Overall Rating & Sentiment

Fowey Hall enjoys a superb overall rating, with guests frequently describing their stays as "amazing," "exceptional," and "wonderful." The general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting a peaceful, calm, and luxurious atmosphere that caters exceptionally well to families. Many express a strong desire to return, feeling rested and pampered after their visit.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Fowey Hall:

  • Family-Friendly Focus: The hotel excels in catering to families, with dedicated facilities like the Ofsted-registered "Four Bears Den" crèche offering complimentary childcare, cinema and games rooms, and extensive outdoor play areas including a zip-wire. Thoughtful touches like bottle-warming, buggy loans, and children's menus are highly appreciated.
  • Stunning Location & Views: Perched above the Fowey Estuary, the hotel boasts enviable, sweeping sea and estuary views from many rooms and public spaces. The five acres of well-kept grounds are also a significant draw.
  • Excellent Facilities: Fowey Hall offers a wealth of amenities including an indoor and a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool, a hydro spa, sauna, steam room, and a full-service spa. There are also lounges, a library, and a bar area.
  • Dog-Friendly: The hotel is genuinely welcoming to dogs, providing amenities like bowls, beds, treats, and even an "a la bark" menu.
  • Design & Vibe: The property, a grand Victorian mansion believed to have inspired Toad Hall, offers a luxurious yet relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. Interiors are stylish, cosy, and practical, blending original features with modern, artfully mismatched decor.

Room Quality

Rooms at Fowey Hall are described as spacious, beautifully decorated, and exceptionally clean. Each room is individually designed, often featuring a cool and calming theme with grey and blue tones accented by pops of yellow and orange. Guests appreciate the comfort of luxury mattresses (such as from The White Company) and the modern, stylish bathrooms with good showers and often roll-top baths. Family suites are particularly well-designed, offering interconnecting bedrooms with playful touches for children. Sea view rooms are highly recommended for the breathtaking vistas. Recent upgrades include Chromecast streaming on large flat-screen TVs.

Dining Experience

The dining experience at Fowey Hall is generally praised, with a strong emphasis on high-quality, seasonal, and locally sourced Cornish produce.

  • Breakfast: Often described as "amazing" and "delicious," breakfast includes a generous buffet and hot options like grilled kippers, eggs Benedict, and pastries.
  • Dinner: The à la carte menu features standout seafood (freshly caught by local fishermen) and locally sourced meats. An adults-only dining room provides a more intimate experience, while a relaxed family dining room caters to all.
  • Children's Dining: The children's menu, known as "Little Toads," is comprehensive and diverse, offering both typical kid favourites and high-quality dishes, including pureed baby food upon request. Food is served with efficiency, and dietary requirements are well-catered for.
  • Minor Criticisms: Some guests have noted that the evening menu can be overpriced for the quality, and occasionally found breakfast items like bacon to be tough or the fruit selection limited compared to other hotels of similar standard. Slow service for ordering eggs at breakfast has also been mentioned.

Service & Staff

The staff at Fowey Hall are consistently highlighted as "exceptionally friendly," "amazing," "helpful," and "professional." They are praised for their calm efficiency, making guests feel relaxed and welcomed. The team is particularly adept at catering to families, with childcare staff being highly regarded. The innovative baby listening service, now utilizing cameras and phones for in-room monitoring, allows parents to enjoy adult time with peace of mind.

Location & Accessibility

Fowey Hall is ideally situated above the picturesque town of Fowey, offering a tranquil setting with easy access to the local area.

  • Neighborhood & Attractions: Fowey town, with its cobbled streets, independent shops, and traditional Cornish bakeries, is a short but steep walk down the hill. Readymoney Cove, the closest beach and popular for wild swimming, is also a few minutes' walk away. Nearby attractions include the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, both about 15 minutes away.
  • Transport: The hotel offers ample on-site parking. The nearest train station is 4 miles away, and Newquay Airport (NQY) is 21 miles distant.

Value & Pricing

While Fowey Hall is considered a luxury hotel, guests generally feel it offers good value for the comprehensive family experience it provides. Classic rooms for two adults can start from around £165 per night, while suites may range from £465 per night or more, including breakfast. The extensive facilities and childcare services contribute significantly to the perceived value, especially for families.

Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues have been mentioned:

  • Food Quality vs. Cost: Some guests have found the evening menu to be overpriced given the quality of the food.
  • Maintenance & Housekeeping (Minor): Isolated instances of slow daily room service or garden debris not being cleared promptly after a storm have been noted. Some outside furniture was observed to be getting damaged during winter.
  • Staffing Issues (Occasional): A few reviews mentioned some staff appearing "miserable" or the hotel being "a little short staffed."
  • Fire Alarm Handling: One guest reported a fire alarm activation not being handled brilliantly, causing disturbance and a lack of clear management.
  • Information upon Arrival: A lack of a hotel tour or comprehensive information about the town and local activities upon arrival has been mentioned, especially for those who might be heavily pregnant and unaware of steep hills.
  • Coffee Quality: One guest reported a flat white tasting burned at breakfast, suggesting a potential issue with the coffee machine.
  • Lack of Shower by Spa: A desire for a shower facility post-sauna/steam room has been expressed.

The Spa is also open to the Hotel guests and so children can use the indoor swimming pool, at listed times. This in no way interfered with my enjoyment, as there is also plenty of "adult only" space, with a very good whirlpool bath, a r...

We stayed here for my birthday treat and we were blown away! We were kindly upgraded to one of the new rooms above the spa, which was incredibly luxurious, with amazing bathroom and an enormous and comfy bed. The staff were all polite, helpful and friendly, and the food we had was delicious. The pool and spa is modern and clean, and the games rooms for kiddults and little ones are a nice touch. We...

The hotel is beautiful with a gorgeous view down to the town. The room was very spacious. It’s a very steep 10 minute walk to town to the shops and restaurants, but well worth it. The staff were friendly. We enjoyed nice cocktails in the evenings at the bar. The restaurant was okay. There was a bin for laundry service but no price information provided. We should have asked but didn’t. When we che...

Spent the morning at the Spa here and what a fantastic treat. I opted for the Morning Spa 10am til 2pm with a treatment abd light lunch. My massage therapist Molly was absolutely fantastic. Molly didn't hold back and managed to make me feel relaxed and lose all my tension in my shoulders. Highly recommend.
