "very lovely," creating a memorable and caring experience for guests. Many feel treated like VIPs from arrival to departure. The hotel also offers 24-hour front desk service and concierge services.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts one of Paris's most prestigious addresses, nestled on Place de Valois in the 1st arrondissement.

  • Proximity to Attractions: It is exceptionally close to the Palais Royal Garden and the Louvre Museum (just a "hop, skip and a jump" away, or a "two-minute walk"). The Tuileries Gardens and the Seine are also within easy walking distance. La Comédie-Française and Rue Saint Honoré are also nearby.
  • Neighborhood: Despite its central location, the square and surrounding streets are remarkably quiet, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
  • Transport: Public transportation (metro) is conveniently located just 140 meters (a two-minute walk) from the hotel. An airport shuttle service is also available for a fee.

Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star property and a Michelin Key One-Key hotel, the Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal is priced accordingly. While some reviews suggest that the rooms' simplicity might not fully reflect the "pricey nightly rates," many guests still find the overall experience, particularly the service and location, to be worth the cost. The value for money rating is generally good, around 8.3 out of 10.

Typical prices for a night can start from around $509-$533, but the average can be higher, with weekend nights typically more expensive. Prices are subject to change, and November is noted as the most expensive month, while August is the cheapest.

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms or recurring issues have been noted:

  • Room Simplicity: As mentioned, some travelers find the room decor a bit simple, potentially not aligning with the luxury price point.
  • Room Views: While many rooms have excellent views, some standard rooms might have less impressive outlooks.
  • Dining Options: A guest mentioned that the food options were somewhat limited and leaned heavily towards vegan and gluten-free, which might not appeal to all palates.
  • Bathroom Design: One guest expressed a dislike for half-glass shower walls.

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal for our wedding anniversary in December and from the moment we set foot through the front door we were warmly greeted by Noa, who made us feel so welcome. Champagne on arrival and a brief tour of the Hotel. We were then shown to our room and to our surprise, the hotel upgraded us to the Eiffel Tour Suite - wow! The room was beautiful! We s...

Stayed here for the amazing location as my partner and I were out and about walking the city all day. We had some issues with noise disturbance in our first room but Clara moved us to a stunning new room that more than made up for the first 2 nights. Staff was nothing but friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was great (ours was free, so not sure about value) with a beautiful buffet and the option...

The location is great for first time visitors who want to see a lot of famous museums. The room is quite small and we had plumbing issue two nights in a row, not pleasant. The breakfast is ok, not that great for the price you pay. Service is very good and I especially like the 24-hr access to their beautiful hammam and gym.
