Expert Review: Daios Cove

Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas, a Michelin Key Selected property nestled on the captivating island of Crete, Greece, consistently garners attention for its stunning natural setting, sophisticated design, and comprehensive amenities. While lauded for its beauty and many luxurious offerings, guest experiences highlight both exceptional strengths and areas for improvement.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Daios Cove is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as "beautiful," "luxurious," and "amazing." It's often recommended for families and those seeking a relaxing retreat in a picturesque setting. The resort's selection by the Michelin Key further reinforces its reputation for high quality and a memorable stay. However, some recent reviews indicate that while the facilities are top-tier, the execution of service sometimes falls short of true 5-star luxury, leading to a mixed sentiment regarding the overall value for money for some.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently praise several aspects of Daios Cove:

  • Location & Views: The resort's dramatic setting within a private bay offers breathtaking sea views from nearly every vantage point. The architecture, utilizing local stone, blends seamlessly into the hillside.
  • Design & Ambiance: Daios Cove is characterized by its elegant, contemporary design with sophisticated elements, high-quality materials like marble, and original art. It's often described as resembling a luxurious village.
  • Amenities: The resort boasts an impressive array of facilities, including a magnificent infinity pool, a private beach with calm, shallow waters, and an award-winning spa with extensive offerings. A well-equipped gym, tennis courts, and a wide range of watersports are also available.
  • Family-Friendly Focus: Daios Cove is notably family-friendly, offering a comprehensive kids' club (from four months to 12 years), a crèche with UK-trained staff, children's menus, and dedicated activities.
  • Food Quality: The quality of food, particularly in the à la carte restaurants, is a recurring highlight.

3. Room Quality

The rooms, suites, and villas at Daios Cove are generally described as spacious, well-designed, and comfortable. Many accommodations feature private pools or plunge pools and stunning sea views.

  • Design and Comfort: Rooms incorporate tactile materials such as cool marble, crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, and raw stone, alongside contemporary furniture. King-sized beds with memory-foam pillows and luxurious Egyptian linen bedding are common.
  • Amenities: Standard in-room technology includes LCD media hubs with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and coffee/tea facilities. Bathrooms are often highlighted as attractive with beige marble tile, large glassed-in rainfall showers, and separate soaking tubs.
  • Private Pools: A significant number of units offer private saltwater pools, though guests should be aware that heating these pools typically incurs an extra charge and requires advance notice.
  • Areas for Improvement: Some older reviews mention rooms feeling "a bit dated", although newer suites are praised for being "brand new" and having "very high specs and comfort".

4. Dining Experience

The dining at Daios Cove is a strong point, offering diverse options and generally high-quality cuisine.

  • Variety: The resort features several restaurants, including Pangea (buffet), Taverna (Greek à la carte, fresh seafood), and Ocean Restaurant (fine dining).
  • Ocean Restaurant: This fine-dining venue offers Michelin-quality cuisine, with menus crafted by talents such as Heston Blumenthal's prodigy Dimos Balopoulos or drawing inspiration from Ducasse Conseil.
  • Taverna: Praised for its authentic Greek dishes, fresh seafood, and a lovely sea-breeze ambiance.
  • Pangea: The buffet restaurant offers excellent breakfast choices and themed dinner nights, with many praising the quality of food. However, some guests have noted the buffet dinner might not always meet a 5-star standard, and food from hotplates can sometimes be lukewarm.
  • All-Inclusive Option: An "all-inclusive" concept, described as "premier or deluxe," is available and often recommended by guests to manage the cost of drinks and à la carte dining, which can be expensive.
  • Breakfast: Breakfast, particularly at Ocean Restaurant and Pangea, receives high marks for its variety and quality, including items like frothy lattes and creamy Greek yogurt.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is somewhat mixed but generally leans positive. Many guests highlight the friendly, helpful, and professional nature of the staff.

