The Fort Road Hotel in Margate, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently garners high praise for its blend of contemporary design, warm hospitality, and prime location. Guests frequently describe it as a standout accommodation in Margate, offering a stylish yet comfortable experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Fort Road Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests considering it "the best possible stay in Margate". It holds an impressive rating, often noted for its modern, clean, and charming ambiance.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel for several key aspects:

  • Design & Art: The hotel is a revitalized 1820s boarding house, now featuring a sophisticated mid-century modern aesthetic with carefully chosen art and sleek furnishings. Co-owned by artist Tom Gidley, the hotel boasts an impressive collection of contemporary art, including works by local artist Tracey Emin. The pleasing textures of the finishes, Kvadrat linen curtains, crown mouldings, and herringbone marble floors are frequently appreciated.
  • Location: Its enviable position directly opposite the Turner Contemporary gallery and with views out to sea is a major draw. It's also just steps away from Margate Harbour Arm and The Bay Beach.
  • Service & Staff: The staff consistently receive accolades for being friendly, attentive, welcoming, and personable, contributing to a "home-like atmosphere". Complimentary welcome cookies are a small but appreciated touch.
  • Amenities: Highlights include a spacious and "unselfconsciously cool" bar, a popular restaurant, and a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views, especially at sunset. Free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk, and daily housekeeping are also provided. The hotel is also pet-friendly.

3. Room Quality

The 14 individually styled rooms are described as exquisite, comfortable, and well-appointed. Key features include:

  • Comfort: Plush bedding, very comfortable beds, and effective air conditioning are frequently mentioned.
  • Design: Rooms feature wood-panelled dressing tables, mid-century modern furniture, built-in wardrobes, and often a bar of inlaid stone and stained wood.
  • Bathrooms: These are a particular highlight, designed with brilliant handmade Mexican tiles, solid wood panelling, and classic hanging bathtub faucets, often including rainfall showers or baths. High-quality Haeckel's toiletries, a local Margate brand, are provided.
  • In-room amenities: Guests appreciate the Hay kettles and coffee pots, refrigerators, work desks, glass bottles of milk and water, and filtered water. Some rooms offer sea views, and there's a spacious top-floor suite with panoramic shoreline views.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant, which opened in 2022, has quickly become a hotspot and receives high praise for its food and drink.

  • Breakfast: A generous continental breakfast with fresh orange juice and coffees is included and highly rated. Additional cooked items are available à la carte. Breakfast is served leisurely, sometimes even until 2 pm, which guests appreciate.
  • Restaurant & Bar: The 35-seat restaurant serves Mediterranean-accented seasonal British fare, with a menu inspired by early 20th-century female food writers and utilizing local ingredients. Dinner classics like sole meuniere and tartiflette are mentioned. The downstairs bar is noted for being spacious and "unselfconsciously cool," offering a well-curated cocktail list, including Negronis. Live music events are also hosted in the basement bar.

  • Transport: The hotel is easily accessible by train from London (1.5-2 hours) and is a short walk from Margate Station. While there is no on-site parking, free parking is available within a five-minute walk, and a nearby pay-and-display car park offers fast charging for electric cars.
  • Accessibility: The hotel offers wheelchair access via a side entrance and a lift to all floors except the roof terrace and lower bar. One Superior Seaview room is fully accessible with bathroom rails, a safety alarm, and a wet room shower.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Service: The hotel does not offer room service.
  • Noise: One guest reported hearing noise from an adjacent room and a lift in room 10.
  • Limited Sea View: Some guests in certain rooms noted a somewhat limited sea view.
  • Breakfast Booking: It is advisable to book breakfast in advance as the restaurant opens to the public for brunch, and tables might be scarce.
  • Absence of some amenities: Some reviews mentioned the absence of air conditioning in some rooms (though others state rooms have air-conditioning), and a pool is not available.
  • Suitability for Families/Groups: The hotel's small size (14 rooms) and central town location might not suit large groups or families seeking a very quiet seaside holiday, especially due to concerns about expensive artworks.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Fort Road Hotel recently. The room was lovely and all of the other areas of the hotel are decorated to a very high standard and with very nice taste. It’s really great place to stay. The continental breakfast was very good too, and included in the price. We will definitely be going back!
