Expert Review: The Lygon Arms
The Lygon Arms in Broadway, United Kingdom, a Michelin Key Selected property, is frequently praised for its blend of rich history, charming ambiance, and modern luxuries. Guests generally regard it as an excellent choice for a Cotswolds country getaway, offering a truly memorable experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Lygon Arms is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "beautiful," "historic," "charming," and providing "excellent" service and facilities. It holds high ratings for location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff performance. Many reviewers highly recommend the hotel and express a desire to return.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several key aspects of The Lygon Arms:
- Historical Charm & Design: The hotel's 14th-century origins and beautifully maintained historic building, with period features like stone fireplaces, beamed ceilings, and locally sourced antiques, are a major draw. The lobby and bar areas offer cozy nooks and intimate spaces.
- Luxurious Spa Facilities: The spa is a significant highlight, featuring a heated indoor pool with a retractable glass roof, a Jacuzzi, saunas, a eucalyptus-scented steam room, a gym, and various treatment rooms for facials and massages.
- Prime Location: Situated on the High Street in the picturesque village of Broadway, it's an ideal base for exploring the Cotswolds' shops, cafes, and attractions.
- Exceptional Service: The staff's friendliness, helpfulness, and often impeccable service are frequently commended.
- Pet-Friendly Atmosphere: The hotel is well-regarded for being welcoming to dogs, providing amenities like beds, bowls, treats, and even outdoor dog showers.
3. Room Quality
The Lygon Arms offers 86 rooms, including suites, with a mix of traditional and contemporary decor. Many rooms boast period features such as wooden beams, slanting floors, stone fireplaces, and antique furniture, creating a "luxuriously old" feel. Rooms are described as comfortable, spacious, and well-appointed, with amenities like flat-screen TVs, Noble Isle bath products, bathrobes, slippers, and coffee/tea making facilities. Some suites and larger rooms also include sofa beds, catering to families. While most rooms are well-maintained, some older rooms might show signs of wear, such as worn furnishings or frayed carpets, and some may lack air-conditioning, though fans are available. Annex rooms are noted to be larger than some in the main building.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at The Lygon Arms is a significant draw, particularly the Grill by James Martin, which is set in a grand 16th-century hall with a vaulted ceiling. The restaurant serves elevated British cuisine with a focus on seasonal, local ingredients. Guests praise the food quality, describing dishes as "expertly prepared" and "beautifully cooked." Specific highlights include modern British fare, excellent steaks, and flavorful vegan options.
Breakfast is also served in The Grill and is generally well-received, offering a buffet of fruits, yogurts, pastries, cold cuts, and cheeses, alongside a menu of cooked-to-order dishes like Eggs Florentine.
For more informal dining and drinks, The Tavern offers a traditional country pub atmosphere with light bites and cocktails. Alfresco courtyard dining is available in warmer months. While the Grill often receives high praise for its food, some guests have noted it can be "ridiculously overpriced."
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at The Lygon Arms are consistently described as "exceptional," "friendly," "helpful," and "attentive." Many reviewers highlight the warm hospitality, with staff going "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant stay. Valet parking upon arrival is a appreciated touch, as is the helpfulness of staff in providing information about the hotel and local area. However, some isolated feedback points to inconsistencies, such as inattentive bar staff or communication issues regarding table reservations.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Lygon Arms boasts an "excellent" and "fabulous" location right in the heart of Broadway village, often referred to as the "Jewel of The Cotswolds." Guests can easily stroll out the front door to explore the village's boutiques, independent cafes, and pubs. Nearby attractions include the Priory Gallery, Broadway Museum and Art Gallery, the Gordon Russell Design Museum, and Broadway Tower (a four-mile walk away). Further afield, the Cotswold Farm Park, Cotswold Wildlife Park, and Sudeley Castle are accessible by car.
For transport, Evesham Station is a 20-minute drive away, with regular trains from Birmingham and London. A car is recommended for exploring the wider Cotswolds, and the hotel offers plenty of free parking and electric vehicle chargers.
7. Value & Pricing
The Lygon Arms is a luxury hotel, and its pricing reflects this, with average nightly rates around $341, though deals can start from $199. Prices tend to be highest on Saturdays and Fridays, with Mondays, Sundays, or Wednesdays often offering better value. While some guests find the food in the Grill "overpriced", many still consider the overall experience to be worth the cost due to the quality of the facilities, service, and historic ambiance. Weddings at the hotel start from around £2,000, including accommodation, food, and drink, based on a weekday in January.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted by guests:
- Dated Bathrooms: Some reviews mention that certain bathrooms could benefit from upgrades or refurbishment.
- Service Inconsistencies (Bar/Breakfast): A few guests have reported issues with inattentive staff in the bar area or delays and missing items during lunch. Breakfast, while generally good, has received comments about unsalted butter and hard black pudding.
- Room-Specific Issues: Some older rooms in the main house may have "old hotel" issues like creaky floorboards, cold drafts, or traffic noise if close to the road. There was a report of a noisy warm air pumped system in an annex room requiring a room change. A very specific complaint mentioned black mold in spa showers which allegedly caused illness.
- Communication Problems: A couple of instances highlight communication errors between staff teams, leading to issues with table availability.

My husband and I got married at the Lygon Arms last weekend and it was nothing short of phenomenal. Melissa was absolutely fantastic from the beginning of the planning process right up until the moment we left. We were originally going to decorate the champagne bar the night before but due to a last minute booking for that night we were unable to access it. Melissa did all the decoration herself o...

Gorgeous 14th century coaching house. We didn't stay this time hence no stars for room. Large building with many nooks and crannies. Lovely atmosphere and very welcoming. We had dinner here in the evening and a coffee at lunchtime. Food was lovely but not very hot. We ate in the champagne bar which was less noisy, so happy about that. Service was great. We would definitely come back and highly r...

Wonderful stay at this great little spot in Broadway. Came with my mom because she had to take in all the history, and we both loved it. Rooms are super cute and come with great amenities - lotion was super nice. Beds were very comfy and the rooms were quiet and warm. Breakfast in the morning was super filling. Great service. Highly recommend!

5 star prices but a 3 star experience. You cannot argue with the history of the place, and it’s a fabulous location, but the experience is let down by mediocre food, and comedic service. It took 4 attempts to order coffee at breakfast. The food came out cold. We were seated at a table next to an open roaring fire for breakfast and dinner ok if you like eating in 30 degree heat. Glasses we were ser...

I visited The Lygon Arms in Broadway for a birthday drink and was genuinely shocked by the pricing. £63 for two drinks and a bottle of water is indefensible. £25 for a large glass of red wine is not “premium” — it’s excessive. There was nothing about the service, presentation, or overall experience that justified those figures. Yes, the building is attractive and the setting charming, but pricin...