  • Positive Feedback: Restaurant and spa staff often receive particular praise for their attentiveness and excellent service. Guests appreciate the staff's efforts to make them feel special, especially for families with children.
  • Areas for Criticism: Some guests have reported instances of slow or inattentive service, undertrained staff, and long waiting times for luggage or basic room requests. There have also been mentions of sunbeds by the main pool appearing to be "managed" for guests who tip.

6. Location & Accessibility

Daios Cove is situated in a spectacular private bay in Vathi, near Agios Nikolaos, on Crete's east coast.

  • Secluded Setting: The resort's private and isolated location is a significant draw, offering tranquility and stunning natural beauty.
  • Accessibility within the Resort: The property is built into a steep hillside, utilizing funiculars and golf cart services to transport guests around. However, some reviews mention that the property can be challenging for guests with mobility issues or strollers due to numerous stairs, and there have been complaints about faulty funiculars or inadequate shuttle service.
  • External Accessibility: Due to its remote nature, a car is often considered necessary for guests wishing to explore the surrounding area or nearby towns like Agios Nikolaos.

7. Value & Pricing

Daios Cove is positioned as a luxury resort, and its pricing reflects this.

  • Expensive: The resort is generally considered expensive, especially for food and drinks if guests are not on an all-inclusive plan. An €8 beer and a €25 sandwich have been cited as examples of high on-site prices.
  • All-Inclusive Recommendation: Many guests strongly advise opting for the all-inclusive package to mitigate costs, especially as it can include premium drinks and a generous allowance for à la carte restaurants.
  • Additional Costs: There can be additional charges for services such as heating private pools and using spa facilities like steam rooms and saunas.
  • Seasonal Pricing: Prices fluctuate significantly, with August being the most expensive month and April being the cheapest.

8. Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, recurring criticisms include:

  • Service Inconsistencies: Reports of slow, inattentive, or undertrained staff, and issues with timely fulfillment of requests.
  • Crowding: The main pool and private beach can become crowded, making it difficult to find available sunbeds. The beach itself is noted as beautiful but sometimes lacks sandy open spaces for strolling.
  • Cold Private Pools: Private pools are often reported as being "ice-cold" if guests do not pay an extra fee for heating.
  • High Costs for Extras: Food, drinks, and some spa services can be very expensive if not part of an all-inclusive package.
  • Accessibility Challenges: The hilly terrain and reliance on funiculars can pose difficulties for guests with mobility issues, strollers, or those experiencing funicular malfunctions.
  • Remote Location: The resort's isolation means a car is essential for exploring outside the property.
  • Family Dominance: While excellent for families, some reviews suggest it might not be the best choice for couples seeking a quiet, romantic getaway, especially during peak season due to the presence of many children.

Very pretentious place for nothing. The rooms are very old and don’t match the pictures at all. The food quality is nowhere near 5-star standards and most products are frozen food. You can’t get a seat on the pool or the beach unless you fight with towels at 7am, like in a 3-star hotel. Avoid this place if you want to enjoy your vacations.

Cozy and quite hotel… Very tasty food… Sun near pool hiding 16:45. Good and high quality shampagne and another, but they dont have sambuca. Not comfortable stairs, funiculiere slow… Nice sand in the beach. Service good… nice staff… If you drink alcohol i recomend book all inclusive. Then you can take every day 2 bottles of alcohol to the room, and not limited soft drinks.

A fantastic resort! We thought we were in the White Lotus! They really went out of their way to make my wife and I special for our honeymoon. The golf carts are great. Everyone is in a good mood and greets you with a smile. This is a very family friendly resort, something that we didn’t know or realize the magnitude of. If you visit don’t be surprised by the children - you have been warned. That b...

For small children the hotel offers a lot, from the Baby Club to special meals and much more. A very special thank you goes to the Guest Relations team – Lamprini and Mara – as well as to Jiannis from the Ocean Restaurant, who was also outstanding! A little tip: w...
