Expert Review: Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a luxurious and intimate high-desert retreat in the Sangre de Cristo foothills of New Mexico. The resort, set on 57 unspoiled acres just 10 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, is frequently praised for its stunning natural beauty, exceptional service, and sophisticated Southwest design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as an "Excellent Resort Hotel" and "Top 1% in city." It receives "100% Recommended" ratings from verified guests on platforms like Virtuoso. Guests often highlight its "awesome vibe" and report a serene and luxurious experience. However, some isolated but serious complaints regarding security and service responsiveness have been noted.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of the resort:

  • Secluded Location & Views: The resort's setting in the Sangre de Cristo foothills provides breathtaking views and a sense of tranquility, while still being conveniently close to Santa Fe's vibrant arts and culture scene. The scent of piñon pine, wild lavender, and sage is a frequently mentioned sensory highlight.
  • Intimate Scale: With only 65 casita guest rooms and suites, the resort offers a personalized and intimate experience, a unique characteristic within the Four Seasons portfolio.
  • Exceptional Spa: The Spa at Rancho Encantado is highly regarded, even rated one of the world's best by Tatler magazine. It features unique kiva-inspired rooms and offers regionally inspired treatments. Guests can also reserve private spa courtyards with hot tubs, outdoor showers, and saunas.
  • Outdoor Activities: The resort's Adventure Center facilitates a variety of activities, including guided hikes on the on-property Camino Encantado trail, biking, horseback riding, and cultural tours.
  • Thoughtful Amenities: Indoor wood-burning fireplaces and private patios or terraces in every room are frequently highlighted as major attractions, allowing guests to enjoy the scenery year-round. A "fire concierge" service is a unique touch.

3. Room Quality

The 65 casita guest rooms and suites were revitalized in Spring 2024, updating their design while honoring the traditional Southwest aesthetic. Rooms are spacious, starting at a generous 630 square feet, and are characterized by a chic, contemporary Southwest flair. They feature minimalist, pueblo-inspired designs with a color palette of copper, coral, and rust, complemented by locally sourced artwork and artisanal touches.

Key room features include:

  • Indoor Fireplace: A highlight for many guests, enhancing the cozy and romantic atmosphere.
  • Private Patio or Terrace: Each room includes a private outdoor space for enjoying the "stunning views" and fresh air.
  • Luxurious Comforts: Heated floors, deep-soaking tubs, and sumptuous Four Seasons linens and pillows contribute to a highly comfortable stay.
  • Practical Amenities: His and her closets, mini-bars, and in-room safes are standard.

4. Dining Experience

The resort's signature restaurant, Terra, offers a fine dining experience with American cuisine infused with the "flavors of northern New Mexico." The menus are well-curated, and daily dinner specials provide variety for guests staying multiple nights. Many ingredients are sourced from the onsite Chef's Garden.

  • Breakfast: Often receives a special nod, with guests noting it as particularly good.
  • Casual Fare: The Bar offers a more casual menu, with items like the green chile queso, Terra Signature Burger (with green chile and candied chile bacon), and beef brisket tacos receiving high praise; some consider the queso the "best thing" they ate in Santa Fe.
  • Ambiance: Patio dining at Terra allows families with children to enjoy meals while kids can explore the adjacent garden. Sunset views from Terra are also highly recommended.
  • Family-Friendly: Kids aged 5 and under eat free at Terra.

5. Service & Staff

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado is known for its "fantastic service" and "friendliest Service. Top 5% in city." Guests consistently describe the staff as attentive, personalized, warm, efficient, thoughtful, and delightfully pleasant. The "fire concierge" service, where staff assist with indoor and outdoor fireplaces, is a frequently mentioned thoughtful touch. The 24-hour in-room dining and concierge services also contribute to a seamless guest experience.

However, there have been some criticisms, including reports of occasionally slow service at the bar and a significant complaint about serious security issues and unresponsive management, which led some guests to cut their stay short.

6. Location & Accessibility

The resort boasts an "unbeatable" location, nestled in 57 acres of the Sangre de Cristo foothills. This offers a tranquil, secluded environment ideal for relaxation. Despite its peaceful setting, it is remarkably accessible, located just 10 minutes from downtown Santa Fe's renowned galleries, shops, and unique architecture. The resort provides a complimentary shuttle service to downtown Santa Fe, making exploration convenient. It's also a 10-minute drive to The Santa Fe Opera House. For outdoor enthusiasts, the property offers direct access to hiking trails, including the Camino Encantado Trail. The nearest airport is Albuquerque (ABQ).

7. Value & Pricing

As a Four Seasons property and a Michelin Key selection, the resort operates at a luxury price point. While guests acknowledge that "normal rates here are a bit eye-watering," particularly for entry-level rooms, many consider the experience to be worth the cost for a special occasion or indulgent getaway. The Encantado Suite, with its private patio, hammock, fireplace, and sunset views, is specifically highlighted as a "priceless" splurge for families.

8. Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, some guests have voiced specific concerns:

  • Security & Management Issues: A serious complaint detailed alleged security issues, including male staff entering women's bathrooms when women were alone, and subsequent unresponsiveness from management.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Some guests experienced slow service at The Bar and felt that overall service did not meet typical Four Seasons standards, especially concerning room requests or recognition for repeat Four Seasons guests.
  • Spa Booking Difficulty: The spa can be fully booked, making advance reservations highly recommended to ensure availability.
  • Limited Family Activities (On-Property): For families, on-property activities might be somewhat limited, though this is offset by off-property excursions and the complimentary shuttle to downtown Santa Fe.
  • Pool Size: The outdoor pool area is noted as being a "little on the small side."
  • Room Layout Preference: The "up-and-down condo-style setup of many of the rooms" might not appeal to all guests.
  • Spa Ambiance: One reviewer found the spa experience less than ideal due to separate buildings requiring outdoor transit in winter and a massage room that was fully lit by the sun.

I didn't stay here just came for brunch. It wasn't bad at all but I was hoping for more options. It was the weekend though and Valentine's Day. The manager was very helpful and we had a great conversation! The server and wait staff were great too! Very on top of things and helpful with ordering

The most luxurious, other worldly resort out there. We stayed for a mini honey moon and enjoyed every single second. Highlights included dining at Terra on Christmas eve, building our own fires in our room and on our private patio, indulging in a couples massage at the spa, and jogging the Camino Encantado. The staff and service were impeccable, they paid attention to our every need and went above...

Love the scenery until we got a room for three people not being told there was two full-size beds. Also part of the scenery included blood on our pillow. Service has been great since we got here. Very accommodating, but this pillow and accommodating my face 🤣. The guy at the front desk, even asked if we wanted water when we were in the valet line. He should’ve asked if we needed a new pillowcase...

My husband and I just stayed at Four Seasons Rancho Encantado for three nights, and everything about this property was exceptional. Other than the view, our dinner had abysmal service, fish was undercooked and ribeye steak was cold. The wait staff needs proper training. I used to enjoy dining here but just eat at the bar and save your money. You’ll be disappointed that they don’t know how to be a high end restaurant even though it is “Four Seasons” it’s slow in these parts and can be annoying.
