Expert Review: Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas

Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas, a Michelin Key Selected property on Ishigaki Island, Japan, is widely lauded as a luxurious and family-friendly retreat offering a blend of natural beauty, thoughtful design, and excellent hospitality.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas is overwhelmingly positive, with guest ratings frequently ranging from "Excellent" to "Exceptional," often scoring 8.6 to 9.2 out of 10 on various booking platforms. Guests consistently highlight it as an ideal destination for a relaxing getaway and a special holiday, especially for families with children.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several key aspects of the resort:

  • Amenities: The resort boasts extensive facilities, including one of Ishigaki Island's largest pool areas, known as "The Aqua Garden," with indoor and outdoor pools, and a water park. The public bath (onsen) with an outdoor onsen pool is also a significant draw.
  • Beach: The pristine, 1 km long natural Fusaki Beach is a major highlight, perfect for snorkeling, water activities, and enjoying spectacular west-facing sunsets.
  • Service: The staff's exceptional friendliness, helpfulness, and professional demeanor are frequently mentioned.
  • Dining: The breakfast buffet receives high praise for its quality, variety, and extensive selection of both Western and Japanese dishes.
  • Design & Atmosphere: The resort's design seamlessly integrates contemporary comfort with traditional Ryukyu culture, featuring red-tiled roofs and warm, earthy materials. The sprawling property, reminiscent of a small village, is well-maintained and offers a peaceful, green, and calm environment.
  • Convenience: On-site coin laundry machines on each floor are appreciated for their usefulness, particularly for families. Electric shuttles (golf carts) are available to transport guests across the large resort grounds.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas are described as spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped. The resort offers 17 different room types, including garden and ocean view rooms, suites, family rooms, and villas. Rooms feature simple and fresh designs with nautical color accents and locally inspired decor. Many rooms include private balconies or terraces, and some villas even come with private pools, enhancing the sense of privacy. Standard amenities often include a refrigerator, tea/coffee making facilities, blackout curtains, and air conditioning. Some premium rooms may even feature luxurious additions like Refa hair straighteners, Mirable shower heads, and foot massagers. However, some guests have noted that pillows can be old and stiff, and occasionally a musty smell might be present in garden terrace rooms, though easily resolved with a dehumidifier.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Fusaki Beach Resort is generally highly regarded. The breakfast buffet stands out as "outstanding" and "superb," offering a wide selection of both Western and Japanese choices that leave guests very satisfied. The resort features four restaurants and bars, providing diverse dining options from creative Ryukyu and international cuisine to buffet-style all-day dining and beachside BBQs. While dinner is considered good and worth its price, some guests have mentioned limited dining options, particularly if certain restaurants are closed, and that drinks like juice may not be included in the dinner buffet and require separate payment.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas consistently receive high marks for their kindness, helpfulness, and professional approach. Guests report that staff members are readily available and strive to resolve issues on the spot, from accommodating early check-ins to assisting with lost items. While some reviews noted that English proficiency among some staff might be lacking for a large international resort, their willingness to assist and provide excellent hospitality is impeccable. The resort also provides convenient services like electric shuttles to navigate the expansive property and free airport shuttle services.

6. Location & Accessibility

The resort is ideally situated on the western coast of Ishigaki Island, directly fronting Fusaki Beach. This location is praised for its beautiful beachfront and opportunities for relaxation. It's approximately a 15-minute drive from the city center, offering a tranquil escape from urban hustle. While a free shuttle bus service to and from Ishigaki Airport is available for overnight guests, having a rental car is highly recommended for exploring the island and its attractions, as external accessibility from the resort can be somewhat limited. Nearby attractions include Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave (4.12 km) and Banna Park (4.35 km).

7. Value & Pricing

Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas is generally considered to offer good value for money, with some rooms being cheaper than 92% of other accommodations in the city. Average weeknight prices hover around $301, while weekend nights average approximately $207, although prices can fluctuate significantly by season; August tends to be the most expensive month, and December the cheapest. The resort also offers environmentally conscious incentives, such as a voucher for guests who opt to skip room cleaning.

8. Common Complaints

While overall satisfaction is high, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Room Maintenance & Cleaning: Inconsistent room cleaning, with occasional reports of forgotten towels or incomplete bathroom cleaning. There have also been mentions of incorrect room assignments at check-in.
  • Pillows: Some guests found the pillows to be old and uncomfortable.
  • Dining Limitations: Limited dining options if some restaurants are closed, and juice not being included in the dinner buffet. Concerns have also been raised about children coughing over buffet food, posing a sanitary risk.
  • Activities & Rules: Some guests expressed a desire for more indoor activities, especially during bad weather, and found lifeguards to be overly restrictive, potentially reducing the fun factor at the beach.
  • Communication: Occasional difficulties with staff English proficiency for a large resort and slow responses to online inquiries regarding lost items.
  • Parking: Parking within the resort can be difficult in the evenings, sometimes requiring guests to use an external lot and call for a shuttle.
  • Cultural Differences: Some guests, particularly from certain international backgrounds, found that the resort strictly adheres to certain principles and procedures that lacked flexibility. This includes policies regarding tattoos in public bathing areas, which must be fully covered.

Visited October 2025. Stayed for 3 nights only. Love every second there. Our favourite is night walk stargazing at beach area. Have many activities such as children water park and of course did snorkeling training from the beach. Have laundry machine too. Car park a bit walking distance but have free shuttle van.
