Expert Review: Foundry Hotel Asheville
Foundry Hotel Asheville: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property
The Foundry Hotel Asheville, a Curio Collection by Hilton property, stands out as a charming and distinctive hotel rooted in the city's rich industrial past, earning its place as a Michelin Key Selected establishment. Guests frequently praise its unique blend of historical architecture with modern comforts, offering an upscale experience in the heart of Asheville.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Foundry Hotel Asheville is overwhelmingly positive, with an impressive overall rating of 9.4 according to some reviews. Guests consistently describe it as a beautiful, clean, and aesthetically pleasing property with a "cool vibe." While celebrated for its character and design, some experiences with service can be inconsistent.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly drawn to several aspects of The Foundry Hotel:
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel, once a steel mill, masterfully blends its industrial heritage with modern, chic finishes. Exposed brick walls and historical decor, including framed newspaper clippings and antique cashier tills, contribute to its unique personality. The property comprises five connected buildings, offering a fun and exploratory experience for guests.
- Location: Its prime location in downtown Asheville, within the historically Black neighborhood known as "The Block," is a major draw. It offers easy walking access to most areas of the city, including restaurants, shopping, bars, art galleries, and attractions like Wicked Weed Brewing Pub, Pack's Tavern, and the Asheville Art Museum.
- Amenities: The hotel offers a 24-hour fitness center with cardio equipment, including Peloton bikes and treadmills, as well as free weights. Complimentary bottled water is a noted perk. The hotel also provides a Tesla for guest transportation anywhere downtown on-demand.
- Atmosphere: The common areas, particularly the Workshop Lounge, are highlighted for their inviting atmosphere, complete with fireplaces, televisions, games, a piano, and live music on some nights.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at The Foundry Hotel are described as spacious, quiet, and comfortable, blending historical elements with modern design.
- Design & Comfort: Many rooms feature exposed brick walls, real hardwood floors, and tasteful decorations that acknowledge the hotel's history. Beds are consistently praised for being genuinely comfortable.
- Features: Rooms include large wet bars, refrigerators with complimentary bottled water, and Nespresso machines. Bathrooms are brightly lit with marble tiles, single sinks, backlit vanities, and walk-in showers stocked with Acca Kappa products. Fast Wi-Fi and quiet HVAC systems are also noted.
- Minor Criticisms: Some guests have found the lighting in rooms to be a bit dim at night, which, while matching the mood, could make desk work challenging. The large size of some rooms can make the TV appear small from the bed. A recurring complaint is the absence of bathtubs in any of the rooms, and some find certain room and public area furniture to be generic.
4. Dining Experience
The Foundry Hotel offers two main dining and drinking options:
- Benne on Eagle: This on-site restaurant serves "Appalachian soul food" and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with brunch available on Sundays. Breakfast dishes are considered reasonably priced, with options like biscuit, sausage gravy, and eggs over medium being well-received. Coffee from local PennyCup is freely flowing. However, some reviewers felt that the brunch dishes could be overpriced and occasionally failed to deliver on bold flavors.
- Workshop Lounge: Located adjacent to the front desk, this large and striking space serves drinks and small plates, often featuring live music. It's a popular spot for local draft beers, wine, and cocktails.
5. Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service is generally positive, highlighting friendly and diligent staff, but there are some inconsistencies reported.
- Positive Experiences: Many guests commend the staff as "excellent," "helpful," and "incredible," appreciating their attentiveness and willingness to assist with a smile. Friendly staff members offer helpful advice and welcome guests with sparkling wine and complimentary water. Housekeeping is noted for being thorough and timely.
- Areas for Improvement: Some guests have experienced what they describe as "mediocre service" and a "thin staff," particularly concerning valet and front desk operations where not all employees seemed fully competent or on the same page regarding policies (e.g., external food delivery). Room service has been reported as unavailable or unresponsive at times.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Foundry Hotel's location is consistently lauded as one of its strongest assets.
- Neighborhood: It's situated in "The Block," a historically significant neighborhood on the south side of downtown Asheville, known for its cultural heritage and recent revitalization.
- Proximity to Attractions: The hotel is just a few blocks or a five-minute walk from the city center, providing easy access to a plethora of attractions including museums (like the Moog synthesizer museum and Asheville Art Museum), art galleries, diverse dining options, coffee shops, and breweries.
- Transport: While its central location makes walking convenient, the hotel also offers a Tesla for on-demand guest transport within downtown. It's also a short drive from I-240.
- Accessibility: The hotel is committed to accessibility, with features such as accessible public entrances, guest rooms with mobility features, accessible restaurants and exercise facilities, and visual alarms for the hearing impaired.
7. Value & Pricing
Pricing at The Foundry Hotel Asheville reflects its upscale nature and prime location.
- Price Range: Room rates generally start in the mid-$300s, but can reach $500-$600 or more during peak seasons, such as fall foliage, with total costs potentially exceeding $1,300 for a two-night stay with taxes.
- Value Perception: While many appreciate the luxurious accommodations and amenities, some feel that the high nightly rates are difficult to reconcile with perceived limitations in service and amenities (like the lack of room service). Redeeming Hilton Honors points or purchasing points during sales can offer better value. Hilton Honors Gold elite members typically receive a $15 per person daily food and beverage credit.
8. Common Complaints
While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms include:
- Inconsistent Service: A frequently mentioned complaint relates to the inconsistency and perceived thinness of staff, particularly in valet services (where some drivers couldn't operate manual transmissions) and at the front desk.
- Lack of Room Service/Bathtubs: The absence of a fully functional room service and bathtubs in any of the rooms are notable drawbacks for some guests, especially given the hotel's price point.
- Dining Quality: While breakfast at Benne on Eagle is generally well-regarded, some found the brunch dishes to be overpriced and not always delivering on flavor.
- Generic Furniture: A minor criticism is that some room and public area furniture can feel generic despite the overall unique design.
- Dim Lighting: The dim lighting in rooms at night can be a functional issue for some guests.

Stayed at this location several nights during vacation in Asheville NC during the holidays. Very nice rooms, very attentive staff and the bartenders were amazing and made fantastic drinks. Only thing that could make it better is if there were a nearby parking lot so you didn't have to deal with valets. Although they were good too, i rather self park than have to request and wait for my car.

The room is very comfortable and the staff are very nice. The location is good but check-in is not great. We could not enter the check-in area due to the narrow entrance and the number of vehicle being worked by the valet team. The app and website advertises dining options. The restaurant is only used for breakfast and brunch (weekends). The dinner menu is a few light bites and over priced bar foo...

Potential for Greatness The Foundry has so much going for it and is a terrific choice when staying in Asheville. Overall, a pretty average experience. The staff were friendly, the valet was friendly as well though on our second night, myself and three other people were waiting for a significant amount of time before we found a person not assigned to valet to help use, for a Saturday night, it may be worth staffing up... The room and bathroom appeared clean, though I did not realize it was a dog-friendly hote...

We didn't actually get to stay at Foundry Hotel this time, as they were closed for maintenance. While there was a miscommunication regarding our booking through a third-party site, the way the hotel handled the situation was truly first-class. The staff was incredibly apologetic and took immediate action to ensure we were taken care of. They relocated us to a fantastic hotel nearby and even comped...
