Gran Hotel Inglés: A Michelin One-Key Oasis of Art Deco Luxury in Madrid

The Gran Hotel Inglés in Madrid, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Keys property, consistently garners exceptional praise from guests, solidifying its reputation as a premier luxury destination in the Spanish capital. With an overall rating frequently described as "wonderful" to "exceptional," achieving scores around 9.4, it stands out for its blend of historic elegance and contemporary comfort.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel's impeccable service, prime central location, and exquisite Art Deco design. The glamorous lobby bar, with its clubby atmosphere, is a particular favorite, often serving as a central hub for guests and locals alike. The hotel's historic charm, being Madrid's oldest luxury hotel dating back to 1886, is seamlessly integrated with five-star amenities, including a superb Sisley spa.

Room Quality

The rooms at Gran Hotel Inglés are a testament to stylish comfort and sophisticated design. Featuring an elegant Art Deco influence, rooms boast parquet floors and a refined 1920s-inspired color scheme of white, bronze, and silver. Custom textiles, brass accents, and original artworks contribute to the luxurious ambiance. Guests rave about the comfort, noting deep mattresses with memory foam toppers and 500 thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets. A thoughtful pillow menu is also available to ensure a perfect night's sleep. Upgraded rooms often include charming details such as decorative wall panels, tufted headboards, vintage valet stands, and freestanding clawfoot tubs. While some rooms offer small balconies overlooking the lively street, quieter accommodations face the inner courtyard. Modern conveniences like bedside USB ports, digital alarm clocks with cordless power chargers, and L'Occitane toiletries are standard.

Dining Experience

The hotel's main restaurant, LobByto (also known as Casa Lobo), offers "forward-thinking Iberian cuisine" with a menu that thoughtfully blends Spanish and international options. Beyond traditional tapas, the restaurant features luxury delicacies such as Ostra Guillardeau N.5 and Beluga 000 caviar. Breakfast is served at LobByto, though some guests have noted it can be expensive and the breakfast area slightly small. The glamorous lobby bar is a social hub, celebrated for its wide selection of wines, vermouth, beer, and a dedicated gin menu, alongside tasty tapas.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at Gran Hotel Inglés are consistently highlighted as exceptional and a major strength of the hotel. Guests frequently describe the team as "fantastic," "attentive," "kind," and "helpful," contributing to a feeling of being genuinely cared for. Personalized touches, such as a sit-down check-in with a welcome drink of sparkling wine or water, are often appreciated. Concierges like Prince and Stefian have received individual commendations for their outstanding assistance and local recommendations.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an outstanding and central location in Madrid's historic Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter). Tucked away on the narrow, brick-laid Calle de Echegaray, it offers a charming "secret spot" feel while being incredibly accessible to major attractions. Guests can easily walk to iconic sites such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, and El Retiro Park. The "Golden Triangle of Art," encompassing world-renowned museums like the Prado and Reina Sofia, is also within a short stroll. Public transportation is highly convenient, with Sevilla Station just a 4-minute walk and Sol Station 5 minutes away. The surrounding neighborhood is vibrant, filled with numerous bars, restaurants, and shops.

Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key One-Keys property and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Gran Hotel Inglés is positioned as a luxury establishment. While specific price ranges were not provided in the reviews, the overwhelming sentiment suggests that the exceptional experience, luxurious amenities, and outstanding service justify the cost. Some guests have noted that breakfast can be an expensive add-on.

Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms of Gran Hotel Inglés are minimal, reflecting its high standards. The most frequently mentioned points include the cost of breakfast and, for a few, the breakfast nook being a little small. One guest also mentioned feeling rushed during breakfast service. While rooms are generally praised for comfort, a guest did find standard pillows uncomfortable, but this was promptly resolved by utilizing the available pillow menu. The hotel's location on a narrow side street, while adding to its charm, means the entrance can be easy to miss for first-time visitors.

This would be the most honest 5 stars I have ever given. This hotel aside its beautiful ambient, has THE MOST wonderful employees! Never been a guest somewhere feeling so valued, nicely spoken to and served. Every one of them is careful, ultra polite and at service all the time. Nuria, the main concierge - the best ever! I am absolutely recommending this place.

This hotel is incredibly beautiful. The service is unmatched. We arrives after an 8 hour flight very early in the morning. We were exhausted. Staff was ready for us as soon as we walked in. They offered us coffee, snacks, and quickly got our room ready. They also knew who we were for our entire stay, making us feel welcome and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was delicious and dinner at th...

This hotel has history. The lobby is warm and inviting. I rarely enjoy spending time in hotel lobbies; but here it was different. The ambiance, live music, great drink selection and decadent food made all the difference. The service is truly unmatched. The staff make you feel like you are the most important guest. They know your name and preferences. They always greet with a smile. Next time I’m ...

From the moment we arrived, greeted by bellman extraordinaire Prince, we felt completely taken care of. The quality of the rooms, the food, the decor was top level. Every contact we had with each staff member here was pleasant, helpful and friendly. In our farewell chat with Room Director Sara we gleaned that the philosophy of this hotel is hospitality excellence. This Madrid hotel is so superior ...

One of the best stays I’ve ever had! The hotel is full of charm and history, with staff who go above and beyond to make you feel at home. The breakfast was outstanding, with both a buffet and hot menu options. My room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully detailed. Plus, the location is unbeatable—close to everything worth seeing. Can’t wait to come back!

When your 5 year old is writing thank you notes to the staff then you know the service is exceptional. Lives up to all the photos and previous great reviews, with exceptional attention to detail the standout feature. The quality of the extra child's bed alone is the best we've ever seen across many 5 star hotels. Small acts of personalised service and care from all the team went a long to make ou...
