Althoff St James's Hotel & Club, London: A Comprehensive Review

The Althoff St James's Hotel & Club, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently garners praise for its elegant charm, exceptional service, and prime Mayfair location. Guests frequently describe it as a luxurious yet comfortable retreat, often highlighting its ability to provide a tranquil experience amidst the bustling heart of London.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing their stays as "exceptional" and a "little piece of quality and class." The hotel consistently receives high ratings for its location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff performance. While some minor issues are occasionally noted, the overall sentiment is one of satisfaction and a strong desire to return.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of the Althoff St James's:

  • Service & Staff: The helpful, attentive, friendly, and professional nature of the staff, including the front desk, bellmen, and concierge, is frequently mentioned as a standout feature.
  • Location: Its central location in a quiet cul-de-sac in Mayfair is a major draw, offering both peacefulness and excellent accessibility to key attractions.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel is praised for its chic, sophisticated, yet cozy atmosphere, with elegant and tasteful decor throughout its grand period building. Many appreciate its "boutique feel" and "real old London feel."
  • Comfort: The beds are often described as very comfortable and cozy, ensuring a good night's sleep.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features 60 individually furnished rooms and suites, some with private balconies. Rooms are generally described as exceedingly comfortable and stylish, with amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, luxury Hypnos beds, fluffy robes, and toiletries in the bathrooms. Handmade silk wallpaper contributes to the boutique feel. However, a recurring point of feedback is that standard rooms can be smaller than expected, leading some guests to recommend upgrading to a deluxe room or suite for a more spacious experience. Some guests have also noted that room amenities can be basic and have experienced issues like dark rooms below street level or noise disturbances, suggesting careful room selection.

4. Dining Experience

The Althoff St James's Hotel & Club offers a "high-end restaurant" and a "swanky little bar and bistro."

  • Restaurant Francatelli: The on-site restaurant, Francatelli, serves modern British and European dishes, including creative and seasonal specials, for lunch and dinner. Guests can expect excellent food quality.
  • Breakfast: A delicious breakfast is generally appreciated. However, there have been some instances where guests found the breakfast to be not ideal or not good value for money, particularly if it was a continental breakfast when a full one was expected. English breakfast is available, often for a surcharge.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Althoff St James's Hotel & Club is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently praise the staff for being helpful, attentive, friendly, polite, and efficient across all departments, including the front desk, concierge, bar staff, doormen, and cleaning staff. Guests have shared positive experiences of staff accommodating requests like early check-in and promptly addressing issues, such as card payment problems or forgotten items. The staff's commitment to delivering genuine hospitality and making guests feel at home is evident in numerous reviews.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an "excellent" and "fabulous" central location in Mayfair, tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac off St. James's Street. This provides a peaceful environment despite being in the heart of the city. It offers easy access to numerous popular attractions, including Buckingham Palace, St. James's Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, the exclusive shops of Jermyn Street, Burlington Arcade, Bond Street, and the Royal Academy of Arts. London's West End theatres and nightlife are also a short stroll away. The proximity to the tube and superb restaurants further enhances its accessibility.

7. Value & Pricing

The Althoff St James's Hotel & Club is a 5-star luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. While some guests find the rooms, particularly standard ones, to be small for the price, many still consider it a worthwhile experience due to the overall quality, service, and location. Average prices for a weeknight have been around $515, and for a weekend night, approximately $588. Prices can fluctuate, with August being a low season and December being the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-regarded, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Room Size: Standard rooms are occasionally perceived as smaller than expected, leading some to feel they are cramped for the price.
  • Bathroom Size: Some reviews mention small bathrooms.
  • Breakfast Value/Inclusions: A few guests have expressed dissatisfaction with the breakfast, specifically regarding its quality or the fact that continental breakfast was included when a full breakfast was anticipated for the price.
  • Cleanliness/Maintenance: While overall cleanliness is praised, there have been isolated complaints about cleanliness in some areas or issues with maintenance, such as a broken toilet handle.
  • Service Responsiveness: A few instances of slow responsiveness to maintenance requests or needing to ask multiple times for basic amenities like water have been reported.
  • Noise/Darkness: Rooms located below street level were noted by some guests as being dark, and some experienced noise issues.

Comfortable with nice toiletries. The rooms are large enough. The bed not the most comfy I’ve slept in. Shower in bath and quite a leg lift to get in and out of. Nice coffee facilities. Zero view but no matter for me. Staff pleasant. Watch the “tip” on the hotel bill. Never had that before - needless to say that was removed. Was a decent price for the location. All things considered would stay the...

As a professional travel writer, I visit 5-star hotels in London every year to do a write-up and create recommendations for travel clients. I'd booked a 5-night stay at Althoff London St James Hotel and Club for December. I always assess hotels I will be reviewing partly on their communication and professionalism prior to the visit. Sadly, there was none from the staff here. I emailed the concier...

Currently having a wonderful experience! We arrived about 10:30 after very long overnight flight. I had paid for an early check in at 1pm. We checked our bags with the hotel, enjoyed a drink at the bar and then walked around the city. At 1 PM I received a phone call saying our room ready. The staff was very attentive and helpful in making sure this request was fulfilled on time. The accommodations...

I was overwhelmed by the service and friendliness of the staff. This was in stark contrast to my Paris experience that actually cost more. The rooms were great. I do agree that the little glass they have to turn the tub into a shower is a bit inadequate. I felt like royalty there.

We had really high expectations staying here as it’s part of the LHW group. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend it at all. The rooms are very very small and not comfortable (for the price I expected definitely much more). The breakfast is terrible. The buffet for continental breakfast is tiny. Don’t bother ordering eggs or omelette they are mediocre. Only good points: - The staff is nice mainly in...
